Wasn't it him who ran rings round Rio and the other CB, Silvestre I think it was, when he was at Coventry. As I remember him, he was quick with and without the ball, composed and had an eye for goal. Cant remember why he left Coventry though and haven't heard much of him since. A Maltese international too with a pretty good goal record for them. I reckon HCDAJFU and a 6 month deal would benefit him and us tbf. Gotta be better then Pericard at least

Would be a decent short term signing. Think he was at his best for Coventry coming from the left in a 4-5-1/4-3-3.

 

Cover for Lallana and a different option for the last 15-20 minutes if things aren't going our way.

 

I don't really understand the negativity towards him, he's a decent player and would provide backup to key positions. Not sure why people think every signing has to be good enough to jump straight into the starting XI and improve the team, football is a squad game.

Re Mifsud: Would be good if true. See if he's up to it, if he is then great, if not then we're not tied down to him for long.

 

So many rumours flying around at the moment, everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Now we've signed players like Lambert, Hammond and Fonte, some fans suddenly expect us to only sign current fans favourite's at other clubs or world beaters. Anything less will not do!

I saw him play for Cov quite a bit when I lived there - he's not that good. He does have an eye for goal, but he's not that quick, and I think he had an attitude problem at Cov

 

When he first moved to Cov he played really well, until they beat Man U (reserves) in a Carling Cup game at OT and scored both goals, after that he was never the same, got too big for his boots.

I think he left because he fell out with Coleman.

I remember reading the same from Cov fans, on a 6th month contract after being out of work for a few months I don't think he can afford to have an attitude problem here.

 

If it's true and he does sign for us it will probably be his last shot at football in England, can't see him getting another chance.

Hope ishe is wrong because I do not think his alleged attitude is what is needed at this club.

Jesus christ we are becoming a spoilt bunch of toss pots on here - if some1 said we were going to sign this guy 6 months ago we'd have said yes please....now we will only accept prem 'potential' players.

I saw Misfud play for Malta against Portugal in the world cup qualifier about a year ago and he looked a very tidy player to me. Very decent first touch and a good footballing brain. Not too dissimilar to Connelly, but it was hard to tell if he had the finishing prowess as they hardly got out their own half that day. Stood out a mile amoungst Malta's side (not saying anything) but more than held his own against Portugal.

 

I have to say I'd like to see us going for a striker that is going up the football world not down. We already have the experience with Connelly, Lambery and Waigo. Mind you who is there other than Jackson?

If he costs fook all, then what's the harm? Look at Pericard - a 6 month contract gives you the opportunity to put yourself in the shop window. Pericard did that, and now clubs want him, who is to say Mifsud won't give 100% to the cause too?

 

Up front we currently only have Lambert and Connolly. Saga and Paterson are out of favour seemingly, Waigo and Lallana are generally being used in a midfield capacity. I don;t think this would be the end of our search for a new striker, be it Barnard, Jackson, Pericard or whoever.

 

EDIT: Although it begs the question, if we're interested now, I'm suprised we weren't interested in August...

We have a squad of about 40 players.To sign another aging player when we have younger ones itching for a chance is not condusive to the fostering of a healthy team spirit. If he is only going to be used as cover why bother? we may not yet be able to attract the quality from the top clubs but neither do we need to add unnecessarily to our wage bill. He scores to infrequently to make me even slightly interested.

SO WHAT IN THAT IS THERE TO BE ASHAMED OFF?

Worth a bash, especially if on a free, we already have connelly and lambert who are both very good strikers on their day.

 

We have been asking for another striker, so why not have him on a free ?? Good little player, lots of pace, bound to try hard for us attempting perhaps to win a deal or to get a deal else where.

 

If it was me i would offer him a 6 month deal with option to extend.

 

What is everyone moaning about ?? Our priority was by far a CB, we have signed two with ability at this level and above ??

Did anyone else on here watch Villareal vs Celta Vigo on sky last night?

 

Celta beat a full strength Villareal with a team of youth players and reserves 1-0.

 

The young Celta midfielder Iago Aspas stood out, he was constantly chasing down and not letting the Villareal players have anytime on the ball, he is pacy and tenacious looked quite strong and composed on the ball and has a decent goalscoring record of 5 goals in 21 appearences, could well be worth a look by Pardews scouts.

Even so I fail to see why we need to employ more squad players. With the size of squad we have we should be buying/signing players that will feature regularly in our first team. That is IMHO of course.

Yes...IYHO. Who, apart from all the budding managers on this forum, has said he is only a squad player. You can view this both ways, they are all squad players, or they are all first team players. It's only a rumour, and he's being slated already. IF it's true, then the only manager at Southampton, who's opinion counts, is AP, and in AP we trust.

Who is to say he won't ?? I am sure we won't sign him unless he impresses in training

I think he looks a great squad signing. Can provide cover on both wings as well as up front and has a bit of quality about him. Connelly isn't going to be able to play every game and frankly I'd have him on the left and move Lallana to the right (dropping Antonio) every time. There are question marks about his attitude but I'd guess we won't offer him anything if he doesn't impress in training. It's a no lose situation really.

Would be interesting and would certainly give us something else up front. Pretty sure it was Mifsud who ran us ragged at the Ricoh in the 07/08 season, but that's only going from listening online.

 

Free transfer on a sixth month loan, not much to lose.
