modern matron Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Anyone happy with a point away against anyone in this league other than the current top 3 amaze me. Why?! hope you're joking.....or should we win 40 games?
Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Seduced by a mickey mouse trophy and FA Cup? Winning the JPT, getting to the quarters of the FA cup and finishing in the top ten would be a good season considering it's also a transitional one.
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Tanni-grey Thompson would perform better than Wotton
Micky Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 In the car now. Pretty poor performance. Didn't really deserve a point really - we got bossed for virtually the entire match. Shame Barnard fluffed his lines. If thats from somebody who was there then I'm more than happy with the point. Then again, I'm a happyclapper anyway.
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 hope you're joking.....or should we win 40 games? We will draw games etc. But we shouldnt be happy with a point.
modern matron Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 why did they not expect us..? because they lack ambition....scared of it.. leeds utd did it with -15.....that is all we have to say because we were out of business until about 2 weeks before the season started and -10......
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 because we were out of business until about 2 weeks before the season started and -10...... We are lucky to have a club i suppose? Change the record
NickG Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Thomas was doubtful so maybe not 100% fit for 90 mins. Jaidi seems to get rested.
benjii Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 IMO morgan can be with us all the way to the prem, the times i have seen him play and defo against MK Dons have proved this for me. We will be lucky to hold on to him if we fail our playoff targets, and he will become a very accomplished player. He is however a bit of a luxury at this level i do agree, but his range of passing and awareness can be a potent weapon if we ever stop playing the hoof ball. He needs a DM partner that can win a ball and give it to him, instead of a clumsy amateurish old warhorse that tbf gives everything but cannot play the game... hooooof wotton hooof. Technically we are a good side, Wotton's inclusion negates this. See, this is exactly the problem with his game. He is not dynamic and in a 4-4-2 just sits there hoping to ping passes around.. He has hardly ever got an assist, hardly ever been one of the most influential players in a game and never scored a goal in all the matches I have seen. When we play 4-4-2 it's like we only have one real central midfielder when he plays. Against MK Dons the other night he was far better because he obviously had clear instructions about where to play (ie in front of the other two). I don't doubt his potential but IMO he still frustrates consistently. Maybe our new midfielder will be someone who really compliments him.
Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 We are lucky to have a club i suppose? Change the record We should be doing better I suppose? Change the record
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 We should be doing better I suppose? Change the record We should. Lack of ambition = Saints fan syndrome
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 What relevance is that? They have lost one home game all season. On paper this was a good, or at the very leat decent, point with regards to this season. In reality it feels annoying because we were winning. We were unlucky that James went off. Our two best central midfielders (James and Hammond) are now both injured. We need to sign a new one. Still, we hardly ever lose and are having a good season. Sorry benji, i can see your optimism but i just can't agree. IMO, Hammond has been a let down, for all his running he just isn't good enough and probably won't feature much when we do get to the CCC if a similar war chest is opened. Secondly, i can't see how are distance from the playoffs compares to a good season, we should not be content with hardly ever losing, as we are not winning enough. Would charlton fans, norwich, leeds be happy if the roles were reversed ?? 10 point deduction or not ?? For they are the teams we need to compare against. As i said, i can usually see a bright side and was saying that playoffs should be a real target, not now, if we make it now it is a miracle. People are saying oh well, we will storm the league next year ?? I just can't see it if we cannot win games with a squad like ours.
modern matron Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Tanni-grey Thompson would perform better than Wotton what a pathetic post......
St Marco Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 why did they not expect us..? because they lack ambition....scared of it.. leeds utd did it with -15.....that is all we have to say I didn't expect it because im not a mong. I realise how difficult this league can be or any league can be without preparing for it right. We are simply paying the price for our slow start. As you mention Leeds got there. But how many years has it taken them to get to where they are now TDD? Are you seriously saying we should be the same as them in 3 months (it took them nearly 4 years) because we spent £3m?
madruss Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 If we get a draw at all remaining "hard places to go" will will not reach the play-offs. It's the "hard places to go" that we need to start winning at if we're going to reach the playoffs. Only one more 'hard place to go' to go though. And that's Norwich don't you know. 9 away games left, 24 points no problem
austsaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Rebuilding season; mid-table, outside chance of play offs last 16 of FA cup (with easy home draw to make it into quarter finals;)) need to draw a home game against MK Dons to get to Wembley final draw disappointing but lets not get carried away. Brentford at home against top teams; beat Norwich, Colchester, drew with Leeds, Charlton, Millwall lost to Swindon Spot on Nick. So high is the expectation of success now that results like tonight are hard to accept - yet had the club's current position been offered in August/September who wouldn't have grabbed it? Can anyone explain why Papa is featuring so little lately?
Greedyfly Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Hey...Can anyone shed any light on the Connolly injury. He definitely gives us that clinical finishing that can help win these sort of games and as ever the injury update on the OS is, well, not really an update. Apparently he may still make the Millwall game???? :S
Dig Dig Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 I dont know why we signed seabourne. Jaidi is OBVIOUSLY better than him and hes sat on the ****ing bench. I know pardew is ganna wanna show how big his **** is by throwing on his "own" team but FFS Jaidi is OBVIOUSLY BETTER!! Pardew signed Jaidi
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 See, this is exactly the problem with his game. He is not dynamic and in a 4-4-2 just sits there hoping to ping passes around.. I suppose put like that i have to agree really, plus putting him and wooden together in CM is asking for trouble. If you watch the way spiderman plays his football he may not get the assists but makes stuff happen when on the ball, that is all i am saying. When James is back and hopefully with a decent DM he can play in the position he played against MK Dons, then i hope you will begin to see what i see in him.
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 what a pathetic post...... True though, i honestly think i could do his job, on one leg and 2 stone heavier than i should be. No finesse, no technical ability, he can't even move without creaking !!!!!!! We have players here that can play good football, AP has specifically bought a CB that can come out of defence and play the ball to the midfield ?? Why then do we give it to a guy who's only dimension is a big punt up the pitch?
St Lightjaw Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 why are people being so disrespectful to brentford? it does my ****ing head in....they are a good team, they are not going to be relegated and are not in a relegation battle. They have caused all the top teams problems, and only Swindon have won there this season. they're a good side, and looking at the way the game panned out - a point is a good result. Top post S-Clarke :smt023 Well done Saints and roll on Stockport County. COYR!!! :partyman:
itchen Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Poor, poor result. Some bizarre team selections and substitutions. Bye-bye playoffs. I'd say disappointing rather than poor. And I agree that the team selection did look a bit bizzare. BUT. I think most people would agree that Pardew has been a good manager for us. We must therefore presume that he picks the team he thinks will get the best result and this depends on: 1) Who's fit 2) Who's in form 3) Who's done well in training 4) Who will do best against the particular opposition We can all see (or hear second hand via Dave Merrington) when things aren't working and I think it's only fair to assume that Pardew can see it too. But he has the advantage of knowing any problems there might be with his players that he doesn't necessarily want to share with the wider world. Yes. Sometimes even a good manager will make the wrong call but I son't think we should automatically assume that he does it out of ignorance, malice or incompetence. And I know you weren't saying that. And we still have a reasonable chance of making the playoffs and we'd all have settled for that when we were on minus 10.
Leicestersaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Disappointing performance by the sound of it - disappointing result.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Usual knee jerk bolix on here AGAIN! Thankfully we have a few sensible calm posters as well or this would be a awfull place...
TNT Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Midfield again non-existant especially when Schnederlin came on. Our results are immaterial if the teams in the playoffs keep winning like they do.
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Top post S-Clarke :smt023 Well done Saints and roll on Stockport County. COYR!!! :partyman: Well done saints? Applauding failure IMO..............
ericofarabia Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 A tad too much tinkering around maybe, unless either Perry or Jaidhi carrying knocks as well as Thommo. AP did say he'd pick a side to play a specific way against them taking into account their pitch ... maybe he didn't think Jaidhi and Perry would last the distance on a heavy pitch against a constant aerial barrage so went for younger players who were fresh having had the weekend off. Trouble is experience can count for more than running around. Wonder if this fixture was one of APs 14 must wins, or if he'll be content with a point?
jam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 could have been worse...probably fair result seeing as we hit the wood work twice...kelvin sounded brilliant...sounded like a great goal from james.. why are we struggling to finish teams of lately..? the league form all round is average IMO....if those who mention are right, pards is under pressure about the league form..which is everything pretty odd to see so many changes with stockport at home for the next game..??? has waigo done wrong..? Nothing that I've seen. I have no idea why Antonio gets starts ahead of him - it plays to neither player's strengths.
modern matron Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Sorry benji, i can see your optimism but i just can't agree. Since October 3rd League and Cup Played 25 W 17 D 5 L 3 F49 A29 League: Played 17 W9 D5 L3 F34 A 19 Pts 29 Frankly some of you have forgtten where we are coming from! The form above is FANTASTIC! Over a season promotion a CERTAINTY! Please get behind the team... COYR
M271 Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Last 5 league matches LWLDD, obviously not good enough form for play offs but 4 of the 5 matches were away to teams above us in the league. The last 2 league match results that have been draws have felt worse because we have not hung on to the lead, if we had come from behind to draw 1-1 it wouldn't feel so bad to me as it then feels like 1 point won rather than 2 points lost. I do feel that we have lost some attacking threat since Connelly was injured, I also feel that Pardew should bring Papa on with at least 15 minutes to go to give us a better chance of getting another goal.
S-Clarke Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 A tad too much tinkering around maybe, unless either Perry or Jaidhi carrying knocks as well as Thommo. Wonder if this fixture was one of APs 14 must wins, or if he'll be content with a point? quote me if im wrong, but i don't think Jaidi has ever played a mid-week game after featuring at the weekend? or at least not many... he didn't have the cleanest medical when he joined, so i'd guess he has a few knocks he has to nurse most weeks.
BadgerBadger Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Can't get my head round the lack of a balanced view of our situation - soooo much negativity, just-don't-get-it!!!!
saint_stevo Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Nothing that I've seen. I have no idea why Antonio gets starts ahead of him - it plays to neither player's strengths. Agreed. Antonio is ****e. Yeah he has scored recently but still generally been shocking. Can't cross, no trick, no idea....
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Usual knee jerk bolix on here AGAIN! Thankfully we have a few sensible calm posters as well or this would be a awfull place... Tbf, i am usually pretty calm and sensible, and definately not a knee jerker. But to lose 6 games and draw 9 is not acceptable form imo, in fact it is pretty dire. And those who say in the last 6 matches we have had good form, exactly how many have we won ?
teamsaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 in a recent interview AP seemed to suggest that midfield dominance and possession weren't at the top of his priority list. Although I agree that the two main ingrdients for success are a really solid defence , and the best strikers you can afford, i'm really concerned(especially for next season) that we really don't dominate games the way a top two team should. Our firepower has saved us many times this season, but no team can rely on that for top two form.Really think the midfield needs work. Not sure how though.
Liquidshokk Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Can we officially stop talking about the playoffs yet? The unrealistic target is what is making draws like this hurt more than any draw should do. If it wasn't for that dream i'd have been happy with that point.
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Last 5 league matches LWLDD Exactly, And that is my point. So are our last 5 matches really a show of our good form ?? Because it is just not what i am expecting from a team of our supposed qualities. I just don't get what other people are seeing that i am not.
St Lightjaw Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Well done saints? Applauding failure IMO.............. I'll tell you what, i'll give you a bell when we win the champions league and premiership, then you'll know when to pull your head out of your arse. In the meantime, keep it stuck where the sun don't shine, then you can ignore points gained at lowly little teams like brentford/millwall.
alpine_saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Midfield again non-existant especially when Schnederlin came on. Nonononono - you are NOT allowed to say things like that about Schneiderlin on here. He's our best player, donchyaknow ?

Perhaps he is being a tad over the top but can you really say you are happy with Letting a sloppy goal in against Millwall Giving the game away to Brentford Our last 5 games recording 1 win !!! 1 And our position in the league ??

In L1. Not quite playing L2 football is it.....
jam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Agreed. Antonio is ****e. Yeah he has scored recently but still generally been shocking. Can't cross, no trick, no idea.... I don't think he's ****e (although sometimes he has looked embarrassingly bad)! I thought I read somewhere on here that he might cause the skates some problems. I'm guessing that whoever wrote it was joking. He's got promise and I think his game is getting better - he took his goal against MK very well and I just don't believe he would have had the ability to do that earlier in the season. But why start him? Why not use him as a sub, let him learn the game more and get more out of Papa who is miles ahead of him in terms of technical ability and sense?
Didcot Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Tbf, i am usually pretty calm and sensible, and definately not a knee jerker. But to lose 6 games and draw 9 is not acceptable form imo, in fact it is pretty dire. And those who say in the last 6 matches we have had good form, exactly how many have we won ? Agree. Especially considering the money spent and players signed. Need to do better but don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining, considering what may have been before the season started.

Thedelldays Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Oh yeah - silly me, forgot that we're the finished article we should be near enough for this season...
jam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Nonononono - you are NOT allowed to say things like that about Schneiderlin on here. He's our best player, donchyaknow ? It might have been a fair comment if the other central midfielder (apparently someone was playing alongside James and then Schneiderlin) was having a storming game. Who was the other central midfielder? I can't remember him being mentioned...
jam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 he's not better than Papa... Apologies if it was not clear - that was my point..!
