Plumstead_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 To be fair when Nigel Pearson was romping this league with Leicester it was "my gran could win League 1 given money". Excellent point worth repeating.
CB Fry Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 why would our start be any different...? boothroyd did not have a slow start Wilson did not have a slow start lambert did not have a slow start But Pre-season is the most precious commodity in the whole of football. Or basically, find something Saints didn't have and flog it to death. Anything to make out how hard done by we are more than any other club. If only Pardew had had the pre season that Boothroyd and Paul Lambert had. Or the millions and millions to spend that Swindon and Millwall have. Or the gigantic fanbase that MK Dons have. Next season we'll have our pre-season, but there will be something else for the whiners to latch on to. Whatever happens to us and whatever we get to some Southampton FC are always the most hard-done-by club in British Football and we don't ever stand a chance of acheiving anything because we battle impossible odds and everyone else has it easy.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Looking forward to the Stockport game anyone:D

ALWAYS_SFC Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Why don't you just come out and say that you don't think Pardew is doing a good job, rather than tip toeing around it. good question. Nobody is good enough unless we beat everyone because we have spent a lot

I think he is a good manager... however, it is possible to be peed off with current form/results without wanting a manager to be sacked....I know some dont want to read that but it is true..
NickG Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 (edited) Form over October / November / December / January (period chosen as after team got settled, signings came in, Pardew had backroom staff - and deliberately as when form improved) Played 17 Won 10 Drawn 4 Lost 3 points 34 Exactly 2 points per game. If we had Pardew and Markus in place earlier I think it is very reasonable to suggest that form shown over the last 4 months would have started at the beginning of the season. League Table would be Norwich played 28 60 points Leeds played 26 57 points Charlton played 27 54 points Saints played 26 52 points Edited 26 January, 2010 by NickG
Thedelldays Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 nick..deal with the facts and that is..we would be 9th...as you stated to alpine..FACTS
CB Fry Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 that is what you want me to say...when many were underwhelmed by his appointment I always thought it was great.. I think he is a good manager... however, it is possible to be peed off with current form/results without wanting a manager to be sacked....I know some dont want to read that but it is true.. Quite. Grumbling about current form is allowed and doesn't need to be sledghammered with the usual "how dare you demand the head of the manager what-about-Lawrie-Mac-and-Ferguson-and-blah-blah-kids-these-days-blah-blah". We don't want to sack the manager. Get over it.
jam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 You don't get it do you? When will the penny drop? You can't buy results. Simples. You can if the manager does his job properly. Simples.
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Need to stop hiding behind excuses and face up to the fact, that forever reason, we are not playing very well at the moment......
CB Fry Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Can't argue with that, the loser mentality seems to be difficult to get rid of. It is staggering that some decide Leeds on minus fifteen in the middle of their gigantic Ken Bates s h it-storm had more things in their favour than we did. On minus ten (five points less). And owned by a gazillionaire.

CanadaSaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Need to stop hiding behind excuses and face up to the fact, that forever reason, we are not playing very well at the moment...... Which is what two people whose opinions I value and who go to the games have been saying. We are very, very close to the point at which it's too late to start playing better.

saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 If we had Ken Bates at the helm and Mahwhinney had taken another 5pts we would have walked this league FFS
St Marco Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Need to stop hiding behind excuses and face up to the fact, that forever reason, we are not playing very well at the moment...... I agree with that. I think there are a few reasons but the main one has to be Hammond being taken out has unsettled the team. Now in todays game when James was taken out we lost our way. Morgan and Wotten are not a good midfield partnership. Hammond will get forward and contribute to assists, goals as well as doing the defensive work. James is one of our top assisters. I don't think it is a tactical problem as some try to suggest, or a manager problem as others try to imply. It is just a case of some players not being good enough i.e Wotten and Morgan. Morgan is a good player, has the potential to be great. But is so inconsistent and has offered very little in terms of assists. If we could get in someone who can do the job of starting stuff from midfield then we will be a lot better. Defence is fine, attack is fine, keeper is fine, wings are fine, centre midfield is not so good

Not bad. fact shortly before the season started we were nearly out of business had no manager. fact - we didn't have any decent forwards who wanted to play for us. fact - Pardew sorted the team out and for the last 4 months we have averaged 2 points a game. fact - we could still play a lot better fact -we all want the play offs.
Thedelldays Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 I really honestly think so many fans are scared of being more then 'run of the mill' for so long we just survived..we had a blip of being better then we got relegation and JUST got into the playoffs then relegated.. it seems so many just dont want to demand more... CanadaSaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Not sure if it is just the stark contrast to last years 'pretties' but we seem to be a long ball team these days It's difficult to tell from the highlights I see, but a screaming absence all year long has been the "Bally type" who controls the midfield psychologically, if that makes sense. He demands that we play a certain way and he lets people have it if they stray from the plan. We don't have anyone like that, and we haven't for some time, so the hoof is never far away.

maysie Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 I think we need some perspective. There are some miserable ****s on this forum and that is the reason I hardly ever post. I'm disappointed at the result and that we keep on gicing leads away and I think Pardew makes some odd decision (I actually can't remember a manager who doesn't). I'd love to see us storm the league this season, but I think I'm well adjusted enough to realise that this is a rebuilding season. If it is this time next year and we still have the same problems, fair enough, lets have a proper moan, but until then how about getting behind the team and getting a grip on reality.
CanadaSaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 agree, thought Hammond was going to be that player on first few views but been disappointed since I expected him to be that player, too, Nick - all the more so for the fact that, by all accounts, he filled that role at Colchester and even wore the C. It's so often the case with players like this that "As go they, so goes the team". They are the team's barometer. Which means that we won't start playing better until he does start playing better, or until we replace him with another midfield leader ('cos the kids aren't ready for the role yet). The positive for me is that we're one player's form away from a great run. The negative is that it's not looking like happening.

(by demanding it does not mean sacking the manager) Surely you have to go to the games before you can criticise Saints fans? That is like me saying those people who don't go seem to be always moaning, they will never settle etc... Most of the fans i know i think are among the most grounded people you could meet. People such as yourself might be able to forget our past year in a couple of months but i don't think they would. They are happy with where we are. You can try and put a downer on it but the reality is we are now a good team, we have lost just 3 times in the past 24 games, have yet to lose this year. Are 3rd in the form table. Have the leagues top scorer, have just bought the leagues 4th top scorer, have just drawn with a team that has lost just twice all season at home, have just had a couple of potential decent signings i.e Fonte, have over 20k in our home stadium in division 3, are 1 game from going to the new Wembley stadium, in the 5th round of the fa cup having a home game against our rivals etc etc etc The list of positives is long. The difference is people such as yourself forget them after 1 result. So no i do not think at all Saints fans are "scared to be run of the mill". They respect the hard work that is going on both behind the scenes and in front of it. And will not thrown their toys out of the pram based on a draw..... Thank fook people like you do not go to games as the club does not need your kind of support if it can be called that.

Whether that was Pardew's fault, the lack of preparation, the players he inherited - or the lack of confidence and winning mentality in the club, is a matter of opinion.
NickG Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Early League form this season has been disappointing corrected.
St Marco Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 League form this season has been disappointing It has yes. The first 10 games we had something like 1 win and 6 draws and 3 losses. Not good. But since then we have improved a lot. 16 games, 9 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses. Last month we were 3rd based on decembers games. This year we have played just 2 league games, both away at tough grounds and did not lose. People want us to do better, the question is better from what? We are doing miles better then we were at the start of the season. If we win both our games in hand on the last playoff spot team we will be just 3 games from that potential spot. There is a long long way to go. The problem is people compare us to everyone else. Xyz did it so why can't we? We need to compare ourslelf to ourself. If you went back in time to this time last year and told people that in 12 months time you would have all of the things me and nick have listed 99.9999% of the people asked would bite your hand off for it.
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 corrected. I forgot the season didnt start until we got our first win..........

Windmill Arm 2 Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 So you are trying to argue that our performances and form havent dropped, are you ? All of you saying we should be happy with a draw are symptomatic of the low-grade zero-rated ambition that our club has been blighted with for the past decade. NickG Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Our league form has been disappointing. disagree. 2 points per game is pretty good form. less than 1 point a game for 2 months was very disappointing. It was addressed and last 4 months showed dramatic improvement.
