Thedelldays Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 If Lambert was in the same side as we had in 02/03 i would say he would get the same amount of goals, at least. now you are embarassing yourself...dont be daft. lambert plays in league 1...does the business in league 1....to suggest he could now score 20+ goals in the prem is an idiotic statement

I don't think i am embarassing myself, IMO beattie is a CCC striker, he is not good enough in the prem, as shown now and in his everton days. I too have met the ***t...but on the pitch he was superb for us... many players are prats in real life...you only have to look at gerrard

Smirking_Saint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 so his stoke and saints days mean nothing then...? lambert is good...but ffs Has he done anything majorly for Stoke ?? In the CCC yes but not really in the prem. Fuller for me looks a better player. Ok, i may be going a bit OTT but i really do put his fantastic season (and it was, i can't take his goals away from him) to the team around him, and many people don't give them enough credit. He would not have got anywhere near that amount next to marian.
deadpanmatt Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 I was hoping for info on how the new strike partnership did in today's game here, but it's all about ormerod and Beattie?!
ringwood Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Sounds like a brand of cigarettes. Would make a great tee shirt tho. Smokin! in the days of Pirate Paul and his stall outside the Dell it almost certainly wouuld be a Tee Shirt by the next game Lambert and Barnard and smokin, good to see a win and humour
Ekelund24 Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 According to most on here it was a miracle that we finished 8th in the league and got to the cup final, considering we had the following "****" players: Ormerod Beattie Delap Oakley Fernandes Lundekvam (only good because of Svensson)

LaptopSaint Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Agreed to an extent, it is hard to make comparisons as they are in different leagues, that being said, beattie was never the handful Lambert is, did not have the free kick and ball striking ability Lambert does and also his first touch and technical ability was woeful. If Lambert was in the same side as we had in 02/03 i would say he would get the same amount of goals, at least. Beatts didnt have a free kick on him? I beg to differ... Cricketphilly Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 brett was a legend. don't be so dismissive Bell end is the term you're looking for I think, but certainly no Saint's legend.
Ekelund24 Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Delap is crap though. He was a very good midfielder that season under Strachan but because he had a bad injury never really recovered and wasn't that good after that, and to be fair was awful when he joined under Gray!! Sanguin Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Barnard looked good today and worked his socks off, I'm sure he and Lambert will do well together. I'm not certain how well he'll do at a higher level, but then you can't really judge from only one game, especially since he's only just signed. I'd rather have splashed out on Simeon Jackson though since I think he would have been more of a threat and would have been able to make more of the headers Lambert wins and knocks on. But now I'm just acting spoilt, since I think we can sign anyone.
St_Tel49 Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Remind you of anyone? One is a big lad who can strike a sweet free-kick, score goals on a regular basis and do a decent job in the air, the other is a smaller lad who doesn't have blistering pace but works his arse off and is a decent finisher. I think these two, when paired together, will be quite similar to Beattie and Ormerod. If memory serves me correctly we did pretty well in 02/03 with those two up top! Looking forward to hopefully seeing them start together today! (apologies if this similarity has been mentioned anywhere before, if so, I missed it!) I did not think that they were reading each other at all today. Hardly surprising since they have only had a day together.
SaintNeil90 Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Has he done anything majorly for Stoke ?? In the CCC yes but not really in the prem. He didn't play for Stoke in the CCC, that was Sheffield United. To be honest I think his transfer fees speak for themselves.
david in sweden Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Hope they are better than that. Ormerod was sh*te. if by that you mean he didn't score very often - then you're right there, but I seem to recall that he had a huge number of "assists" for Beattie (amongst others) ..there's never much credit for that (except in ice-hockey), and you'll be pleased to know that Ormerod is still " shi*e " as you describe him - except that he managed to score Blackpools 90th minute winner yesterday. david in sweden Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 How about the new MacDougall and Boyer ? Mmm, but if you compare them to Lambert & Co....which one would you say was the " tall one " ?
John B Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Delap is crap though. Stoke goal: Incredible start by Stoke, and a very soft goal for Arsenal to concede. Rory Delap's long throw sails over a crowd of player and Ricardo Fuller beats a hesitant Lukasz Fabianski to the ball and stoops to head it into the top corner of the net. The Potters lead, after just 70 seconds.
View From The Top Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Meh, I think Lamberts all round game is better than Beatties was. So do I as it happens. Brett was a cracking wee player who was the perfect foil for Beatts. He worked his socks off, made space for others and pressed high up the pitch, plus there was that goal at Villa Park. Barry the Badger Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 Anybody who thinks that Lambert is even close to the player Beattie was for us is absolutely off their rocker. Don't get me wrong, Lambert is amazing for us in this division, but if we had the 2002/2003 James Beattie in our current team he would be absolutely destroying everybody. Mentalists. NickG Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 you could probably say that about most players who played for us then. different times. Kelvin probably only one who could do job in prem

macthesaint Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Early days, but Barnard did have a hint of Brett about him last night. Willing to run all night, working across the line, hassling defenders and then he missed that sitter. As I say early days but I bet he's kicking himself about that chance.Stick the next one away son. Window Cleaner Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 Meh, I think Lamberts all round game is better than Beatties was. are you sh*tting me? Beattie and Lambert aren't even comparable. Beattie was (is) a Premiership striker who scored a sackful of goals at that level. Lambert has never risen above League

If we had the 2003 Ormerod and Beattie upfront at the moment we would be unstoppable.

But as we're in League 1 and will be for at least another 17 months it's no use even talking about players like (the old model) Beattie. We got Fonte to drop down probably with shedloads of money but also because he wasn't getting any at Crystal Palace.I'm sure he could have got a higher level club if he'd waited but he chose immediate security and a long term sporting project.Other than that we've just signed players from our own level.
