Steve Claridge on Southampton FC and others

I wouldn't bite his hand off. I'd prefer promotion to a cup by a million miles.

Did you not read what he wrote:confused:

At the end of the day, if you offered a Saints fan no promotion this year but a trophy, they'd bite your hand off.

i agree with what he says, tbf i always seem to agree with him - he does talk sense, and even though he has skate connections, he is always very fair and honest when previewing/reviewing us.

Is the JPT more important than promotion? That's a good question actually and be a good poll to have. One Wembley Trip with success, I would probably err towards promotion myself.

The JPT is not more important than promotion but winning the JPT is more likely than winning promotion I would have thought

Always said play-offs were an outside chance, yet after a good run of form people thought that we were definitely going to be in the play-offs at the end of the season. Like SC says, if you don't win in your first 10 games, chances are you won't be in the upper echelons of the table come the end of the season.

He's still a dirty skate, but he's talking sense at least.

A trophy of any sort is vital in giving this club it's self respect back. I personally would make the JPT our priority with a top half league finish the minimum requirement, with top 10 the aim.

Not only would it be a great day out but it would be an awesome platform to build on, any Wembley appearance would be.

The skates built well after a Wembley final.

promotion or JPT

why on earth would anyone take the JPT over promotion this season

utter stupidity

I dont think anybody is saying that

But after a bad start and -10 points winning a cup would be good

what if we get to wembley and get hammered....would be a disaster

Not having a good day then:(

Nobody has hammered us this season so why at Wembley?

or any defeat by carlise...

losing at wembley in the JPT would be awful

OK so when should we lose in the JPT tonight or on the 9th

I'd bite his hand off. But just for the fun of watching him squeal with pain :smt093

OK, not really

I like Claridge actually

OK, so he's a skate, but I've always found his opinions to be fair.

He never slags Saints off for the sake of it, in fact you'd never know he was a skate because he often speaks highly of us

Yeah, I've come to respect Steve Claridge too. He chooses his words very carefully, and is rarely wrong with his assessments. If you read his last line properly, he writes about a scenario where Saints are unable to achieve promotion, but manage to get a trophy. Of course we'd take that scenario.

Because, as Claridge says, we have an outside chance of the playoffs, I don't mind in the slightest that Saints are trying to go as far in every competition that they can. However, if we hadn't had that 10 point penalty, and were consequently higher up the league because of that, I would want us to waste our time with cup competitions.

He is the most boring football pundit ever on the Football League show!

aye, but a football man who despite skate connections talks a lot of sense, who would you prefer, Jamie Redknapp who sounds good but talks ****e, or Claridge who sounds ****e but talks good?

Skate.

I would give up the tin pot trophy for promotion any day

Just shows you're not reading it correctly, albeit along with several others. He doesn't suggest one [promotion] or the other [a trophy], but if promotion is unobtainable this season, then we'd be OK with winning a cup or two.

That's a no-brainer, as it's better than achieving nothing.

Do you practice talking like a *****? or does it just come natural?

Yeah let's not go for glory on the off chance we don't win eh!!!

Day out at Wembley only worth it if we win??

I very rarely look/post on here. I usually post on here after an enjoyable away game, and pretty much every time I have a look at the threads on here this complete goober posts utter garbage, and tries to twist every little thing into a slanging match.

Promotion after having 10 points deducted, and a slow start after rebuilding, is/was a complete long shot. Considering we were days away from not existing, a day out at Wembley in any cup final is fantastic. Claridge talks sense. This delldays is a prized Jollyrancher

Well said fella - you should post more often.

I've been spouting this sort of level headed view for months but I apparently seem to fit into the 'happy clappers' section. Unfortunatley some people will never be happy or realistic.

Pretty much like 'i would prefer not to get my foreskin stuck in my jeans if i can help it' then

Got to say Claridge talks the game in a realistic light. Was on the train from Waterloo and had a chat with him for the trip home about loads of stuff. He always enjoyed the banter at St Marys, thinks PFC is a joke nowadays. He knows the game from top to bottom from managing Weymouth to playing in PL. He lives just outside Titchfield. His column on bbc site is always a good read.
