StuRomseySaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Now I no longer work at a gym, I have decided I don't like being fat and am going to do something about it so people dont bully me. What gyms do people reccommend? I have been a member of David Lloyd but have let that lapse. What's Fitness First like? The Quays?
Thedelldays Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 if you are serious....then anyone that offers classes to attend.. doing boxercise etc will be much better than doing your own thing....
GenevaSaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Hampshire Tennis and Health club at west end is nice, but a bit pricey. Classes included in the price and they've just had a refit in the gym with all new equipment. Think single membership is £67. Indoor, Outdoor pool as well. Quays is great value for £37, but does get a bit busy.Mind you, platinum membership allows you to use Bitterne, Weston or the Quays.
Thedelldays Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 a gym with high calibre clunge is also a must
Crab Lungs Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 (edited) De Vere is about 47 quid for a months membership, great gym facilities, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, pool, free fruit, water and of course 'mens health' magazines. And its not full of steroid pumped weirdos who do nothing but look at the mirror and grunt. I recommend it to you highly, Stu. Oh, and I forgot to mention - you can just 'quit' - no commitments whatsoever. (Thanks Wade Garrett for reminding me, but sorry for copying you a little) Edited 22 January, 2010 by Crab Lungs
Wade Garrett Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Would recommend The Quays. Better value than the private gyms, and after an initial 6 month commitment, you only need to give a months notice to quit (at the point typically when you realise you're still paying for it but haven't been for a few months). Lots of the other places are a year's commitment.
sambosa75 Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I used to go to the gym at the Holiday Inn next door to Fleming Park in Eastleigh. That was really good. Nice and quiet, does a few classes and isnt packed to the rafters with 'roided up yetis. Also it's got a pool, steam room, sauna and (best of all) a jacuzzi. saint_stevo Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I second Hampshire Tennis and Health club. New equipment is quality, LCD's on every cardio machine, from cycling to running to x training. Quality stuff. Nice pool and jacuzzi to finish off with Some top notch thigh bacon up there n all. StuRomseySaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Have been a member at David Lloyd previously so might just join back there. They are my 'local' gym and I guess the silent cost of petrol to the Quays might make it not worth it. Hmmmm There used to be some serious WAG filth there too. Rapids is dog sh!te though. Give it to Ron Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Rapids is £33 a month....including pool and health suite...that is when its working. You get 5 one to one sessions with a trainer to set you up with a programme specific for your needs.....fatbusting ? ;-)

The health suite at the Rapids is stoopid, you have to get changed and cross over the other side of the leisure centre. There's also not much clunge at the Rapids, and the clunge that is there, I know, and I dont really want them seeing my mewbs bouncing on a treadmill. In other news, Mountbatten School have got a very tidy little fitness suite for £14 a month.

Actuall you don't now as there is a very small mens changing room in the suite. I have been having a battle with them over this lately ...its broken every 2 weeks as well. All they care about is the gym and half the equipment is old and wonky. Certainly won't be renewing mine when it comes up.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Good shout, I need to get to a gym, my fitness is awful and when it comes to the football I currently consider myself a very lazy striker. Think I can get a free gym membership on the NHS as well
St Marco Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I go to Meon Valley country club (didn't Saints used to go there?). It is a bit pricey but not too bad. The pool is a bit small but everything else is ok. Good bar to go and put the lbs back on after your work out! I do boxing and it helps me for what i do. They also have a golf course, maybe oneday i might actually have a go seeing as never played before!
Golden Balls Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Fitness First just had a big refurb. No pool but if its an actual gym you want then here is best. Unlike most with pools, you won't need to wait for machines. Think its around £30 ish a month. Proper PT's too.

Andy_Porter Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I really need to get into better shape, I play 5-a-side football two-three times a week, was considering joining a gym but I just don't think I'd go enough to warrant spending £30 a week. It's a shame there aren't any gyms where you can just pay per hour without having to sign up for a month or longer at once. Might have to just take up another sport - maybe hockey. You won't get free membership, you will get gp refferal scheme which means you can use the quays or similar at off peak times for a limited amount of time, probably 12 weeks. Suhari Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 If it is fitness and fatloss you want get down to 'Ocean Gym', right next door to FYEO in town. Best cardio workout you will get. Plus, give it a year and you won't be getting bullied.
StuRomseySaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Oh cheers, I guess the quays is the closest council gym in Southampton? Quays, Oaklands, st marys, chamberlain, bitterne. Alot of gyms also let you buy guest passes. La fitness let you buy 10 for £60 for example.

Accolade, which is on the estate on the Bitterne side of northam bridge lets you pay per visit. It's a good independent gym. Just had a refurb of cardio kit and has a really good selection of free weights. It's not a massive place but most of the people are really friendly. All the fitness instructors now their stuff. sotonjoe Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 David Lloyd is the 'best' but be prepared to pay top wack... i.e. about £70 for a singles health and fitness memebership that gives you use of gym and pools. If you want the racquets stuff as well it will be in excess of £80. That's per month by the way.
OLYMPIC Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 Have been a member of David Lloyd's for about 6 years now and have to admit it's the best gym i have used, agree it's a bit pricey but the gym equipment is very new and has the tv screens mounted on a lot of them as well. There is a good range of all sorts of free weights as well as 2 pools, also if you are a member the fitness classes like body combat etc are free.
