Obese people who are unable to squeeze into a single seat will have to pay more on Air France-KLM.

Obese people who are unable to squeeze into a single plane seat will have to pay nearly double to fly

with Air France-KLM in future, the company says.

Extra-large flyers will have to pay 75 per cent of the cost of a second seat (the full price excluding

tax and surcharges) on top of the full price for the first, spokeswoman Monique Matze said on Tuesday,

saying the decision was made for "safety" reasons.

"We have to make sure that the backrest can move freely up and down and that all passengers are

securely fastened with a safety belt," said Matze.

People who cannot fit into a single seat are fastened by slotting the belt tip of one seat into the plug

of the next - stretching over both seats.

By paying for both, the overweight passenger will be assured that two seats will be available next to each other.

They will, however, get their money back on flights that are not fully booked, said Matze.

The new measure will apply for people who book their tickets from February 1 for all flights from April 1 this year.

The average plane seat is 43 centimetres wide - 44 centimetres for long haul flights.

Good, lets hope everyone else follows suit.

Last week I was stuck next to someone who should have bought two seats. It took him four attempts to get his backside in between the arms of his seat. He spilled out into my seat so that I spent two hours hanging out halfway in the aisle and the poor s0d on the other side of him was squashed against the fuselage. I want a refund for the half of my seat I didn't get to use.

At least one major airline in the US already does this - South West I think. It's not unreasonable especially for the people who have paid for a 'whole' seat yet have it encroached on by their well built neighbour!

Good news. About time fatties started realising how much space they take up. I used to have a fattie bum bum next to me at Saint Mary's, taking up my space with his chunky arms. Thankfully he fooked off after we got relegated (probably comfort eating somewhere).

It ******es me right off that sometimes I've been charged for being over my baggage allowance when on the plane there have been people who weigh probably twice as much as me. Next time I'm just gonna wear all my clothes instead of shoving them in my luggage.

The sooner fat becomes unacceptable to all, the thinner everyone will be, that said, went on my nephews Wii Fit last weekend, put in my detail and told me I was obese, my character looked like Billy Bunter, now adding up points daily from weight watchers.

Fat is Ugly !!

This is what I find most shocking these days, that so many people out there don't seem to mind being fatties.

Fat people make me feel slightly sick.

I'm sat next to a fat **** on the train right now! He's definately

encroaching my space the fat ****.

I was also squeezed up next to a female blobby today on the train (I'm not tiny myself, but a seat's a seat). It got too much to bear and I jumped off the train, intending to get into the next carriage. Ballsed it up and ended up waiting for the next train in a desolate industrial estate. How can a person be happy with an arm the same size of an average man's thigh?

Maybe comfort eating helps?

I have, in the past, made this exact point when being told I had to pay excess baggage.

Also a child under 2 goes free, sitting on parent's lap, but you get zero baggage allowance for them. This is crazy as you need loads for babies on flights; not least nappies, change of clothes, food, etc.

On a similar note: I wonder if the fatties who have to buy 2 seats get double the baggae allowance?
