Barnard off to Saints

Morning all, Southend fan here.

A little bit of information on Barnard. He was a very promising youngster at Spurs, but has always been unlucky with injuries. It is fair to say that it is only this season where he has spent a substantial amount of time being injury free, and we've reaped the rewards for it. He has an excellent scoring record for us, even when being in and out of fitness, and is a natural finisher. I think his career will be limited due to his lacking of any great aerial presence, pace and power, but his movement is excellent and takes most chances he gets his way.

Let's remember Southend this season haven't created many chances, and without him we would be buggered. I do hope that what you all say about Patterson is true, as we need somebody to fill the void left by Barney very quickly.

Anyway, take good care of him. He's a hard worker and I expect him and Lambert will be a fantastic partnership. It won't take you long to get promoted with them two up front.

See you all at the end of the season (again!). I wonder if it'll be a similar scenario to last time...

Southend fans... they're a decent bunch :smt023

Paterson is a shy lad and a forced move out of his comfort zone is just what is required.

Would have preferred a loan period as I think we might regret letting him go in a few years.

Still if Barnard keeps relatively injury free this is a good deal for Saints in the short term.

we won't hear nothing until after training and I bet you a tenner that the officail website will show a photo of him training.

I'm stranded at Colbury but i'm pondering over a trip to staplewood.

I know there was a meeting at SMS yesterday with staff chaired by NC he left the meeting to take a phone call and came back into the meeting and said that we are about to sign a player. I work with the Father in Law of a member of staff who was at the meeting.

I agree, but then if he did turn down a loan offer (as rumoured), then we don't really have any options. Just hope we are negotiating a clause giving us a large percentage of future transfers...

Doesn't really fit in with recent NC's actions

Good move all round I feel. I dont think Patterson is ever going to realistically get a look in as his development is always likely to be a couple of steps behind the development of the club under NC & ML. That said, he's a good honest player and should carve out a good career for himself with Southend. They are obviously a pretty good club who have given Barnard a platform to prove himself as they did with Freddie Eastwood to win a big move away a few seasons ago. Hopefully the same can happen for Paterson.

Good luck to Matt and welcome to Barnard if this comes off!

Got to say i agree with this. We want to be in the Premier League in 5 years apparently but we all know they want it quicker. So i ask myself is Paterson going to be a Premier League striker in 4 years? And the answer has to be no. I like him a lot but just not sure it fits in with where we're looking to go. The only reason we look at losing players like Matt Mills, Martin Crainie, Best, Blackstock, etc. as a bad thing is because our expectations had dropped so much. If we were still midtable in the Premier League it wouldn't be seen as any great loss quite frankly.

Never forget we had to sell most of those guys to stay afloat not because we didn't want them. Even Drew Surman had to leave very much against his will. In my view there would be no harm done at all in welcoming back a few of them, as products of the Academy and with a few years experience at other clubs behind them they could be well motivated to help take their alma mater club to higher levels.

Agree. Think Best and Blackstock would look completely lost in the Premiership. Honestly believe Lambert is better than either ever will be. But I think both Mills and Crainie could easily have a roll to play for a mid-table premier club, and would love to have them back...

My point is those players are not really Premier League standard. They are good Championship players. As is Drew if you really think about it.

Got a lot of love for Southend fans, looking forward to the last game of the season!

Without ANY DOUBT AT ALL the best fans I have seen at St Marys.

The atmosphere in the away end in 2007 was nothing short of phenomenal, I would have happily joined the back of one of those conger lines :-)

Attracting some of the ex-youth team back would help us meet the home grown players rule too.

Agree about Mills, but for me Crainie has found his level. Seen him a few times for Cov this season and he has been at fault for a few of the goals they conceded

I hope we go for a percentage of any sell-on fee for Patterson, if the deal happens. The club's certainly made a few mistakes over the last few years in letting players go that are now still playing in the Premiership or Championship.

A first option buy back clause would be good

Please no! It's got to be two strikers, especially if we're looking at having the 'creativity' of potentially Wotton and James in centre midfield! Waigo or Connolly has to play for me. Hopefully this deal comes through in time.

No it must be 4-5-1. Ipswich are strong in midfield.

We will do very well to beat them with the players we have available.

I expect a fixture reducing defeat

Perfectly valid argument, but personally I think there is a slim chance that Patterson will make it that high .. admittedly maybe only a 1 in 20 chance, but a chance.

To put that in perspective, I never thought that highly of Cranie, Blackstock or Best who are already better than I thought they'd get! Mills I did rate.

K.

It would not surprise me for Southend fans to come back on here, quoting they had robbed us. Paterson will be a really good player, but our needs are immediate. Given the opportunity it would not surprise me for him to hit the ground running. We have what we want from this and Southend have a very good deal, best of luck to all.
