teamsaint Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Would be a little disapointed if we got rid of Paterson to bring in Barnard, as I always thought he looked alright and would develop into a useful player, although if Pardew's not going to play him then he may as well go. But could become a reversal of the Davis - Beattie deal, where they end up with a top player as Barnard falls into the reserves. I think Patto will end up being at least a decent CCC striker. Hope we only loan him out.

Pardew clearly doesn't rate him and his comments about wanting a striker that he can play to rest Lambert says everything. For me Patterson is the ideal understudy to Lambert and given a run would be a great asset. I think I'm resigned to the fact that he is out of here. Mr Saints Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Just rehashing some old news from this week. basically we've made an improved offer today, which has been accepted. leeds have had one too, but he rejected them. if this doesn't go completely and utterly tits up, we'll see it on the OS tomorrow. Source? Or is it a prediction gathered from the various articles and links today?
patred44 Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Local radio up here have just said Barnard is a Saints player...and would be joining his new club tomorrow in time for the FA Cup game against Ipswich Town. no other details, nothing about Patterson going the other way. Colinjb Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 (edited) Thank you for providing a potted history of each of the players mentioned, I am so thankful to learn such information. Doesn't change what I said in response to your original groundless remark, money talks and players (most) will go where the money is. If Mr Scotland is different then good luck to him, but I bet if we offered him the right deal he would be tempted. Wigan don't pay big money, I agree we probably wouldn't land Gerrard (well Steven anyway) but there are run of the mill prem players who would still be prepared to drop down to further their careers. And who's to say we will not be only one level down within 5 months? No need to patronise me, I was trying to offer some reasoning behind my statement and as such it is in no way groundless. Wigan may not pay the biggest dollar but they have attracted some good players into there over the past few years, and they will have done that by doing what the Skates have done, spending comparitively large amounts on wages. Scotland has a close relationship with his manager and is playing regularly for a mid table premiership side. Considering his clubs stature and league position it would take a many million pound offer to get them to allow us to discuss terms, even though we have money we are not going to be stupid with it and paying upwards of 3 million pounds for a player while we are in the third tier is entirely unrealistic. I firmly believe he will not sign for us as a result. If I am wrong, I will be wrong but there is no need to respond with that level of sarcasm. patred44 Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 10.30 local radio did not expand on their earlier previous announcement.. If this is true it casts serious doubts on any further interest in Simeon Jackson IMO By Tuesday I expect a 'significant' signing of a midfielder and the news that two of our players will move on. Danns, Owen Garvan or Stock, I would consider as significant for our needs
Andy_Porter Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 I mentioned Owen Garvan a while ago when he was out of favour at Ipswich, would be a fantastic signing. My Ipswich supporting friend seems to think he's back in Keane's plans again and won't be moving. From the three you mention Garvan and Danns would be far better options for us, not really so keen on Stock.

TopGun Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 (edited) I think Patto will end up being at least a decent CCC striker. Hope we only loan him out. Agreed. Nobody appeared to rate Kenwyn Jones that much as he was played in defence and up front and seemed a load of uncoordinated limbs at times, yet that young man now seems to be wanted by Liverpool for multi bucks. Much the same with Scott McDonald who is now Celtic's main striker. They all start somewhere and need time. doggface Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Paterson was at Southend yesterday finalising the move. I would have ideally liked to see him go out on loan in this league to see whether he could cut it here. There was talk he did not want to go out on loan, if this is true then I think he has been a silly boy and screwed up his chances with us. I think Barnard will prove a good buy and I also think southend have a pretty good deal too if it is finalised this morning.
northam soul Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Surely though we will not just alternate Lambert and Barnard. I feel if we get a decent ball playing centre midfield we should be looking to play 2 up front as recently we have not been as free scoring in games. Lambert has been far too isolated and IMO just needs some help not just being replaced.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 SAINTS are hoping to tie up a deal for Southend striker Lee Barnard today – with Matt Paterson moving in the opposite direction. The Daily Echo understands the Shrimpers have accepted a £175,000 bid for the 25-year-old, who has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season. As part of the transfer, academy product Paterson is set to move to Roots Hall. This could be the deal of the decade!!

I know very little about Barnard other than he's scored goals this season, but not really in previous seasons , and he is 25. Sounds like a good signing for the short to mid- term. Patterson on the other could just, maybe, perhaps, with a following wind, really be the deal of the decade for southend. k.

Lambert has been far too isolated and IMO just needs some help not just being replaced. It will give AP the opportunity to mix and match and rest RL every so often. Lambert will still be first choice CF but he will sometimes play in partnership with Barnard, sometimes with Connolly, sometimes with Waigo and sometimes up front on his own. Likewise, if AP feels he needs to rest RL or if he gets injured or suspended (with 2 matches per week for pretty much the remainder of the season), Barnard can play upfront with Connolly or Waigo or as a lone striker. benjamsandwich28 Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 The majority of me is thinking this is a cracking signing but must admit to a little apprehension on the Paterson part of the deal like a few others on here. Although he is a 'reserve' player, when he's come off the bench he's looked a real handful, not afraid to run at a defender to make space for the shot, something we lack up front IMO. Maybe it's just that he's young and is putting in a bit more effort to prove himself but I think he has something to offer to us as a fringe player, if not this season, next. Hopefully it's just be a loan move... However, massively happy with the Barnard part of the deal. Our strike force will be formiddable!
sambosa75 Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Good move all round I feel. I dont think Patterson is ever going to realistically get a look in as his development is always likely to be a couple of steps behind the development of the club under NC & ML. That said, he's a good honest player and should carve out a good career for himself with Southend. They are obviously a pretty good club who have given Barnard a platform to prove himself as they did with Freddie Eastwood to win a big move away a few seasons ago. Hopefully the same can happen for Paterson. Good luck to Matt and welcome to Barnard if this comes off!
saints-cris Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 This will be a very good deal if it happens, we get a player who has scored one of the most in the league in an average side and who other clubs are clearly interested in. He's clearly got something about him! Shame for Paterson, I think he could have come good, but the only way he was going to do that here was to have a loan for a good amount of time, hes not gunna get infront of Lambert and Connelly.. so I guess its best he moves on for his sake. 175 + Paterson is cracking business for a goalscorer, considering Ricky cost us £1mil. Plus the fact that were getting a real English spine to our side is something I really like.
Kingsland Red Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Not unduly worried about Paterson. Good to be a club that lives in the 'now' rather than continuously developing for the future and then the future falling around us.
instinct Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 We have to trust Pardews judgement on letting Paterson go, seeing as he watches him in training every day and most of us have only seen a couple of subs appearances. Is always a shame to let a youth player go though, often I wish we'd kept Blackstock, Best, Dyer and Ranger a while longer.
Museshrimper Posted 22 January, 2010 Share Posted 22 January, 2010 Morning all, Southend fan here. A little bit of information on Barnard. He was a very promising youngster at Spurs, but has always been unlucky with injuries. It is fair to say that it is only this season where he has spent a substantial amount of time being injury free, and we've reaped the rewards for it. He has an excellent scoring record for us, even when being in and out of fitness, and is a natural finisher. I think his career will be limited due to his lacking of any great aerial presence, pace and power, but his movement is excellent and takes most chances he gets his way. Let's remember Southend this season haven't created many chances, and without him we would be buggered. I do hope that what you all say about Patterson is true, as we need somebody to fill the void left by Barney very quickly. Anyway, take good care of him. He's a hard worker and I expect him and Lambert will be a fantastic partnership. It won't take you long to get promoted with them two up front. See you all at the end of the season (again!). I wonder if it'll be a similar scenario to last time...
