Please educate the ignorant. What type of player is he? What are his core attributes? Big, small pacey, skilful, good finisher? Who is he similar too?

Any info appreciated!

where are all those Southend fans from the play-off season when you need them?

If he is a Lambert type player (and I don't know), that's a bit worrying. Is he seen as back-up for Lambert or as a replacement? Or is AP planning to pair them up?

Yes. ;)

Sounds great; seems to be a striker in between the attributes of Lambert and Connolly. Gives us some real options up front now, and should take a bit of the burden away from Lambert. And for £200,000 (plus Pogo I guess), he's pretty cheap.

Not cup tied as well so if we can get him in tomorrow would be a bonus.

All we would need now imo is a proven attacking midfielder who can create stuff from the centre of the pitch. Then i think we would be well on our way to a very good team.

Someone has posted on the comments at the bottom of that top link that we interested in Jason Scotland of Wigan

He's a good player at this level. I think he's been a bit unlucky in the Premiership.

Did he used to play at Swansea?

He wouldn't.

Why not? Connolly has, and David Healy is reportedly keen to rejoin Leeds. If the money is reasonable many players will play at whatever level that money takes them, and many see Saints (or Leeds) as a decent place to go at present. Ask Fonte about dropping down as well, doesn't seem to have any qualms about it.

Connolly was released through injury and despite the success of the signing it was a gamble at the time.

Healy isn't getting a game at Sunderland and would be rejoining a former club who will only be one league down from his former level within 5 months.

Fonte was sold by a club desperate for cash who are only one league above us and seemingly going nowhere.

Scotland is playing regularly for Wigan in the Premiership, has only just joined them and is working hard to succeed there on no doubt very high wages. He is also working for a manager who has mentored him up from the level we are currently at. We wouldn't be able to offer him more money or more prestige. It wouldn't make sense for him to drop down.

Another discussion on the same Southend website I posted earlier, which seems to indicate he's on his way to us.

Some mixed emotions on there - very understandable IMHO. But they seem very resigned to the fact he's going. I'm seriously hoping that Patterson is only going on loan there - think we'll be shooting ourselves in the foot if we let him go permanently - lets be honest, how long has Connolly got left? Probably the amount of time it would take to get rid of Patterson's rough edges.

Agreed. Think he could be a good player for us, if given the opportunity. A loan, where he gets regular games, is what he needs right now.

Yup happy with a loan but permanent..........

I think he could become a good player but it depends on whether AP sees him ever being an 'above L1 level' player? We are buying players for this league, the one above and some possibly even higher. The question is, will Pato be good enough for that journey?

If this is not official why is there yet another thread on this.

Oh and BTW if he does sign remember Tic Tacs broke this first;)

Sky Sports news are running 2 lines at the bottom of the screen saying that it is being denied that a deal has been done for Barnard, without mentioning Saints. Probably means something will happen soon then :)

Thank you for providing a potted history of each of the players mentioned, I am so thankful to learn such information. Doesn't change what I said in response to your original groundless remark, money talks and players (most) will go where the money is. If Mr Scotland is different then good luck to him, but I bet if we offered him the right deal he would be tempted. Wigan don't pay big money, I agree we probably wouldn't land Gerrard (well Steven anyway) but there are run of the mill prem players who would still be prepared to drop down to further their careers. And who's to say we will not be only one level down within 5 months?

Just rehashing some old news from this week.

basically we've made an improved offer today, which has been accepted.

leeds have had one too, but he rejected them.

if this doesn't go completely and utterly tits up, we'll see it on the OS tomorrow.

There was a rumour last week that pongo was going out on loan till end of season. Could this be the connection?

Would be a little disapointed if we got rid of Paterson to bring in Barnard, as I always thought he looked alright and would develop into a useful player, although if Pardew's not going to play him then he may as well go. But could become a reversal of the Davis - Beattie deal, where they end up with a top player as Barnard falls into the reserves.
