Ken Tone Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Ref was indeed poor, and Gleeson should have been at least booked for attack on James that got James booked. Is the JPT like some other competitions so that we have to have the same ref for the second leg? K.

NickG Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Good result - would have happily taken 0-0 back to St Marys. Good performance. First sight of Fonte - looked excellent. Thought Schneiderlin played very well. Good goal. Very poor ref. Players got too heated - but after last few years we should not be complaining about passion even if misplaced! Sending off harsh -2 yellows would have been fair - he was grabbed and shoved him away.

rooney Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Thoroughly enjoyed that and AP's tactics were spot on. An excellent Team display and impressed with Fonte. Antonio was MOM for me but Rickies first touch and knock downs are a joy to watch even when he does not score. Well done Fans for making so much noise and getting behind the team in that empty Stadium.

corky morris Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Saints were professional if not unspectacular. Morgan was playing very well, but the 2 who stoof out for me were Wotton & Thomas. Both showed experience when required. James did well playing alongside Morgan & Wotton. Also worth mentioning Mills who was subbed as a sub last game. He did the defensive work very well. Did not bomb forward like Harding, but a good performance. Ref was shocking! Thomas gets studded on the chest - no booking, we point a finger - yellow card. MK are a typical Ince team - they do have some quality, but you just dont like them. Gleeson is a prize **** as well.
The9 Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 We do seem to be playing a lot more hoofball than we were earlier in the season, not sure this is the way to go. This. I went, I have to say I was utterly bored out of my skin in the main. No atmosphere from them, barely any from us after the bloke I was with stopped singing after about 20 minutes until the sending off, the uninspired "yellows" stuff was tedious as hell, and the whole thing was basically crushingly boring and MK-style soulless. Still, we won, a means to an end.
st alex Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Dont think its worth the risk Alpine, Just disappointing that he got a red but Gleeson who had him around the throat just got a yellow It was also Gleeson, i think, who started the pushing on James in the first half scuffle, but wasn't even booked, yet when MS did more or less the same thing towards the end, after a great deal more provocation, he was sent off. Kelv and James got booked for the scuffle (and NONE of their players - except the one who made the initial challenge from behind), even though James didn't push anyone (just finger waving), and Kelv was booked for pushing Gleeson off him. I wouldn't complain about the cards if the ref used the same standards for both teams. In a normal match Gleeson should have had 2 yellows, but by yesterday's standards 2 reds would have been more appropriate.

You're not looking in the right threads on here then either. Last season's Southern Area Final finished 0-0 and 1-1 and went straight to penalties at the end of the 90 minutes of the second leg without away goals factoring into the equation at all. It was no coincidence that we spent most of last night casually ambling around subtly timewasting as we had no reason to have the ball on the pitch at 1-0 up and away from home. Bonus points to Antonio for the genius "cramp" injury with 1 minute of added time left, wasted 45 seconds (including the sub) and the ref only added 30. About bloody time we did it to someone else. (oh and I don't think the tackle was a yellow card offence). This moment grates on me the more I watch it. 1) That gleeson guy is a right ugly, agressive mong (just gotta get that out there). 2) Schneiderlin went over to apologise 3) Gleeson grabbed his shirt in such a way that the ref wouldnt be able to see, so the ref only saw them squaring up then Schneiderlin go for his face. 4) the look on wottons face in the background when Schneiderlin puts his hands on Gleeson says it all. Schneiderlin should also have known exactly what that would result in. 5) I think he will be missed as showed moments of class in the game (Bring on those who dont agree). The9 Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 5) I think he will be missed as showed moments of class in the game (Bring on those who dont agree). Actually, he did a no-look pass down the left wing Ronaldinho style at one point that I thought was awesome. God knows how I could see it from the other end of the ground, but he did seem to make a point of deliberately looking the other way as he did it, made me laugh. If this was an innocent little kid who just gets a little overexcited by his favourite football team then i could appreciate it once or twice at most. But in actuall fact it is a bunch of gobby agressive brats with parents who have no idea about parenting or what is acceptable at a football match (or just dont care) In either case it shouldnt be allowed and should result in banning as others will only copy this and it has a knock on affect in other areas. i.e affecting players when they are trying to take penalties (Norwhich game) or p!ssing the opposition off by celebrating when we've only won first leg... Its been covered a fair few times before, but when we have a large away following (so, most of the time) and we are spread out over a stand, or a stand and a half, the coordination of singing breaks down and you have groups singing different songs, or some quiet while others are screaming their heads off. In the 1st half there was a decent amount of singing, but the rows around me were quiet and not joining in. I moved behind the goal in the 2nd and it was much better. Plenty of singing, lots of different stuff, good banter and I have never cheered a throw-in so much in my life as when the ref finally gave a decision our way with 2 mins to go..... (ok thats not so bad ) It was the same kid at Northampton, the same kid who interrupted the penalties v Norwich, and I'd seen him do it at least once prior to that too. What happened last night was he did it, got on, and that put the idea into the heads of a bunch of thickoes to get on the pitch. There was also a swell of yobs trying to get on just to the left of the goal, just to p1ss off the stewards, and it was mostly them who ended up going on. All credit to Wayne Thomas, he indulged the kid and then told the rest of them to get off. It basically ruined the chance to show our appreciation for the result, as any applauding of the team was interspersed with the need to boo the nobbers to show we aren't all planks like those few. Hopefully the brown/gingerish bloke in the brown jacket gets banned, as he jumped the barrier just in order to swing a few punches at a steward who until then was 5 yards away on the edge of the pitch and just doing his job. A couple of police with a couple of cameras got some good footage, and the guy in the brown jacket was very distinctive.

Smirking_Saint Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Antonio was ok tonight, he is still very very raw. Don't get me wrong, the boy is quick but i don't think he is quicker than papa who IMO is the more talented player. His pace did have the MKD back line crapping it's pants every time we had the ball though, which is a good thing. But the only way for him to become really threatening is if he becomes more dangerous with what he does with it. Great goal, but some woeful crossing, i can see stevo's point he is making, but he did cause problems for MKD. Disapointed james hasn't got more of a mention, thought he did really well in midfield last night, passes the ball well, looked lively and had some good efforts, that left footed shot at the end was quality. I don't understand what he has to do, if he does anything wrong everyone jumps on him, but he has a good game and people ignore it. I think he has a future. Lambert played well again, i think if he gets injured we are in the poo, same with Lallana (see my summary of him in the lallana thread). Lambert however doesn't win THAT many headers, it just appears he does as he causes such a nuissance the ball drops down all around him. Unfortunately i think we will have to put up with the long ball, but tbf, it is a decent 2nd dimension for us to use. Fonte - Real class at the back, looks calm and composed, definately better than this league.

Couple of renditions of "we're by far the greatest team" was probably the loudest it got, as well as giving the ref abuse (which he deserved). I went to the game and then watched a recording of the match after getting home. Heard f**k all at the ground but picked them q.clearly up on TV. Playing in a massive, unfinished stadiium can't help - like giving somebody who's just got his license a powerful motor. They just can't handle it. Our support wasn't fantastic - partly the lack of banter (the Schneiderlin sending off at least provoked some of us into life) but me personally it was the JPT and there's another leg to go. Chez Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 I have to say I thought we were good for the win and there were one or to real positives to take away from the game notably Antonio's and Fonte's performance. Antonio has been derided on here in recent weeks and last night he showed again (after the Millwall cameo) what an asset he can be given the space to operate. Yes his first touch is eratic and yes the final ball might not alway bwe top notch, but isn't it wonderful to see a pacey powerful runner go at the oposition and have the confidence to try to beat the man? Fonte's showing was similar to Saturday. He looks a terrific signing. Overconfidence and overplaying can be his only downfall, but boy is it refreshing to see someone get the bal down and play. Can he please teach Wotton to do it at least once a game. Davis 7 great to have him back. We just look safer. One decent save. Thomas 8 he just looks better at right back to me Fonte 9 top display again. Hope this is is level for the rest of the season Perry 7 little too much hoof for my liking, but did enough. Jardi back please. Mills 7 felt like a debut really as he has only really played at left midfield this season. He looked much more comfortable. Great cover for Harding. Antonio 8 ran and ran and casused and prevented problems. Wotton 3 hoof, hoof, panic, hoof. James 7 best showing for a while. He's improving as a player all the time. Schneiderlin 7 worked hard and seemed to enjoy playign a little further forward Lallan 5 ran up too many bling alleys Lambert 6 great work for the goal but too much hoof bal left him a little starved of supply

It wasnt great but it was not as bad as you make out. It may well have been where you were stood, but that was not the case elsewhere. The 2nd half behind the goal was pretty decent throughout - yes it did increase after we were down to 10 men, but it was not bad before. I agree that I wish more would sing. I wish more would keep it up. I wonder why people go to away games, knowing they will be standing with lots of people who sing, and then keep quiet. I even saw a couple in front of me (wearing Saints stuff) who barely even moved when we scored... cheers
Jez Posted 21 January, 2010 Share Posted 21 January, 2010 Did anyone else notice Antonio's entry into the Ministry of Silly Walks when he went off? Laughed my t*ts off....... I laughed hard too, good man for time wasting as as soon as he went over the white line, he started walking normally again Fonte was my MoM, excellent performance, especially as he was captain for the night, hopefully will be the future captain too. No one has mentioned that the Sky commentator twice said how good Antonio was for someone who had come directly from non-league football, and how well we had done to pick him up, failing to mention the fact that we have him on loan from Reading! That really annoyed me. Same opinion as everyone else on Antonio, very raw, good spurts but very erratic. I would have brought Waigo on with 20 mins to go, surely proven by the fact that Antonio got cramp eventually. Ref made some shocking decisions, what did he say when Thomas lifted his shirt to show the ref the massive stud marks going all down his chest and stomach (clearly visible on Sky)? "Oh, it was your fault Thomas for lowering your chest when trying to get the ball"? Also, no one else has mentioned it, but I'm sure linesmen/refs cracked down not long ago on players holding the ball up in the corner of the pitch when time wasting at the end of matches, and I've seen 'fouls' been given for exactly what Antonio done in other games. Or didn't do of course! perhaps it is some unofficial rule or something the refs adhere to.
