Romsey Appreciation Thread

I think it's about time we had one.

Romsey is often known as God's Garden. At one point having more pubs per population than anywhere else in England.

Celebrity residents include Charlie Dimmock and Gordon Ramsey, as well as Southampton legend Andy Cook.

Romsey was also where Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent the first night of their honeymoon and was the place where classic television such as Worzel Gummidge and The Ruth Rendall Mysteries where filmed.

All hail Romsey

Does anyone else have any amazing Romsey facts?

None in Romsey, only near.

The main locations for filming Worzel Gummidge were the villages of Stockbridge, King's Somborne and Braishfield; all of which are near Romsey in Hampshire. The 'Scatterbrook Farm' scenes were filmed at Pucknall in Braishfield.

In the summer of 1980, filming of the Christmas-special episode "A Cup o' Tea and a Slice o' Cake" in the town of Lymington.

Just to repeat, Braishfield, Kings Somborne, Michelmarsh and Timsbury are all classed as 'Romsey' and come within the 'Romsey Extra' area.

Within the Romsey Extra areas, we also have Sir David Frost and Roger Waters as famous residents.

Braishfield is a village and civil parish north of Romsey in Hampshire.

King's Somborne is a village in Hampshire, England. The village lies on the edge of the valley of the River Test. The 'Sombornes' comprise the scattered village of King's Somborne, together with the hamlets of Little Somborne, Up Somborne, and Ashley.

Michelmersh (not Michelmarsh) is a small, scattered village in Hampshire, England some three miles north of Romsey. It forms a civil parish with Timsbury that forms part of the Test Valley district.

Romsey Extra

A large Parish of 3,306 hectares with a population of 2,792, which surrounds the town of Romsey and includes the villages of Abbotswood, Ashfield, Lee, Moorcourt, Skidmore, Pauncefoot, Halterwood and Stanbridge Earls.

Neither Braishfield, King's Somborne or Michelmersh get a mention under 'Romsey Extra'.

I believe Inspector Wexford was also filmed in Romsey.

About 10 years ago myself and some colleagues saw Jimmy Carter, (former American President) drinking in The Mill at Dunbridge after fishing The Test. He had a few FBI guys with him. Carter was in his fishing gear, the rest in suits & sunnys - they almost blended in 8)

Richard Digence & Chris Tarrant also fish locally & I believe Digence lives around here somewhere.

I've worked in Michelmersh for 12 years.

I am from Romsey and lived there for 23 years. It's OK, it has it's moments (so to speak). Used to have the highest concentration of pubs in the country (due to the Whitbread brewery being based in the town centre) hence the well known expression 'so drunk he must have been to Romsey' which was nationally prevelant in days of old. The Beggars Fayre is quality and should be in everyones annual diary.

I'm also a Romsonian, although now living in God's chosen city. I can trace my mother's family in Romsey back to the 1850's.

I lived there for the first 25 years of my life and, when I was a kid, it was a small market town, with a Thursday livestock market (just behind Bell St). Everyone knew everyone else and most people worked in the town.

Now it's mainly a dormitory town and has lost a lot of it's character. Too many newcomers want to change things and the real locals can lose out.

This is happening in many "attractive" small towns that are within commuting distance of cities. Demand pushes up property prices forcing local young people to move elsewhere if they want to buy property.

It now also has one of the best Indian restaurants - Natraj great food and when I went the most fantastic looking barmaid!

If you went recently, it was probably my ex's sister, who I saw working in there a few months ago.

Romsey must be one of the most traditional towns in the country. The Romsey community hate modernisation and will tolerate tacky fast food corporations. Recently forbided a Dominos pizza starting up and will only allow the recent Subway to open until 8pm. I think the average age of a romsey resident is 85 and the latest the shops open is 4pm.

Good pub, one I frequent sometimes as my current lady-friend is on Pubwatch ( lol )

I thought she was a nurse Stu. How the hell did she manage to get on Pubwatch? Is her name Beverley Allitt?

I disagree to in some ways. It is a market town and opposed to commercialisation

The age thing is a myth, infact if anything, Romsey has quite a young population.

I married the first mrs h in Romsey Abbey. It did not last.

What is that tradition you have of 'beating the bounds' all about? Is that not to do with the official boundaries of Romsey?

Just discovered that the word 'Romsey' is not recognised on the spellcheck of this PC! Also just see that the word 'spellcheck' is not listed either!

Ver strange!!!!

Romsey is situated on the ancient road that is now known as the A27.

The people of Romsey are officially my next door neighbours (but one) as I too live on the A27.

I live not far from the A27 in Chichester, so does this connect me to the greatness of Romsey?????

Not that it has anything to do with Romsey, but I went to the Earl of March in Lavant (just north of Chicester) on saturday which has recently been turned into a restaurant. I found out that it was here that William Blake penned the words to Jerusalem, which means that downlands north of Chichester are England's green and pleasant land.

Haha... that was the old bint... I left her for another woman... ( who dumped me after a month :-( ) ... this one is the latest. :-)

So the garage didn't stay as a gym very long then - I thought you were getting married as you referred to her kids as your 'step children'?

That's a bit dangerous isn't it? Surprised you haven't been run over.

My mate once went out with a girl from Romsey. And that's a fact.
