for_heaven's_Saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 I think the more AP plays it down, the more pressure there'll be on Pompey, so keep up the good work, Pards.
St_Tel49 Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 At the end of the day beating Poopey will not feature highly on his cv whereas finishing near a play off position will. Unfortunately these days managers have to keep more of an eye on the bigger picture and satisfying our rabid desires (my own included) by thrashing the skates pales into insignificance put up against a good showing in the bed and butter business of gaining promotion. You been watching "Last Tango in Paris"? ;-)
thefunkygibbons Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 The most important game is always the next one Playoffs first as if we get promoted we will be playing Portsmouth in the Championship twice next season anyway
sadoldgit Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 Although this fixture will generate a lot of interest it probably has done us no favours. Our prime objective has to be promotion and AP is right to try and play it down, although he has no chance of that happening!
SaintRichmond Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 It's just another game to us vs Portsmuff and that our main task is the league. I'm slightly worried by those comments as he needs to know the score here. Anyway my points is this. Which current Saints players know the passion of the Southampton people? The current squad leaves me with just Lallana & Mills, do you think the rest will have the passion or bottle to want it badly? Pardew is right IMHO I know we have drawn our "bitter rivals", but, in this instance, I do not care about the result, or the FA Cup MY PRIORITY IS THE LEAGUE because if we do NOT get into the play offs, and get promoted, most of the hard work done by Leibherr/Cortese/Pardew etc will go right out of the window, and Players will NOT want to be in DIVISION 1 for another season IMHO, Saints fans should realise that the battle to get into the play offs is FAR FAR greater than trying to bit our rivals down the road Drawing Portsmouth in the Cup was the worst thing that could have happened to us IMHO The driving ambition has to be PROMOTION, PROMOTION, PROMOTION:cool:

If we make the playoffs it will be a bonus and I believe the players brought in have probably been told the same before signing on. A final at wembley and a win against portsmuff will be a bonus this season and we haven't taken the Johnstones paint trophy lightly this season. Next season will see the big push should we not achieve it this season imo.
St Landrew Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 I should imagine AP's first reaction on seeing the draw was, Oh sh!t, as when interviewed after the Ipswich game, he said he would prefer NOT to have Pompey at this stage. So bouncing around the room he might have been, but I suspect that was because Stephanie Moore pulled number 1 out of the hat and not Geoff Thomas. saint.tom.clancy Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 In reply to the original post, and considering the cuptied/inelligible players we won't have, i'd definately be expecting wotton, thomas, davis, mills and llalana to all understand the passion of the fans, maybe in wottons and thomas's cases because of their personalities rather than birthplace. Maybe even throw lloyd james into that lot! But obviously they will all understand how passionate a derby is. But perhaps saints/pompey has that little extra edge? Just pray the players don't bottle it on the day!
