Win at all cost, b*gger the football seems to have been the motto of the day. No problem unless that becomes the norm.

We were rock solid until pards took James & Wotton off. Maybe they were knackered, maybe had knocks but whatever they were poor changes wit neither Gillett or Wilshire having a clue how to go about their task or where to play. Hence a goal to the Tractor Boys and with mor etime at their disposal, the likelihood is that they would have beaten us.

Still, they didn't so there we are into the 5th round and earned probably an away tie to Bolton... on a wet & freezing Wednesday night but hey! that's the glamour of the FA Cup for you.

Who is Wilshire you are talking about??? This is a Southampton website and we are talking about Southampton in case you are a supporter of someone else and have got lost on the internet.

After everything I've written about Antonio, and none of it appreciative, I finally got to see something of why AP rates him. Talent it isn't, of that I'm certain, but I saw pace and a singular focus on getting towards the oppositions goal. What he has got, probably because he's not sure himself of what he is about to do next, is total and uncompromising unpredictability. He scared the proverbial bejeezus out of Ipswich and attracted the attention of three defenders at times.

I'm still sad that Waigo, who is a real talent, obviously hasn't got a future here, but for as long as we're winning games of football it's difficult not to be cheerful.

Lancashire wasn't involved at any time in their goal, it was one of the defenders that missed a tackle and the ball dropped for Counago.

A lot of people on here criticising him obviously weren't there or weren't watching him, as he didn't do anything wrong the time he was on the field.

Lancashire needs to go out on loan again with a better team than Grimsby and play regularly. He did well at Grimsby.

Yes...but Barnard played 25 mins of the second half - a period we did dominate. I'm pretty sure AP changed the formation at half time/gave players different instructions - no doubt Barnard included. We didn't suddenly pick up after Barnard was subbed, though the injection of pace added a more natural menace.

Ultimately, I'm trying to find a positive in things - that we were able to stifle Ipswich and create chances with Barnard on the pitch after a woeful first half in which nothing clicked.

The other, more pessimistic interpretation is that we will struggle with Barnard and Lambert in a conventional 4-4-2 and this is not necessarily an Ipswich thing as you suggest- ever since Connolly put himself in the frame with some excellent goals, we've had similar problems against some very ordinary L1 teams.

As I say, I cant believe that Barnard was brought in to warm the bench. But that's one possible conclusion if you believe that 4-3-3/4-5-1 is more effective than 4-4-2 and there are other players who while not head-to-head/individually superior to Barnard or Connolly (and I think Connolly is a better player than Barnard) nonetheless fit that formation. What to do???

I think it is quite harsh to judge Barnard's performance yesterday. He met up with the squad on Friday for training, had one session, barely knows the players and how they play. In a week's time he will look very good.

Apart from the odd pass we didn't pass the ball at all today.

Having watched Leeds v Spurs we are nowhere near yet.

I respect much of your posts but they would would be more believable if you qualified some of the more misleading statements. There certainly were occasions in the second half when we put together some decent passing movements.

And sure, we are still raw and nowhere near Premiership Spurs in quality, nor Leeds as an all-round team (who have more players scoring from all over the pitch) but you are stating the obvious.

BTW have you ever sung the 'We're just like Brazil' anthem?

so as he's played for 2 clubs already this season that makes it impossible for him to go on loan again this season other than to Grimsby, right? or not

Gillett the same

Not so certain about Loans

Rasiak played for Derby and Spurs one season as was then loaned to us

Hope it didn't sound harsh - was in fact defending Barnard in response to chez's post that suggested we only brightened up after Pards switched things and Antonio was brought on.

The bigger issue is that we've played better this season with 4-5-1/4-3-3. If we go with that formation, what does it mean for the number of out-and-out strikers we play? Can Barnard adapt? Or does playing Barnard force us to go 4-4-2, a formation with which we've struggled at times?

Perhaps Barnard will be the missing link to playing an effective 4-4-2. Who knows but its a nice selection headache to have...

You may be right as I recollect a problem with the Tottenham player on loan to Portsmouth not being able to play for anybody except Tottenham if their ban isn't lifted. In that case back to Grimsby if possible.

With Wotton hoisting everything into the air and James struggling, with Ipswich passing the ball around we didn't keep or pass the ball for most of the game. In fact we have been pretty poor in that respect, in at least the last half dozen matches except the MKD match where we passed the ball well.

The comment was a comparison with Leeds not Spurs which was more relevant. If we are to have ambitions of winning this league next year we will have to match their balance, pace and teamwork, at present we are nowhere near.

No, because we don't and never have, even existed on the same football planet.

He isn't great on the ball, his passing is ordinary, but he did a good job tracking their midfielders forward runs and got in the way a lot. I don't think they would have scored their goal if he was still on the pitch.

I agree that he is integral to the midfield in that respect, but I just think that aside from his decent defensive work he's not just got that much else in the locker. He only ever passes backwards or hoofs the ball up the pitch to nobody in particular, and he didn't really win many headers yesterday for quite a big bloke. Agree about the goal though, I think if he was on the pitch they might not have got through as easily as they did.

However, as much as he's a decent player and important in our midfield, I just think that there are better options out there and that we shouldn't stick with Wotton in the long term. Does Schneiderlin not play quite a similar role?

Unusually for me with anybody's assessment I agree with all of this - excellent summary - we were watching the same game!:D:D

My pleasure ;)

Just watched it again, i'm 100% sure. The player who tackled was on the left of defence and had longish blonde hair. Lancashire is bald.

Which proves that some people go to the match and see what they want to see and not actually what happens.

Dont read my posts then.

Mods, are we goint to do something about the abuse ? I am being called all the names under the sun, yet it wasnt me who, for example, called Lancashire "the worst player to wear the red & white EVER"

Stop making silly comments then Alps.

First chance I've had to get on the Internet since watching the game, so with the Ipswich game to talk about and the Pompey tie, I could be on the internet for ages tonight!!!

What a game, real cup tie stuff. The atmosphere was brilliant towards the end of the game, I was sat in the Itchin near the dug out so was giving it the beans when the "Keano Keano what's the Score" chants echoed around the stadium! I'd say we deserved to win, but it was more of less 50/50. The difference was we took two of our chances and they only took one.

Our defence was very impressive, even without the newbies. Jaidi, Thomas and Mills were immense, I bet Harding is wondering whether he'll get back in! Full credit to the two boys in central midfield too, James and Wotton didn't stop working, and the same can be said for Barnard and Holmes. It was clear Barnard wanted to make an impression, he worked his socks off up front to get the ball. He'll be good for us if he keeps that work rate up.

So the ratings:

Davis: Made a number of key saves. Kept us in the game time and time again, I was very impressed with him. 8

Thomas: Just edged Mills to be my MOTM. Both against the MK Dons and yesterday against Ipswich I was impressed with him, he's the obvious choice at right back IMO in Murty's absence. I hope he keeps his place in the team instead of Semi - brilliant goal aside, his defending was excellent and he was still getting forward when possible. 9

Jaidi - Won everything in the air. He is a man mountain and won't be giving his spot up easily. 8

Perry - Did his job with usual determination. 7

Mills - Is a very good little left back, always willing to get forward, him and Holmes were run ragged for parts of the game, but still let little through. 8

Lallana - Is going through a poor patch of form, his first half performance I thought was poor, however in the second half he really upped his performance and the little tricks were coming off for him. 7

James - People think he's not good enough, but his passing is very good. I thought he had a good game. 8

Wotton - Does what is asked of him, works hard. 7

Holmes - Wasn't brilliant, but was slightly better than average. Was full of running though, his face was the reddest of everyones when the lads came off for half time. 7

Lambert - I thought his lob was in. On of the better games I've seen him in. 8

Barnard - Didn't stop running, bags of work rate. He'll come good soon enough. 7

Subs: Antonio - I continue to be impressed by him. Didn't know why he was dropped but apparently had knackered himself out! Not suprised. That was a poachers instinct for the goal. 8

Gillett - Good to see him get a game! 7

Lancashire - I don't think it's a suprise that he came on and Ipswich scored. Not a blemish on Olly per se, but it changed the shape of the team for the last few minutes. 6

Another victory, another performance, let's hope we can continue it in the League games when it matters!
