Dons 0-1 Saints - Reaction

Fecking hell the negativity in here is unbelievable!

I personally felt our support was quality, it was not helped by the fact we were technically singing to ourselves but we were deffinatly loud. After watching the highlights you can hear it even on the tv. Even the commentators comment how fantastic we were. Some people just need to stop pressing the "post reply" button when they are in a **** mood.

sorry but I disagree. It wasnt great but it was not as bad as you make out. It may well have been where you were stood, but that was not the case elsewhere. The 2nd half behind the goal was pretty decent throughout - yes it did increase after we were down to 10 men, but it was not bad before.

I agree that I wish more would sing. I wish more would keep it up. I wonder why people go to away games, knowing they will be standing with lots of people who sing, and then keep quiet. I even saw a couple in front of me (wearing Saints stuff) who barely even moved when we scored...

cheers

I was stood next to the loudest person in the ground, as most of the people in the back half of the left corner will attest. And it was not by any stretch of the imagination "loud" elsewhere for most of the second half.

The strangest thing about that ground was how well it magnified sound. The home fans started maybe 3 songs all match but they carried very well considering how little activity there was amongst their fans, though they did sound like they were coming from somewhere near McDonalds behind us. I was only half-joking when I suggested they were piping in crowd noise from the speakers, I wouldn't put it past them.

Every time he's played at right back this season he has done well - much much better than Lloyd James there.

Been saying this for months. Including in last weekend's team thread, when met with the comment "Thomas ? We want to WIN this game you know..."

Having said that, when they broke against us and we backed off he was too central and the left sided attacker was given too much room to put the ball across, and the one that hit the post also came from Thomas' side - but generally I thought he did very well.

''Tonight showed the difference in quality in this league this season. We came up against no teams built like that last season. Even with the 10 points back Saints would be level with us, so arguably we should be well-matched, but that was a team built for a higher level, where physique and strength are a pre-requisite. That's not a dig at Saints, they could play a bit too, but it was easy pickings for them defensively and they could always unsettle us with physical presence in the midfield.

It was the size of the whole team that was most alarming. We were up against a left flank of bodybuilders, and of the rest, most of them were 6'+ and 13 stone. We just don't have those sort of players available to us as first teamers (Jude & Seano being the exceptions) at the moment. RDM identified this last season and brought in Jabo for nights like this. Incey will probably come to a similar conclusion in the Summer

Anyway, it'll be interesting if we can get the first goal down there, as our game is all about pace on the break and it may prove to be the key factor yet, but I'm travelling more in hope than expectation.''

Nice MK "fan" quote, but given that they basically kicked the sh111t out of us for the first 15 minutes they've got a cheek complaining about us being "physical".

Oh, and I thought that Fonte was, um, not a ball playing defender, anyway. Wayne Thomas showed more finesse.

And Stevo, no, Antonio is good enough for us at the moment, his crossing was very hit and miss, and he should have done something when he got into the box early on and Lallana was unmarked, but he (again) murdered them down their left and was always an outlet for our mostly ugly sometimes long ball football. What he can't do is defend, and I was saying Waigo should have come on about 5 minutes before he did, as Antonio was caught in two minds about closing down or tracking the runner a couple of times with 10 men - Waigo's no Nemanja Vidic but he usually gets back and knows what's expected of him.

It mentioned in The Sun today that there was a pitch invasion at the end.

Please tell me that this wasn't the case, I cringed when I read it.

The two usual suspects from the previous round plus about 20 or 30 complete knobs ranging between 10 and 15 years of age who just meandered around grinning stupidly. There were also a few older *****s who just proved that frontal lobe lobotomies are still prevalent.

Did eh manage to put a cross on anyone's head all game?

Serious question

Yes - and near the end actually played a beautifully weighted diagonal high(ish) ball to somebody to set up a chance. Think it was Lambert. That is the pass that got Birtles and co. singing his praises.

If i remember that beautiful cross ball pass the released the striker was james.

Antonio offered a lot of ambition and is as always full of running, that will allways worry defenders.

However, he came across one of the worst LB's in the league, his crossing was very poor, he has no skill on the ball and often struggles to even control it.

He won't be the same player saturday.

The one that had Birtles and co swooning was defo Antonio on about 80 mins. "Beautiful ball to feet from Antonio" or words to that effect. Saw it live and on TV later.

I remember the commentary you are talking about, and can also remember thinking "what is this commentator on about" because it was NOT Antonio.

without trawling through all the posts, I must say how impressed I was with Thomas last night, saved our skins a couple of times with great last ditch tackles.

I can see why Pardew persists with Antonio. Although he is erratic, his strength, pace and confidence adds another element to our threat. In the first 30 minutes before he tired a bit, he was a serious thorn in the side of MK.

Great atmosphere as well. I took my Man U supporting mate with me and now he admitted he wouldn't mind being a Saints fan because our fans are electric!

until antonio scored..he looked like a novice who blagged his way into the team....after he scored..he looked very good..

The thing I like about Antonio is that he clearly cares about his football alot more than the majority of his players.

When he gets a chance and doesn't score you can tell he's upset with himself, some of our players in the past have given the impression they couldnt give a **** - Dyer, McGoldrick, Best etc

I'd like to see us play both Antonio and Waigo together, either both on the wings or one upfront. Waigo just needs a run of games imo.

agree mate

you can clearly see why pardew likes him...energy and pace to burn...works his bloody socks off and is a raw talent..

if the coaching staff can do some work with him..he could be a very good player in league 1/CCC

I would assume we will sign him for free at the end of the season...worth a punt if you ask me

:) - quite right. I was being rather rude about him for wasting two excellent early opportunites then he goes and smashes it in the far corner and has a great game overall!

Dunno why you'd narrow it down to crosses onto people's heads when he was effective in many other ways, but yes, I should think so, and he was also the only person on the pitch who scored, if you want to broaden the debate to "where's his end product ?".

I'd say he looked like a genuine threat until he scored (albeit with some strange decisions and indecisions, and a couple of useless crosses), but after the goal he went a bit quiet, at least in terms of getting into dangerous positions and beating his man. He nevertheless spent a good 20 minutes slaughtering Lewington (their captain) from every attack, just as he did at St Mary's in the second half when we stuffed them in the League.

I like antonio as a player..really honest and you can clearly see that he gives his all...hopefully his raw talent will be polished a bit and he can be really good
