do not say, after first goal

"the second goal is vital"

We have grasped the concept that there is a big difference between 2-0 and 1-1 on how the game is likely to finish!

Sorry had to get that off my chest - he says it every bloody game!

Oh, Mr. Merrington, and please don't say "Now we need to keep a clean sheet", because it's the kiss of death.

Those words have cost us more points than administration.

Thank god there is someone else there to interrupt him when he's about to go on a stating the obvious mission. As is often the case.

yeah, but he is quality! Saturday away games I can't get to wouldn't be the same with out his dulcet tones floating over the internet connection...

...and the fact that he still refers to the Saints as 'us' and 'we' shows he is still a Saint

I'll give him all that but I really struggle to listen to that voice most of the time.

Constantly find myself saying "well durrrrrr"

Since we got the crap new Saints Player, I've taken to listening to the opposition feed, but only when we're winning. At least that way you get some idea of what's actually happening on the pitch as it happens.

Thats nice - isn't it ?

Whatever anyone wants to say to make fun of his accent and comments ..

he is without doubt THE FINEST youth team coach this club has EVER had. 1984-1995 .

Le Tissier, Shearer, Maddison, The Wallaces, Moran. and a whole string of other less memorable names, many of whom were good enough to make a league career (somewhere else) - when they could get into our star-studded Div.1 sides of that era.

Good on ya, Dave M. He's no John Motson - but my goodness he knew how to coach young players.

Thats all very well and true but that doesn't mean he's made for radio, which is the gripe i/we have with the guy.

Surely such an amazing man possessing the skills you mention would be aware of how stupid he sounds stating the obvious/jinxing the game all the time?

"Now what saints DONT want to do is give away a goal now..."

No Sh!t Merrington.

This is my favourite. The man could win awards in stating the obvious.

I'm glad he's no John Motson, Motson is without a doubt one of worst commentators ever. Can't stand the blabbering fool...."now, look here...", and "ah hahaha" whenever something actually not very funny occurs.

Merrington is actually good comedy value, over the last few seasons he has become "the voice" of solent, when saints are on. Now whether thats a good thing or not.......

Very few people are "made for radio" . I worked with Hospital Radio in So'ton in the 1970's and believe me the number of people who wanted to present progs. who thought they were God's gift to the radio world - would fill a football stadium - well, a small one anyway.:)

Commentating on football isn't like reading the news, and very few people in the football world are university graduates. Having some enthusiasm for the subject is most important, and as far as criticising Merrington, I've heard worse than him standing up in the House of Commons and rabbiting on about - nothing in particular.:smt015

TBH - I'd prefer Merrington or Jimmy Case anytime...at least they played the game..compared to some of the Solent presenters over the last few years.

"Saints need a real BOOOOST"

Good old Merrington, I've only listened to him once this season, since I've actually been at the games and not needed the radio. When I was younger and didn't go as often I used to enjoy listening to his silly statements, and laughing at Radio Solent's embarrassingly awful amateurism.

Good times.

Funny that the two of them are never in a position where they get a good view of the game, probably accounts for them not being able to tell us which end the ball is at, who's got the ball etc. I hope Solent don't pay them too much for all the unintended comedy.

I think that Dave is a hero! His sidekicks, however, waffle on about whatever is happening elsewhere or discussing past events so you don't know what is really going on on the pitch in realtime. Better to get to the game as someone said earlier on this thread. Oh, I also wish that the commentator would be less enthusiastic about the opponents getting a goal: they could try to sound a bit depressed like the rest of us at such an event. Hopefully, we wont have too many, if any, opportunities to test that!

"Well, let me just explain, for the benefit of the listeners, what's happenin' out here Adam."

"Well, it looks like he's going back to 4-4-2, Dave."

"Well, that's exactly what I sed a few minutes ago, Adam."

Yeah, spot on, and that one in bold really winds me up.

two things you can do if you really cant bear him....

1) switch the radio to another station

2) got to the match

FFS - the man is a saint through and through. he gets handsomely paid for watching saints home and away and for talking about them whilst he is watching them.

what a great job, lucky man. who is the fool you or him?

Waiting now for the obligation from at least one poster to say.

I do like Merrington but he has a habit of repeating exactly what his co-commentator has just said. Other phrases he likes to use include:-

"Saints must keep their shape now" (usually when defending a set-piece)

"He was too easy-osy." (he used to say that a lot about Rasiak, I never understood what it meant, I presumed akin to being a lazy b@stard)

My favourite Merrington memory was when Kosowski played for us, he had the most awful time trying to pronounce his name.

Posted

"and the teams around the Saints will be looking at this scoreline Tristram, and they'll be worried. This result will worry them"....predictably, we spunked a 3 goal lead within 10 minutes of that gem, and like a few others on here I've noticed that whenever Merrington talks about us coasting to victory and the side looking terrific, you can almost write the f*cking script. I wish he'd just stfu and stick to praying when we're ahead, I seem to recall he was a bit of a God-botherer when he was manager. (on reflection, that was probably understandable)

Legend - gold plated, FACT

His whispering mode, OMG, sublime, he's got to be up there with the greats, a strangely morphed crossover between Stewart Hall, Stanly Unwin, Ron Atkinson and Ronnie Barker. Youve got to love him.

change of subject slightly..

does anyone listen to the 3rd half...or what ever it is called

is it me or does that phone-in attract the most retarded people saints FC has to offer..?

Third half doesn't exist anymore, since Radio Hampshire got closed down

Merrington's worst which he has used on several occasions this season is: "What you don't want to do know, Adam, is lose the game." :smt081

Good observation, I've often thought the same. I can't help but feeling that the lack of intelligent punditry from an otherwise very nice man has something to do with it. It doesn't feel like I have anything to learn from somebody who thinks that 4-4-2 is the only "correct" (sic!) way to play and who thinks that the solution to all ills is to "send another striker on". I just think there is more to the game, even if I haven't figured it out yet. Superficial comments brings on superficial folks to the phone-in, maybe.

There hasn't been anybody on Radio Solent with any incisive views about anything since Harry Gration, and he wasn't providing punditry. Who was our best pundit?

Posted

I don't listen to Solent's post match programme for the fans ringing in, as I find myself cringing hearing their comments. But tbf to them, ringing up the programme, probably ill-prepared and on the spur of the moment, would make even the most eloquent slightly tongued. The trick is - don't ring in, those people..!

I listen out for Pardew's interview and other informed comment. Plus they tend to replay the goal action. Sometimes, Dave Merrington does highlight the odd thing that I might not have considered, but then he's at the match and being paid to watch closely. And if we all saw and heard the same things then there would be no debate.
