yorkie Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Don't know if I want the skates in the next round..If we got them at home and sold out we would end up giving them far to much cash......! Look we need to put them in their place I'd take them at SMS in the next round and break a few blue hearts. Let's face it - a patched up team doomed as all the stars have to be sold or not paid! Couldn't be better time to play them - what do they know of a derby atmosphere in the fortress SMS? Great win today - a bit nail biting waiting the result after it was announced we had five minutes to endure after they scored. Stil who cares onwards and upwards - still dreaming of Wembley thrice this year!
RonManager Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Your Honour: I would just like to say in my defence that I posted the fact that we had kept a clean sheet thus far until the 90th minute when suddenly - my fingers slipped on the keyboard & I mistakenly typed "another clean sheet" when in reality - I meant to type "another clean sweep" - a reference to our back back four mopping up nicely. I apologise to all members of the forum for opening my gob prematurely - and thus causing an instant jinx (as per usual with Saints) - but as it happens - we did win anyway - and I therefore ask the moderator's to review my continued membership of SWF with leniency and compassion before banning me indefinitely. Furthermore - I promise - from this day forward - to never gob off about 'clean sheets' or anything to do with goals/the game - I will just shut up - remain quiet - and post match photos whilst the game is going on. .comsaint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Excellent. I'd vote for probation because your posts are normally good, because I don't think you have any "previous", and because you posted some great piccies today. But not even Rumpole of the Bailey could help you if you do it again. I'll send you the bill for cleaning my underwear this week. Better still, I'll send you the underwear. EEewww. I wouldn't much fancy our chances against any of the remaining teams away (except Reading) unless of course Notts County beat Wigan in their replay or S****horpe beat Citeh. Amazingstoke Saint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Just got in from the game. This is probably the best opposition we have faced this season at home. We were fighting for the first 25 minutes to stay with it - but we did and we grew in confidence and stature. In the second half we really took the game to them. We must learn to play for the full 90+ minutes. A great performance and a great result. Well done the supporting Tractor girls and boys. mcjwills Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Thought Thomas had a cracking game, his goal was superb, hell of a curl on it, from where I was sat in the Kingsland you really saw how good the goal was. Arizona Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Great result and we completely outplayed them second half in my book. Nearly shat myself when they scored and 5 minutes were read out. Belter of a goal from Thomas. Of all the people to do that. Top corner from 30 yards out, spent the rest of the match shouting "Shoot!!" whenever he got the ball. Davis - 5 I crapped myself whenever anything went into the box. Not his most assured game. Thomas - 8 A good performance capped of by a fantastic goal. Worth the entrance fee on its own. 2 goal of the season candidates in our last 2 matches. Jaidi - 7 Excellent in the air, but we seemed to lose everything which didn't go in his direction. Perry - 6 Beaten in the air a lot but defended well on the deck. Mills - 8 Man of the match, some great forward runs, linked up well with Holmes and a couple of brilliant crosses. Improved defensively second half. Lallana - 6 Not his best game for us, very little impact first half. A bit livelier after the break. Wotton - 5 Not a very good player and looked pretty amature at times just hoofing it anywhere. James - 5 Never imposed himself on the midfield and never looked up to much creatively. Set pieces were also carp. Holmes - 7 Brilliant second half after a quite first half. Works well with Mills. I'd take second half Holmes over left midfield Lallana. Lambert - 5 Had little service but didn't do much either. Had a hald decent effort late on when he put a lazy backpass on to the roof of the net from 40 yards out. Barnard - 6 A reasonable debut, but didn't have all that much service so hard to impress. Worked hard, but missed a great chance from about 10 yards out in the first half. Subs: Antonio - 8 All he did was foul and score goals FFS! THIS is the player to bring on defending a lead. Not Lancashire and stick 11 men in the box. He frightened the life out of them and kept the pressure off until after they scored. We must sign him in summer. Gillett - 5 Didn't do all that much when he came on. If he wasn't a midget he might have nodded in a late Mills cross. Lancashire - n/a Don't know why we brought him on. I don't care if he is an extra defender, we never look better with him on the pitch.
Toomer Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 (edited) Thomas scored a great goal when I exspected him just to sit the ball up in the box. We were over ran in midfield for most of the first half, AP changed the system at half time and we looked a lot more solid. Antonio with the second sealed the result only to give Ipswich a life line at the death, where the hell did the fourth get 5 mins added time from? All in all a good game Thomas my M O M not just for his goal but his all round game today. Edited 23 January, 2010 by Toomer

CanadaSaint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 We were over ran in midfield for most of the first half, AP changed the system at half time and we looked a lot more solid. That's a really good sign - we have the squad depth to make changes when things aren't working, and a manager who seems to know what changes to make. When could we last say both of those things? Or even one of them?
Toadhall Saint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Very very happy with the result but even more so as we were playing 442. So stop believing you actually have an opinion that other people wan't to hear. You don't. Anyone slating Lancashire today (Especially people who didn't go to the game) should just hush. He's probably rarely played in a defensive midfield role before and clearly isn't the most experienced player in the world like Wotton but he did a job in the last 5 minutes of a game that was always going to be all Ipswich. He was on for 5 mins. Ipswich were always going to be all over us in that 5 mins whether we had Wotton, Lancashire or Essien in that role and he did a good as job as anyone of them in that 5 minutes. toofarnorth Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Great game. I thought Mills was immense and on that form Harding will struggle to get his place back. It seems obvious to me that he is more of a defensive player as looks a million times better at left back than when he has come on to replace lallana on the wing. We did have to do a bit of back to the wall defending at times but i thought we did it well. Not a bad performance from any of our players IMO. Weston Saint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 OK reality check time. First half we were outplayed, pulled out of shape, second to lose ball and too much hoof and poor passes out of defence. Second half we competed more but when we went 2-0 up a few of us looked at each other and agreed it did not reflect the game. Just as well Ipswich failed to penetrate. Looked a bit like Saints of old, pretty football without result. However, a good game and well done to the team. Thought Mills was all over the place in the first half but found his feet and had a very good second half. Thomas did well (what a goal), as did Jaidi but Perry was my man in defence. Played a very intelligent role almost in a sweeper role behind the others. James & Wooton were horrendous. No shape, no bite and no real idea. Lallana had a quieter game but he is carrying a groin strain (has for the last few weeks) and likely to be rested on Tuesday. Holmes had a good game and deserves to have a run in the team on his last few performances. Gillett (who is still trying to sort out his deal with Doncaster but they are not coming up with the right offer) was buzzing when he came on Lambert was his usual self. Worked hard. Barnard looked sharp and as he settles in he will be a good addition. Worked hard tracking back in the second half before he was subbed. Good striker goal from Antonio. Great win but Ipswich showed we still have a long way to go.

marc_saint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Just got back to Swindon. St Marco Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Really good game and we deserved to win. They had like 2 proper chances....In 2nd half they were **** poor. Only downside is i have now lost my voice from the 2 games in the past week My motm was Thomas, i really hope we keep him as he is perfect for right back. The guy never ducks a challenge and overall does the simple things right, which it is all about. I would put some pics up, especially one where Keano was having a go at the 4th official which was funny, but got to go out! Well done to the lads they did great. As things stand i think that makes us the last League One side still in it (have not seen the leeds score)?. Be great to get Portsmouth at home next round. But can see it being Chelsea away. Either way i feel more confident about playing a prem team then this time last year! COYR

Give it to Ron Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 I thought Jaidi was outstanding in the air and even on the floor today, great game from Thomas - best in a Saints shirt. Perry had a wobbly 5 minutes just before half time but recovered to have a very good match overall. I don't think I have seen so many crosses come into our box as the first half and oh how I wish we had a keeper that would come and claim the ball on the 6 yard line. Interesting debut from Barnard he clearly has a football brain - he took up some dangerous positions and against League 1 defenders will score a few. For 200k he looks a decent acquistion but can't see how he can be a Lambert replacement by his size, pace and game as he is another Saga type player. A bit livelier after the break. Wotton - 5 Not a very good player and looked pretty amature at times just hoofing it anywhere. Perry and Wotton along with Jaidi were essential to our spine and making us win today imo. Perry was rarely beaten in the air infact and is such a clever defender. A neutruel who came along with me today said him and Wotton were along with Jaidi the best players on the pitch. Good in the air when crosses came into the box and when players had the ball in the centre of the park Wotton was chasing them down and forcing the ball wide. Very rarely did they open us up, maybe once or twice in the first half when our midfielders got over excited and started running round like headless chickens but alot of the game we were just solid and mainly down to Wotton, Perry and Jaidi. Imo. Also Lallana worked his nuts off again and when bought into the centre his quick feet was essential to our counter attacking plans. Very very happy with the result but even more so as we were playing 442. We played 451 for more than half the match. HTH. Still hate Antonio Such a love hate player. Technically he is shocking but his physical attributes and attitude make him such a threat. Especially when bought on. Love him sometimes hate him others but i'm so glad we have him. SuperMikey Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Just got back from the game, and what a result! Went thinking we'd sneak a draw and get a replay but i've come away really pleasantly surprised. Our fans were great today, made a lot of noise and the boys really upped their game to overcome quite a good Ipswich side. Was great to stick two fingers up at Roy Keane and get a bit of revenge. P*mpey in the next round please! Davis 6 - Didn't really have much to do in the first half, dealt well with heavy pressure in the second half. Thomas 8 (MoM) - Great performance from Thommo. Fantastic goal from him, and he was really solid in the air and strong in the tackle. Got caught out of position a few times but Lallana covered well for him. Mills 8 - A very close second for my man of the match. Average in the first half but really got stuck in well in the second half and made some excellent tackles. Does Harding have some serious competition now? Jaidi 7 - Very solid at the back, never lost a header and also made some brilliant tackles. Perry 7 - Did well against Stern John and made some good tackles, also cleared the ball off the line. Wotton 5.5 - For a supposed midfield 'hardman' he didn't really make himself very present today. Anonymous for most of the game apart from the odd hoof or backwards pass. Would rather see someone else start ahead of him on tuesday. James 6 - Made some good passes and linked up well with Lallana on the wing. Not his best performance, but did okay. Lallana 6 - Again, a bit anonymous but for a few good touches and passes. Obviously the guy isn't a winger and he doesn't really like to run at his marker. Would prefer to see Antonio or Waigo on the wing instead so that Lallana can play a more central role. Holmes 7 - Good game for him today. Always stuck by him when he was injured and on the fringe of the first team and said he'd come good, and he came good today. Couple of lovely passes including some very clever backheels and linked up well with Mills. Barnard 6.5 - Decent debut. Worked really hard up front but didn't have much time on the ball to do anything. Had a couple of good chances earlier on that maybe on another day he would've put away, but he's got the rest of his Saints career to make up for it (starting with a hat-trick against Brentford please!). Lambert 6.5 - Ipswich were all over him, marked him all day and didn't give him any room, but he still did okay. Couple of good flick-ons to carry on attacks and some good crosses and link-up play. Maybe he does need a rest though, looked quite tired out there today. Barnard and Connolly up front on tuesday methinks. Subs Gillett - Did alright, we've got better options in our squad although they're not available at the moment, so hopefully he'll stick around. Antonio - Did well when he came on, strong and pacy and converted a nice little tap-in to put us 2-0 up. Lancashire - Still a bit shaky, but with time his confidence will grow and he'll get better. Andy_Porter Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Not got much time to comment on todays game but Jaidi was an absolute beast at the back and just won everything, I can't wait to see him alongside Fonte on Tuesday. Easily our MOTM, Walters, Priksin, Counago, Collback etc none of them got anywhere near him all game. The two full backs had great game, Mills was brilliant in both halfs and should keep his place. Thomas with a quality strike and a few good headers. Those three where stand out for me, no one had a bad game but those three where superb, especially Jaidi.
