Announced last week to be built on the old Chantry Hall (Jesters) site.

Just read about this and the development of the Chantry Hall site a bit more:

There was a fire on the site prior to development. That does seem a remarkable stroke of bad luck.

Actually I recall walking past there on the opening of St Marys and being intrigued by the Southampton crest as seen from a distance in the photos.Great shame that building could not have been preserved.

But I'm all for an ice rink again.

much like the mysterious fires at The Lamp And Mantle and The Sportsman pubs (all prior to their being torn down and replaced with flats!!) :-k

The developers, Warburg Properties, were originally intending to build a small supermarket (Co-op were lined up to take it on), with offices above & 2 stories (I think) of flats above that. This was going to be on the site between The Chantry Hall & Central Hall (take a look on Google Earth its shows the site cleared with Chantry Hall still there). There was a lot of problems with consultants not being paid and architectural issues and the plug was pulled.

For the first time ever I am ITK.

Now my own personal opinion, based on nothing at all, is that the Ice Rink is a smoke screen. I think the developers are hoping & expecting that it will never to get planning permission, after all it's not the best place for it. They will then have the opportunity to say ‘well we tried’ and press ahead with building flats on, what is now a far larger and more accessible site, giving a better & quicker return for their money.

I used to watch The Vikings play ice-hockey on saturday nights and I hope this goes through.

The design for it looks fairly good, a practical and compact building maintaininfg street level intimacy through shop units, decent sized spectators seating and a good looking building as well.

I wonder if this would conflict at all with the indoor skiing centre that the council have planned which would be just a stones trow away, could benefit from each other.

There's housing and apartments planned to be built just down the road, not sure if they are being built, or are built. Anyone know why the existing development next to this (and by the st marys bussiness/industrial estate) is so low rise, it seems the ideal area for high rise deveolopment, prehaps so as not to block views of st marys spire?
