eelpie Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Patto is a decent prospect and I reckon he will do well. This move is a good one for him if he gets the games, which he needs. He's leaving on a free, but AP is meeting his commitment to reduce the squad if he buys. I just hope we have a sell-on clause. Good luck, Patto. I will follow your career with interest and I wouldn't mind if some day we bought you back.
SNSUN Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 If anything, this took a bit of gloss of the Barnard transfer. I don't think we have enough strength in depth up front, so while I was happy to hear we'd secured the services of Barnard, despite reading that Leeds had signed him a day or two ago, it's a shame to see him leave. He'll not be a top flight striker, but could make a name for himself at lower levels. Hope the new management don't make the mistakes of managements past and have a sell on clause for him. Good luck Matt.
Under Weststand Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Good Luck matt hope you have a very successful career. A little sad that its a permanent deal, would have preferred it had been a loan. He does however need to get some games under his belt. In the long run it will probably improve his game by playing week in week out.
Sour Mash Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 *You* think *you* could see, whereas clearly plenty of other people disagree. Bearing in mind potential is nigh on impossible to judge to us who only see him in very short spells, and not playing every week. I really wouldn't try to claim that you KNOW he won't make it, because history is littered with examples where managers have got it wrong, let alone fans. You don't rate him, or think he has potential, that's fair enough, but personally, I think to judge him as you have done, at his age, is way too harsh IMO. Only time will tell of course. You're correct, none of us KNOW and history has shown us that players discarded at a young age can go onto great things. However, I've seen Patterson a fair few times and I've never got the impression he'll really make it and if he does, it is still a long way off. Fingers crossed for the lad, but he wasn't going to get a look in with the current quality of our forward line.
.comsaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Good luck son. Always a bit gutting to see a youngster who's come through our youth system move away - especially when they are young, raw & with a lot of potential - ala Paterson. I for one hope he makes the big time & wish him all the very best. Can't believe some of the comments on here. They all start somewhere ffs - and Matt never moaned or whinged - just got on with his football. Cut him some slack. The lad is only 20 ffs! st alex Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I was always impressed with Paterson and thought that given games he would score a few goals, certainly a better prospect than Barnard seemed to be at that age. And since Pato's been here as long as he has, whereas the likes of Andy Carroll who's got a fair few in the league above us this season & Lukas Jutkiewicz who's Motherwell's top scoreer, he must have had something. I'm a little disapointed, as for me success would always be much sweeter if it were through producing our own players than by buying everyone else's readymade ones. RonManager Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Farewell, Symmetrically, doubtless you will score the last goal of the season against us at SMS in the regular season's final home match. unfortunately, Southend will be 6-0 down by then. david in sweden Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 I think it was a mistake to let Paterson go. Lets hope it was just on loan to get some first team experience. He has the potential to be a good striker - just needs the playing time and to develop - and the coaching. Overall I think will regret letting him leave in the long run. And he really wanted to play for Saints! He is a promising lad, but he can't cut it with AP just now. With Connolly injured, we don't have any real cover up front, and MP hardly ever rated a regular spot on the bench. We are buying BIG now and we can't keep them all and hope they might make it one day. WE need goal scorers up front ASAP. Lambert has done a great job so far, but he can't manage 60 games this season. Good job Barnard has come to relieve the pressure. Which reminds me that Mike Williamson is on the move again from Pomp*y. He first came to us as a 16 year old from Torquay and was... loaned out, and loaned out, and ..there was a whole generation of Saints managers who never knew he existed. Good luck to both of them ..except against us, of course.

Ricky Lambert David Connolly Lee Barnard Marek Saganowski Chuck in Adam Lallana and Papa Waigo, and I think we have an abundance of depth up front. Marek clearly doesn't want to be here and Lallana and Waigo aren't really out and out forwards. I'm personally sad to Paterson go and wish him all the best for the future. Waigo I disagree with you; he seems very much a front line striker. We certainly signed him as a striker / winger. His inability to understand the offside rule obviously counted against him... Lallana's natural position seems to be behind a main striker I'd agree, but he's still a backup option for up front. I believe Pearson played him up front when he was here. Saga may not want to be here but he's still an option we have to turn to. Patterson is clearly not deemed good enough for us by Pardew, so it's in the best interests of both parties that he moves on. He's not been played a center forward though, which is what I was getting at with my original post. True, Lallana has been used as a backup option, but I'd much rather have him playing in his natural position where he has been more effective. In my opinion I'd rather have someone giving 100% for the team week in week out over Saga, which is so frustrating as he still potentially has a lot to offer. I think we agree; I'm not saying that these are our first team options. The original post, not by you, was that we now lack depth up front with Pogo leaving. My point was that, with all of those options to us, we really don't.
Ewell Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Personally I think this is an error as every time I have seen the lad (apart from two games) he has looked decent. Giving him away for free is absolute madness in my book. Even if it is part of the Barnard deal it is only going to be £50k. Far too low in my book. I suppose Pardew sees him every day so knows better than I, but I just wonder if having to play against Jardi in training every day has made him look bad. I wonder what other players Pardew has let go during his management career. Perhaps its not long enough to really see if he discarded a few gems. best of luck to the lad. I'll be following his progress and comparing it closely with Barnard who I know nothing about. I agree we should have just loaned him out this season and possibly next. I really think this one will come back to bite us on the arse!
macthesaint Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Good luck to Matt, will look out for his progress. I personally think Colchester at home was a key game for him. He missed 3 chances in the first half and I think AP subbed him after. Seem to remember AP commenting on the need for a finisher after that game and it kind of signalled the end for Matt.Hope he does well at Southend. That game and also Yeovil where he choked a sitter in the first minute and struggled for the rest of the game. I hope he does well at Southend who are a good club and may still come good. Sadly, a whole batch of young careers were damaged by being at a circus last season and I hope Pato turns out to be one recovers from it. Hopefully if he is a Saints fan he won't hold it against the club. Turning down loan moves previously may not have been so smart though.

St_Tel49 Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 He is never going to make it, one of our worst academy prospects and thank god we got rid of him. If only we had kept some more of the decent ones. I really don't understand why all of you love him and saw any potential, he was slow, weak and didn't have a lot of skill............yeah great potential! greg_hill Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 If pointing out the weakness in your aguement is being silly then yes I'm being silly. I repeat, professional football managers make mistakes allt he time with players and this `could' be another. Yes you are being silly because nobody said football managers were perfect. They make mistakes like anyone else but the reason they are employed is because they make fewer mistakes than the layman. You really think that Pards has worse judgment of players than you? Why not apply for the Saints job then? As for our departee, I wish him all the best. Played few games but always gave 100%.

''Paterson - 4 - I hope this is purely him not gelling or not being suited to the 4-5-1 formation, should of scored that complete sitter. I actually wasn't even sure if he was playing from time to time. I will give him the benefit of doubt with this being his first game. But I also blame Tilson for not giving him a strike partner.'' Chez Posted 23 January, 2010 Share Posted 23 January, 2010 by contrast Barnard's performance was equally unimpressive. His only chance in the first half saw him fail to control a ball well enough to keep it down to enable him an easier shot. He did get his shot in but it was powder puff and straight at the keeper. He looked classier than Paterson, but certainly not more effective IMO. Mind you Ipswich defenders are a lot tougher than Wymcobe's. It matters not. Barnard's our man now and the guy at Southend is nobody.
