Dons 0-1 Saints - Reaction

Arizona

Recommended Posts

Antonio or Fonte would get my MOTM. Both superb tonight. Lallana did not impress me too much - he held the ball too long on more than one occasion. Wotton - dunno - not good enough, but we win with him in the side?! Ref a complete and utter noob-head. And why did the black lino give a free-kick when Antonio was shielding the ball at the end in the corner - he got pushed around by 3 players FFS!!! Overall a good result - just hope all those yellows and Morgans red don't mess up the next few games.

Dull game, numb toes but good support (although our fans seemed not to be arsed maybe cos their turn out was so poor & didn't really inspire as much banter as often occurs!)

Shockingly bad ref but quite impressed with the ground (ESP. the unmanned/electronic turnstiles, concourse that looks onto the pitch, etc.) & it'd be even nicer when they add the extra seating & finish the cladding & construction. Plenty of parking. They even had comfy, padded seats (loads of leg room) although didn't get to test them other than half time. We had to bloody stand the whole game as annoying supporters always seem to insist on standing for 90mins despite having seating. WHY??? Forces everyone else to stand. Stewards should do more to seat people. Also, nearly a fight infront of us - 2 guys having handbags (I think one was the Dad of the lads who kept trying to start songs that no-one joined in with!)

Poor support for MK Dons. Poor performance too. I wonder how they managed their league position as both times they've been awful!

Tracked back, fair enough. Long throw? Woopdee. Scared the sh*t out of them, then hoofed it out of play. Quality.

Repeating Gary Birtles comments Ponts?

Pace and long throw are two standout attributes that Antonio posesses.

I can't think of too many other players in our squad where I could name them having two standout attributes.

It doesn't matter that his final ball was ****, as his pace completely unsettled their defence and put them under serious pressure. Pressure which eventually lead to a deserved goal, which he took well.

Hardly embarrasing performance.

He may be a little hit and miss at times, but he has potential at least.

Far too much miss that hit for me.

Should go back to Tooting and learn his trade as his level, i.e Crossing/passing

Jesus, you are miserable tonight.

I created the Wotton thread after the Millwall game stating that he has been sh*te, but I thought he was actually pretty solid today.

He is a rudimentary waste of time. Unable to pass, track or do anything with the ball other than hoof it upfield, or just in the air.

What a load of absolute b*llocks.

Left flank of Mills and Lallana, so by no means bodybuilders.

Perry, Wotton and Antonio are not hugely physical players.

their left flank would have been attacked by thomas and antonio, and they aren't small/light players!

If you watch Fonte, when a high ball comes towards our two CB's, he comes a good 5 yards out of position, leaving a large gap, luckily Perry does'nt attack the high ball so cant sit a yard back and inside.

Jaidi attacks the ball too from what I have seen, hopefully this has been adressed or there is a large gap behind for any loose ball.

btw, Gleeson = tosser

Fonte was solid tonight. Whenever Jaidi gets the ball I have a hint of nervousness at the back of my mind, mainly cos he is slow on the turn and his distribution isn't great, but with Fonte, I am totally confident in his ability.

I hope so, watching the game a second time and Fonte does'nt allways win his headers clearly, they bobble into this gap, luckily where Perry is sweeping.

Ok performance - everything you would expect from us. MK Dons couldn't deal with the hoofball -is that what we've become?- but many teams can - as Colchester, Millwall and Leeds have recently shown. Their midfield was too lightweight and allowed us to dictate play, especially in the first half.

Can't fault our commitment - Antonio was everywhere (looks especially good when he takes a more central position) and Wotton proved his critics wrong (me included). Only Lallana looked really off the pace but if you believe reports he was playing with an injury. But still have question marks over our quality not least ability to retain possession which was called for in the 2nd half. Lets enjoy the JPT - anything else for now looks just a little far off.

What a bunch of brilliant supporters we have.

Almost non-stop chanting, a senese of humour and a fine advert for our footbal team.

well done one and all.

I noted though that the ones who went on the pitch at the end were baing filmed by the police, hope they see it as just over exuberance and go easy on them, after all it was fairly harmless, but i didn;t see those same fans invading the pitch at Millwall! I also saw one steward get a thump from one idiot which imho was totally uncalled for.

It was the same kid who took the mick against Norwich and several games before. Exuberance my a**. For what its worth, he now has two Papa shirts.

Just a shame the steward did come down harder on his (older) mate - you could see he was sorely tempted to. The fat freaky bast*rd who took his shirt off and danced around, however, was funny.

We're going to do it, I can see Wembley on the horizon (literally, I live there)

But I'm in Africa on Final Day, which simply means that we'll stuff Dons at SMS and then destroy Carlisle/Leeds at Wembley.

I can feel it.

Wedge you are missing the game? Bad times! Sadly I didn't go to Millwall. Give me a bell if you are going to any other away games and I'll make every effort to get there.

Well it was okay but i am concerned about our midfield now,we definitley need someone like Stock bossing the centre.

Nice stadium but how the hell can you only get 4,000 turn up for a semi final.Got to be the worst fans ever. They do not deserve anything and how the hell can they justify extending that ground for the world cup bid.

They had some tosser banging a drum all game and i think it was hard for our fans as we were basically singing to ourselves.

I wish they would finish these bloody roadworks on the M1 / M25 and M3, as soon as you got out of one 50mph zone you entered another.

Cheap beer in the pub before the game as well only £2.35 per pint Enigma Tavern although was a bit of a hike to the ground.

Most people won't give a **** about this but I think all football fans should care. Could the title of this thread be changed to Franchise 0 Saints 1. They're not really the Dons - that's AFC Wimbledon. They may have a nice stadium, but they're a pretend football club from a town where everyone supports Chelsea or Arsenal.

They don't have vocal fans because they don't have real fans. They're not a football club but a Franchise made up of numpties.

Don't be daft

Football clubs have and always will evolve/change/rise/fall

Didn't saints used to be a church team?

What the hell have we got to do with the local church now?

eh, would've been a bit difficult invading the pitch from the upper tier.

As for the steward well he's just a steward a ****in steward....

Good result.

Shame about Morgan - how many games is a stright red 2 or 3?

A clean sheet - blimey I thought Kelvin always had to let 1 in!

Must fill SMS for the 2nd leg on the 9th - can I make a suggestion?

Only let The Itchen North be filled by ex-season ticket holders and members (like me) who always sat there. We need the surround sound of both stands to create that couldron of noise...

We're The Itchen...you know the rest!

Good win away from home. Gleeson should have been sent off. He started the whole melée.

On a negative note, when are we ever going to score from a corner?. You might come up with hundreds of examples now, but out corner counts are usually massive and we don't punish teams from them.

Exactly this. Just watched the highlights on SSN again.

For the sending off, Morgan looked like he was going back to apologise for the tackle when Gleeson grabbed him by the throat. OK, Morgan shouldn't have pushed him in the neck, but it was a natural, instinctive reaction to shrug him off. Certainly not violent conduct.

And for the Lloyd James booking; James comes in wagging the finger (a bit needless but harmless) and makes no physical contact with any player. Glesson runs up from behind him, places two hands on the back of his head and shoves him away. Yet its the player who made no physical contact with anyone that gets punished.

Terrible refereeing.

Genuinely i would rather he was playing against us. Yeah he is fast, but when he fails to get it in time after time, even with time and a player begging for a tap in at the far post.....he is a waste of space

Sorry mate, nothing personal, but you are quite simply wrong. Antonio isn't the finished article, I agree. But he's only 19 and was playing non-league last season; he has lots of potential. Last night he played really well apart from a couple of poor crosses in the first 15 minutes or so, and even then he had after all got into the position to make those bad crosses, when maybe other players wouldn't have got there.

He's got pace, physique and skill. He hasn't yet got a consistent football brain. He may turn into a top player, or he may not. As someone else said, remember how much stick Kenwynne Jones got at first here. ..a similarly raw player learning the trade. We'll get some good games from Antonio and some poor ones while he is learning. Last night was a good one.

Anyone explain why a group of lads were holding up and waving their shoes in the air a couple of times in the game and what were they singing?

Quite a dull game I thought the mini pitch invasion was not necessary and the kid got the shirt of Wayne Thomas didnt he?

Well.

We should have won the game AND the tie last night.

Many missed chances - Lallana fluffed two, Antonio, Fonte....we should have battered them to be honest.

Had we played someone alongside Lambo who could hit a barn door with a banjo we would be celebrating Wembley already.

Holmes looked enthusiastic when he came on, and did the type of running and closing down I'd love to see from Lallana.

Don't want to start a war but didn't he look decidedly average? Few lovely flicks, but no end product. He looks like he needs a rest.

Ref was a tool.

Couldn't really ask for much more than that. I only saw the second half and missed the penalty incident so can't make a judgement, but I thought Saints kept the ball well and didn't panic when we went down to 10 men.

Ref had a bit of a shocker but we should be used to that by now in L1.

Clean sheet away from home and now we have the psychological edge for the return leg at SMS.

Bring it on!!!

you'd think for a regional final, they'd appoint someone with a bit of nous....blatant penalty missed and as for sending off Spiderman, how come Gleeson is allowed to grab somebody by the throat and only get a yellow card....if Spiderman goes for raising his hands, so should the other lobster-faced tosser

As fans we should target Gleeson in the second leg - not just booing but chants of "you're not very good" etc. We also need to ensure the ref is a home ref - go down in the penalty box under the slightest pressure and 30,000 of us howl for a penalty and really dispute any decision given against Saints, whilst encouraging our lads. Gleeson looks like the sort of player that would totally lose the plot (a very poor man's Alan Smith), or rather any hint of remote talent that he has. Also, if Lewington starts for them that is effectively a second goal for Saints as he was abysmal at SMS and the worst outfield player we've come across this season.
