Dicko Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Honest and hardworking. Sadly, not good enough for this league. End of.
SaintDonkey Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Gotta disagree - he was excellent in our first couple of games but has gone backwards since. He's never gonna set the world alight but good enough for this level.
captainchris Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Very harsh IMO. Sadly he really is not quite up to it.
Mewsta Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Disagree I agree with you and disagree too
saint-crinny Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Wotton and Morgan in central midfield for me
Um Bongo Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Far too small, gone off the boil. Never did see what the fuss was about with him.
Matt SFC Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 It is embarrassing how fickle some fans are.
Thedelldays Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 It is embarrassing how fickle some fans are. why does having an opinion mean you are fickle...?
Dicko Posted 17 September, 2008 Author Posted 17 September, 2008 It is embarrassing how fickle some fans are. I'm not fickle Matt I have a season ticket, I've watched him play many times, and IMO he isn't good enough for this league
madruss Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Tricky one this. I think the trouble with Gillett is that when he has an off game he is really found wanting and doesn't have the raw, physical attributes to fall back on that, say, a Euell or a Wotton has. On the other hand when he has a really good game, a la Derby or Brum, he is an excellent part of the midfield - full of running, closing down exceptionally well and playing a vital role in some of the fast paced passing moves. I think Wotton and Spiderman should be the partnership for now, allow Gillett a break. Perhaps he'll benefit from fighting for his place again
Arizona Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Not sure you can be that short and be effective in a central role. Some smart a*se is now going to point out Dennis Wise or something, but I think maybe Gillett CDAJFU at RB.

Some smart a*se is now going to point out Dennis Wise or something, but I think maybe Gillett CDAJFU at RB. I think he's more left footed but point taken. I'd like to see someone take the LB role so we could get more out of Surman...

hypochondriac Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 His passing has been awful in the last few games. I hope he recaptures his form.
Fowllyd Posted 17 September, 2008 Posted 17 September, 2008 Not sure you can be that short and be effective in a central role. Some smart a*se is now going to point out Dennis Wise or something, but I think maybe Gillett CDAJFU at RB. I think he's more left footed but point taken. I'd like to see someone take the LB role so we could get more out of Surman... I seem to remember a certain Alan Ball playing in central midfield... But I like the idea of Gillett as a full back - he's a tenacious little bugger and can tackle. Not sure if he's predominantly left-footed - he takes corners and free kicks with his right. He looked excellent in the Carling cup match against Birmingham I thought, then anything but against Blackpool and tonight.
Rod Le Shearer Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Not sure you can be that short and be effective in a central role. Some smart a*se is now going to point out Dennis Wise or something, but I think maybe Gillett CDAJFU at RB. agreed. the modern footballer is getting taller & taller, and physique becomes even more relevant when there is a lot left to desire ability-wise. (as in this league) when it comes to Gillet, his size is a problem because of his role in the team. he is supposed to tackle and challenge, both in the air and on the ground. with such a poor disposition,he is always going to struggle in this position,IMO.
um pahars Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Just being totally honest, I have never rated him and after last night I am still of the same opinion. That's not being fickle just being honest of how I see him as a player. Would love to be made to eat humble pie (as I have had to on other occasions, notably saying Shearer misses too many one on ones), but just don't think I will be doing so. I was worried when people were saying he was our best player pre season against lower league opposition, because for me that was an indication of how poor the others must have been.
Saint for ever Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 We should definately have started Schneiderlin
Window Cleaner Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Wotton and Morgan in central midfield for me Gasmi should be starting to train again in a couple of weeks, he's a pocket battleship, really strong and quick with it.Pity he'll not be ready for first team action for at least another month.
BotleySaint Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Gillet isn't a first choice midfielder but is a good squad player, we need those! In the absence of anything better he at least has energy and usually makes good tackles.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Man of the match at Derby. Disapointing since.
KK the 2nd Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 I disagree. I think he should have stayed on last night. We lost the midfield battle when he went off and Ipswich totally dominated from that point.
mprobert Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 First few games, like the rest of the team, he was full of confidence and fight - I think they've all been a bit mentally scarred (and scared) since then. Confidence and belief is such a big part of the game but it usually comes with experience - and winning
Dicko Posted 18 September, 2008 Author Posted 18 September, 2008 He went on loan to Blackpool 2 seasons ago, and played an important part in their promotion I remember Blackpool fans saying he played right-midfield and he was great there, but whenever he moved into the middle he lacked something This was in League 1!
PokingFun Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 He went on loan to Blackpool 2 seasons ago, and played an important part in their promotion I remember Blackpool fans saying he played right-midfield and he was great there, but whenever he moved into the middle he lacked something This was in League 1! To be honest I felt the same about him. In my mind I wondered why Blackpool did not take him permanently when they clearly had an opportunity to do so after their promotion to the CCC. Obviously their manager, GB and NP did not deem him good enough to be a starter in this division and sadly after his promising start this seems to be bearing truth. Before anyone starts to suggest he is a youngster learning the ropes, the guy is about 23 I believe so not very young at all.
saintsfannick Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 gillett is our worst player by a mile and his selection in the starting XI every week is an example that poortvliets gone youth crazy!! would much rather see euell in their when he's back or a different formation, 1 up front is not working and mcgoldrickis overated! my team would be when their all fit- davis thomas svensson perry surman dyer wotton skacel lallana bwp pekhart
oldsarum Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 His passing has been awful in the last few games. I hope he recaptures his form. Absolutely right, Simon play very well in our early games, but he's now putting too many passes astray, culminating in last night when under no pressure with us palying the ball around the back four with ease he passed straight to an Ipswich player in centre circle; with no Saints player in sight, at the start of the move for their second goal. However he wasn't the only one at fault. For the last 20 mins last night the whole back four seemed incapable maikng a forward pass to anyone in a red and white shirt and if they did the midfield and Mcgoldrick in particular up front did there best to give it straight back to an Ipswich player.
SNSUN Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Looked poor the couple of times I've seen him, but don't deny he's a hardworker. I'd still rather have the experience of Wotton and the sprayed passes of Schneiderlin in front of the back 4.
mitch01 Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Don't think we should give up on him yet, probably our weakest CM on recent performances but he could pick it up again. Really impressed me home to Brum in the league, but he was really awful vs Blackpool and QPR.
Scudamore Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Because on here fickle means saying the opposite of what someone else has said a while ago. People heard gillett being praised a while ago, now hear someone criticising. It doesn't matter if the person criticising has never praised him, he's still fickle apparently. We have a saints forum logic deficit. Also, on a more serious point, many do seem to think fickle merely means changing your opinion, which isn't true at all. The key is that it means changing your opinion lightly and frequently. If you gain new insight into something and change your opinion based on it, that's just learning. Sticking with said opinion in the face of new contradicting opinion would possible be stubborn. Don't get me started on the use of "deluded" on here. As far as I can tell, it's just the icing on top of any argument and it means you win. You're deleuded... I'm a big fan of Gillett... I also appreciate that it's impossible for a football player to play at the top of their game every single game...but when Gillett does he's a cracking little player...hmmm...i sounded a bit like Harry Redknapp there... T'riffic
West End Saint Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 I thought the last 3 games he has been poor looking for the hollywood passes and not affective against Brum and Derby he was very good he needs dropping at the moment play Morgan & Wotton for me I think Gillett will come back and be a decent player for us but he needs taking out of the firing line for the next few games
derry Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 Honest and hardworking. Sadly, not good enough for this league. End of. What does "End of" signify? If that means no other opinion has value, what are you posting it on here for.
derry Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 It seems when the wide players are actually wide, it gives him the options to pass and he plays better. Against Blackpool and last night the wide man was wandering inside and he didn't look good.
saint1977 Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 I think he's an excellent little player but not being helped out by those around him. To make JP's system work, players need to MOVE as well as pass. After Ipswich scored, that stopped happening and SG's options were limited.
St Landrew Posted 18 September, 2008 Posted 18 September, 2008 I maintain that Simon Gillet is good enough for this league. Agreed, he's gone off the boil slightly, since the QPR match, but this is the first time he's had a real run in a Saints shirt, where it matters. He's bound to feel the pressure. All the players must have felt really down, and it's good that they've bounced back a little against Ipswich. Gillet will come good again, and so will the rest of the team.
Smalls Posted 19 September, 2008 Posted 19 September, 2008 Sorry I am in the camp of not good enough just plays to many hospital passes, you watch him loves to play the long pass which works now and again but his size and lack of strengh will always find him out. Oh and his finishing is terrible
saintjinksie Posted 19 September, 2008 Posted 19 September, 2008 Honest and hardworking. Sadly, not good enough for this league. End of. spot on.
L1Minus10 Posted 19 September, 2008 Posted 19 September, 2008 He's been running on empty last 3 games. needs a rest. Jury still out on him.
Whitey Grandad Posted 19 September, 2008 Posted 19 September, 2008 He's been running on empty last 3 games. needs a rest. Jury still out on him. Needs a rest after half a dozen games? There's another 40-odd to go! I will say this for him, though. He never hides if anything goes wrong and is always looking for the ball.
Chez Posted 20 September, 2008 Posted 20 September, 2008 I like his effort but he has been a little sloppy with his passing/first touch in a few games. I don't see a better option in the middle. He's a far far better player than Wotton.
