Matthew Le God Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 I think the Ipswich game proved that we could improve our first team in just about every position. They were quicker than us, controlled the ball better than us in midfield and had a much stronger defence. We managed to put away more chances than they did and won a one off match but I have no doubts that they would beat us more often than not if we played regularly. Fonte Hammond Schneiderlin Otsemobor Seaborne Murty Connolly All weren't available against Ipswich. Yes, Ipswich outplayed Saints at times but that is alot of 1st team players to be missing. Yet the squad was still good enough to win
Ken Tone Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Excellent post. ML and NC have now realised that income for this season is going to be way above budget of that projected a few months ago. If they're plowing that profit back into the playing staff good on them Whatever long term plans ML has for SFC I have a feeling it will be a far better club than he inherited Maybe it isn't just that the income is better than expected (though I am sure that is so.) Maybe Liebherr is also finding that he enjoys playing with his new football team more than he expected to? After all this is apparently his first venture into the game. Perhaps he's enjoyed the matches at St Mary's and is now prepared to put in more money, more quickly, than he was at first? K.
Alanh Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Alanh - what about Hammond? Surely he is a 'first teamer'? He's a decent player, and I think he would be a squad player, but for me there were players in the Ipswich midfield who were better than Hammond and who set a higher benchmark for us to aspire to when we are promoted. FWIW I think we'll end up having to change about 50% of the first team between promotion from L1 to be able to compete in the CCC.
iansums Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 I think the choice of words from the OP is a little inappropriate, I think ML & NC will be extremely careful how any money is spent. However if true it's good news. I would love to know how much operating profit the club has made since ML took over.

Was ML there on Saturday?, I was in the Itchen (for a change) and could'nt see.
saintjay77 Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 I was speculating more on who Pardew would be playing next year. My main problem with Morgan is that he is too inconsistent. Time is on his side though but he has a tendency to be anonymous at times. I think Hammond will definitely be playing for us next season, though I accept what you say. Maybe a CM pairing of Stock and Schneiderlin would be better? I'm sure we will see. I don't rate James at all however. You say a midfielder is a must but who else would you sign as an extra? I'm struggling to think of any other position where we could sign anyone apart from maybe a pacy striker? You dont rate james but for some reason Pards does. Its been repoted a few times how much he praises him. The reaction he gave James when he subbed him on sat suggested that he was very pleased with him and I believe he is part of Pards plans for a long time to come. Personally I think the team we have can be and should be better than they are now. 1 or 2 more signings would be useful but at some point I think it would be wise to concentrate on getting this team performing to the best of there ability which is higher than they are doing now. If they can do that then they should be able to hold there own in the CCC and the need for new players then will be to see us progress further. The big test will be to see if Pards can get them playing as I think they can. We know WGS got the team playing better than we thought they could so Pards should be able to raise the standard. At times on Sat we were hoofing and being run ragged. But pards got them playing there game after half time and I thought we deserved the result. If he can get that game more consitent then this team can do very well IMO.

Window Cleaner Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 I IMO, spiderman, if he is not bought has the ability to play with us all the way up to the premiership, watching him against MK Dons in the week he was a different class, he is better than Hammond and is still improving. Having watched Arsenal "reserves" yesterday afternoon I just couldn't believe just how useless all their "ones for the future" were. Just complete junk every one of them, even Theo was lamentable.I could still see Arsene being interested in Morgan in the summer because what he has in reserve obviously has no aptitude for top level football.

Also very interesting that the FA cup is now starting to be a real earner. 5th round televised game £247,500, winner awarded £180,000. Also read somewhere that winner of JPT worth £400,000 plus.

Yeah, i think a lot of people do not realise his ability and definately his awareness of the game. In a few years he will be a fantastic player, definately the player with the most potential in the team, IMHO i think you will begin to see Lallana stagnate as the boy has all the ability technically in the world but does not strike me as a player with a footballing brain and so he cannot always see a pass. He will become a high level DM in my opinion.
Deanovski Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 When does schneiderlins contract expire i think we should try and tie him up long term. I also hope some one can instill that he should stay her long term, if they havent already.
sussexsaint Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Just can't stop smiling, what a difference a year makes

Must have at least 2 and a half seasons left, I think his contract was four years starting in June 2008,might even be 5 years though.
Andy_Porter Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 If this is true and Leibherr is ready to spend big we should put in a bid for Shelvey and Hoolahan try and get one of them. An attacking left sided midfielder would be perfect. Would take a lot of convincing mind...

An attacking left sided midfielder would be perfect. Would take a lot of convincing mind... Spending big is relative really. We'll probably make something in the region of approximately roughly 700K from our forthcoming spat with Skates. That's a lot of money when you're in League 1 and apparently don't need it anyway.Might as well invest it in the team because otherwise the taxman will soon have most of it off you.
Andy_Porter Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Who do you think we will need in the summer? I would let Perry go and then we will need a CB. Let Murty and (possibly) Otesemebor go if he doesn't cut it and replace with a RB. May have to consider a new striker with pace if Connoly continues to be injured. Get rid of Wotton, probably Waigo and make James backup which could mean a new RM (keep Antonio as an impact sub.) Still need to sort out our LM IMO and decide where Lallana is best at (if he is still here of course.) Team for next season assuming we keep who we want (apart from Lallana who I think will go): Davis new signing Fonte Jaidi/new signing Harding new signing Hammond new signing new signing Lambert/Barnard New signing I think our 18 man squad for match days will be Davis - Bart Harding - Fonte - Jaidi - Seaborne - Mills - New RB Schneiderlin - Hammond - Antonio - James - Lallana - New winger - New attacking mid Lambert - Connolly - Barnard Not much point picking a starting XI imo but I think something like that will be the main basis of our matchday squad.

We must have made a lot of money from our cup runs this season, I imagine a JPT win must be worth a fair bit.
JRM Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 You can work out from here how much we have made from the FA Cup so far this year, amounts for winning each round, plus the tv money for the 5th round http://www.thefa.com/TheFACup/FACompetitions/TheFACup/FACupPages/FACupPrizeFund20082009.aspx IF we made it through to the 6th round (which would also be televised we could get up towards a £1M earnings from the run as a whole adding in gate receipts.

You think right, four years. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southampton/7477504.stm Does anyone know if it was Georges Prost who put recommended Morgan to us (or vice versa)?

So basically, assuming the Poopey game is live on tv we will have made almost a half a million from prize money and tv alone, before adding gate receipts. As has been suggested that is a lot of money for League 1 teams and has paid for Barnard and Seabourne with change left over

It has been a good run, enjoyed it so far and the 5th round tie makes it all worth while, ok we could have played a weakened team in early rounds and gone out, but the funds raised by winning a few games will help us justify bringing in new signings. prize money already confirmed - £202,500 Televised 5th round = £247,500 brings it to £450,000 Win 5th round and get another £180,000 prize money, plus another £247,500 tv money for 6th round. plus gate receipts and knock on effect of increased crowds for other games.

Andy_Porter Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 No Thomas No Waigio then Can understand No Perry Wotton and perhaps Holmes I don't think Pardew rates Waigo, I like him from what we've seen but he doesn't get much of a look in for whatever reason so I can't see us taking him on a permanent deal. New RB = Otsemobor or Thomas (rejuvenated) Possibly would be good if either of them really kick on and we can spend the money on the rest of our squad. Thomas has looked good at right back over the last couple of games, I thought he looked lost against Leeds but since then he's done very well from what i've seen and gives us an extra bit of muscle in defence.
Andy_Porter Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 having no waigo would be stupid. Do you really think we will take up the option of signing him? Seems that Pardew rates Lallana, Antonio and James ahead of him on the right.

I too dont think Waigio will be with us next season but I think he may be on the bench for the remainder of the season - it is really interesting to see who Pardew picks tomorrow . I think we need a stronger team tomorrow than on Saturday I thought the MK Dons lineup was good but I dont think Wotton will play

saint_stevo Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Do you really think we will take up the option of signing him? Seems that Pardew rates Lallana, Antonio and James ahead of him on the right. Wrongly. Antonio is crap, Waigo is twice the player

John B Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Morgan in for Wotton then? we have so many options now can only be a good thing. He played v MK Dons
John B Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Are we signing League 1 players at the moment or ones that will be capable of performing well in the CCC.
CHAZZA 92 Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 I don't think we need to sign any more players now until the summer because players like wotton and james have stood up to the plate and now look solid centre mids and a are more than capable of performing well in league 1 so i think AP should reassess at the end of the season and see if he needs to add more than he's already got.
SNSUN Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Wrongly. Antonio is crap, Waigo is twice the player I know you have a vendetta against Antonio, but he is far from crap. He is raw. Seeing him play against MK Dons, and again at the weekend, shows me that he could have a long term future is we hang on to him. His work rate is brilliant, his passing is a lot better than when I first saw him this season, and his throw ins are a threat. He definitely freaks out the opposition defence with his pace, and is developing a poachers instinct. He can be crap, sometimes even in the same game as when he's brilliant though. His touch can desert him, and he tends to drift out of his position. Don't get me wrong, I like Waigo, and I hope we keep him, but he's not being used, Pardew prefers Antonio, and currently I can see why. The same thing goes with James. I'm a critic of his, having seen him before only in a right back role. He never looked at home there, although this season he looked slighly more comfortable in that position than last season, but in the last two games he's been in midfield, I've been impressed. His passing is very good. He's a better midfielder than he is a defender that's for sure.
SFC Forever Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Players will want to come here when we are in the CCC. League 1 has no sex appeal. Can't comment on the Prem, because I have no idea how our wage budget would fare up there. My one regret so far this season is that the southern final is over two legs or finishes after the transfer window closes. If we were already due a Wembley trip with a distinct chance of another that would possibly be enough to attract higher level players.
saintjay77 Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Wrongly. Antonio is crap, Waigo is twice the player Untill Waigo can learn how to stay onside I think Pards will continue to disagree with you on that one.
ribbo Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Untill Waigo can learn how to stay onside I think Pards will continue to disagree with you on that one. not a problem of late.
Andy_Porter Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 He played v MK Dons Yeah I know that, thought you where on about Saturdays line up. If Wotton is being rested then it will have to be either Holmes, Waigo or Barnard coming in depending on which formation Pardew plays.
Legod Third Coming Posted 25 January, 2010 Posted 25 January, 2010 Hello Chris Coleman. Hi there Neil Warnock. Evening Mark Stimson. Sean O'Driscoll, fancy seeing you here. How come you're all on a poxy fans webforum at this time of night? Worse, they previously had our owner pegged fir a crane driver...
