Patterson to leave?

Paterson is awful, he needs to move on to a L2 club. We need a good striker to share the load in partnering RL with Connolly. That leaves us with also needing a 4th striker, nothing special just an average L1 type player who we should be able to pick up for peanuts and who will be a huge improvement on Paterson.

!!!!!!!! The last time I saw him he came on for 10 minutes and did the job asked of him well. I suppose you thought Kenwynne Jones was **** too when he played for us.

I have to admit to not being a fan, until his last sub appearance at home in which he was excellent.

He lives in Fareham?!

I think a loan would be better. He did look handy last time I saw him and he is young. We are slowly going back to the way it should be, where we are no longer HAVING to rely on our youth and can afford the luxury of using those who are in the first team on merit, like Llanna & Spider. For this reason, I think a loan to a L2 or L1 side would do him good and give us a better idea as to whether he can do the business or not.

However, if we could use him as some kind of swap deal for a striker like Barnard who is proven quality now, then I wouldnt be against that.

I may of written this a tad early.

Being ITK may sometimes pre-empt even what the club/player will decide to do!

However, IMHO Paterson should make a move and get some regular football.

He's in the same position that Adam Lallana was ..2 years ago ..

very promising but ??????? . He needs to get some games /and /some goals.

I only hope he goes on loan, because if he moves permanent we may lose a v.g prospect.

The difference is that while Kenwyne was definitly learning his trade in his early time with us, he was always a great athlete. He had size, strength and speed in ubundance. Paterson has none of these things. Yes, he is still young but he is not ever going to get in the first team regularly here so needs to be moved on. L2 would seem to be his level, nothing wrong with that as long as he is playing. The same goes for Tompson and White too. Molyneaux and Boyle could prob do a job at Conference level and Pulis? Well maybe as a painter and decorator....

I really hope we're only loaning patto out - selling him would be a mistake IMO, got a feeling he'll turn out to be another one in a few years we'll be saying ''why did we let him go...!''

he's not quite ready for us yet - but will be a good player in time IMO.

How the hell would know what level Jamie White plays at?

Patterson is a big tall lad and has shown strength (I'm amazed anyone doubts this) and a high workrate in the games he has played for us. He's not lightening quick obviously, but he is quick enough for a big lad. When he was racing away from the Ipswich defenders last season to score he looked spritely enough. The problem is that he had two poor games near the start of the season that Pardew simply can not put to the back of his mind. The fact he was decent last season and had a great game against Millwall at the start of this seemingly counts for ****. IMO he has a great future and we should not sell this lad. A loan maybe, especially as Pardew doesn't trust him to see out games (so he's not even getting five or ten minutes). Played regularly he'd score at this level. I wonder if Barnard is a better player?

It sounds like Southend have responsed to one of our Barnard bids by pointing out that they will be left with little quality up front (wouldn't that leave them with Laurent as pretty much their only playable striker?). It only stands to reason that they would enquire about a part exchange.

The asking price for Barnard is rumoured to be around £250K. With Paterson still having time on his contract I'd expect him to fetch more than that, perhaps even £400K or more? (any ideas on a valuation?). Might we not offer a direct swap, with no cash involved, but with a massive % of any future transfer? Could suit all parties, with Paterson getting first team opportunities, Southend retaining a strike force, and Saint getting both a proven striker a having a gamble on a future payday at the same time...

I will be gutted if we sell Paterson.

He did have a couple of bad games at the start of the season, bit harsh for Pardew to rate him on those performance. Swindon especially as he was playing on the wing and the whole team was shocking, Pardew just set up wrong.

Wont be sorry to see him go - saw alot of him last season and his few appearances this season. Generally, I've been disappointed. Perhaps it was a bit unfair to throw him into the CCC and he's looked bright without being threatening as a sub (if i remember got a good goal at Portman Road). But he doesn't have many raw attributes to work with - he's tall but too lightweight; his touch is tidy but nothing more; he's not especially quick and isn't a natural born finisher (i actually preferred Jordan 'ipod' robertson to him).

He's a long way off the first team. Ideally we would send him on loan and see how he fares before making any decisions. But if we need to clear the decks before we bring new players in (a fair enough policy) and/or he can be used as part of an exchange, it will be in everybody's interest.

I don't think he's lightweight at all, he's not as strong as Lambert yet and doesn't score as many goals. All he needs is games and before to long he will be at Lamberts level.

I've seen him play loads for the reserves and he's allways difficult to play against and gets on the end of things in the box.

All he needs is games, i'm suprised Pardew hasn't given him more 15-20 minute cameo appearances while we've been 2 goals up to give Lambert a bit of a rest.

Paterson, Thomson and White all need to go on loan for the rest of this season to League 2 clubs

Boyle, Molyneux, and Martin as well probably - but maybe conference clubs

they all need competitive playing time - and the level our reserves play at is pathetic

Bournemouth would be a good club for some of them - if they didn't have a transfer embargo - or maybe Aldershot - meaning they could live down here and still train with Saints one or two days a week

Pulis probably needs to go on a free transfer

Thomson, Paterson and White have all shown in flashes that they've got the potential to make the grade - they just need the time and opportunity to develop their games

Wade Elliott, Brian Howard, Brian Stock, Arron Davies and Scot MacDonald are all players we've released or given up on far to soon in past years

I bet we'd all like them in our match day squad now though!

.

just out of interest which games did you see him in last season? Did you see his debut at Reading? He was tremendous when he came on in that game and showed instantly that he was strong, gutsy and more than willing. Strikers that get stuck in always impress me, but I also liked the way he held the ball up and his ability in the air. He showed all these things against Millwall this season. He lacks finess I grant you, but the player you describe is not one I see. I'm dumbfounded by the "Lightweight" comment.
