Weston Saint Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 This from the Exeter website reveals a lot, it looks like the Ward deal did fall through afterall perhaps?... http://www.exetercityfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10436~1930971,00.htmlNot sure the Ward deal "fell through" I suspect Pardew realised it might be a risk (why 18 months deal?) and when he got back from Spain he pulled the plug and followed the Seabourne deal instead. Just a hunch, no knowledge on this one

St Marco Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Maybe a wise decision. I think a lot of people forget there is a very high chance we will still be in league one next season. Probably wise not to do a Burley and gamble everything on one push for it to back fire. Got to think for the future and if this guy is better then our youngsters then that is an improvement, even if it is only slight.
croome Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Im not saying perry's injury record is bad in fact its very good. All im saying is just like lambert who is a much younger player they need a rest at some point. They cant keep playing every match. Im really happy with our new signing its just a shame that some people are so negative about him.
trousers Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 is Ward really considered "Mayfair" material??? Pronb would go any further than Trafalgar Sq BUT the monopoly analogy is excellent and should be applied to all of our squad methinks.. off to give it consideration... Sounds like Pardew is prepared to take a chance with Seaborne Next...
Junction 9 Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Nice to see Saints sign someone a bit younger on a long contract. I sure Seeborn can learn a lot from our current defenders and the coaching of Pardew. Good luck here Danny.
Chez Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 (edited) if people think back to the first game of the season at SMS you will recall Millwall chasing the game in the last 15 minutes, bringing on Jason Price and chucking him up front as part of a three as they went long. It was Perry and I think Thomas that day failing yet again to cope with long ball football. As yet another long ball was failed to be won cleanly it went for a corner from which they scored (again because we didn't win a clearing header cleanly and Abdu headed it back and in). A 5'11" and 5'9" centre back pairing cost us that day. Since then we have signed Trottman 6'2", Jardi 6'3", Martin 6'3", Fonte 6'2" and Seaborne 6'3". Pardew, a centre back by trade is not daft. Chez Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Chez, Wayne Thomas is 6 foot 2 not 5 foot 11. if you say so, http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=9365 either way he is not all that good in the air in my book. More than happy with him as right back cover but he's a very poor centre back and I have said that pretty much since day one barring a great display at Sheffield United in his first few games. Matthew Le God Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 (edited) You can't have seen a game at St Mary's if you think Thomas is under 6 foot. Edited 13 January, 2010 by Matthew Le God

Chez Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 You can't have seen a game at St Mary's if you think Thomas is under 6 foot. Meh, I explained where I got my incorrect figure from, and you are right I should have questioned it, perhaps, but then again I've never seen a 6'2" centre back lose so many headers as Thomas, so why would I? Whatever, I'm just happy we have some tall lads in and hopefully they are better in the air than Thomas and Perry.

Well said chezer, i agree, he doesn't play like a man that is 6'2", he is terrible in the air. I am very happy with seaborne, think he has a good future. Also, where in the article at the top of this page does it suggest the Ward deal fell through ?? He hasn't had many injuries ??

Hopkins Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 I've never seen a 6'2" centre back lose so many headers as Thomas, so why would I? Probably because you can't judge someones height on there peformance as a centre back. You base it on a fact like how tall he is.

dockland Dave Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Surely the players he unearths, not purely bringing in so-called proven players, should judge a good manager. I suspect it was a straight choice between Ward and Fonte, both being ball playing centre backs. If CCC teams were having a look at him there must be something there. I think alot of you lot need to keep your feet on the ground. I am worried that some of you lot are getting delusions of grandeur. Remember it’s only six months ago that we had threads on here about who would go and see a reformed Saints in the blue square if we went under. We are 14th in div 1, and probably will still be in this league next year.

DrZuess1979 the 2nd Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Because someone is 6` does that mean he can`t jump. But in our case they can`t, as Thomas is built like a brick crap house.
tedmaul Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 Bit of a strange signing. Pardew or one of his scouts must have seen something. I've done a fair bit of Exeter stuff, though who am I to say. Potential maybe?

Andy_Porter Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 He had a great game for us in the 3-2 away win at Burnley in 06/07. 1.2m and he manages the odd great game in between injury and his usual 50 pence head performances. 1.2 million we're never getting back. woodsaint Posted 14 January, 2010 Share Posted 14 January, 2010 On the OS, Pardew on seabourne against us earlier in the season-"He was everything i expected him to be, i thought he was terrific on the day".
