niceandfriendly Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Good addition to the squad. We can't always buy from above, sometimes we need to buy back up players. labibs Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Really surprised about the negativity surrounding this signing. He seems to be a big, strong centre back, who has a decent amount of league experience for his relatively young age. If we can ship out Thomas this January, he would be a replacement who is: likely to be at least as good, on substantially lower wages and young enough to potentially improve greatly. I'm quite pleased with this signing, I think Pardew is also paying attention to signing players who he thinks will fit in well with the squad and not upset the team spirit. Maybe this guy fits the bill in that regard as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one for blind faith in any manager (the days of 'in GB we trust' firmly drummed that out of me), but AP has done very well for us so far and I am more than prepared to back his judgement at the minute. Hopefully I can get a look at both him and Fonte at Millwall on Saturday, particularly if Jaidi is out.
Midfield_General Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 not the sort of thing you should say without certainty or proof really. Just repeating the rumour that was doing the rounds last night on the other thread re SSN announcing he'd signed, then the club denying it. No proof, just repeating the rumour as lots of people don't seem to be aware of it...

instinct Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 If we look at what we have he probably is better than a lot of what we've got... Fonte and Jaidi are our best central pair but I'm sure Seaborne is better than Lancashire and that young one from Eastleigh. Given some of Thomas's performances he could well be better than him too. Against Perry, Seaborne is 10 years younger and has potential. Exeter seem sad to lose him too. Add to that Jaidi is injured for the next few weeks and he could be vital. I still hope we sign Ward in addition though, we really do ship too many goals.

Panda Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 There was a lot of concern expressed on here that we could not keep a clean sheet, however, we are scoring bags of goals - the main concern then is the defence right? We sign a right sided central defender who can play at right back and a left sided central defender who can play left back. This means we have three options depending on the opposition and the state of the game. Three at the back (Fonte, Jaidi and Seaborne) allowing James and Harding freedom to attach, or pull one wing back out of midfield and move the other three left or right depending to give us four at the back and if we are really under the cosh we can even play five at the back! Given that, we can play two mobile central mid-fielders (Hammond and Spiderman perhaps) and three attackers (Lambert, Lallana and Connolly). We can switch this to 4-4-2 as well by dropping Lallana back in to slot vacated by the wing back who has gone to full back. Now that to me looks strong yet flexible as well talented. On top of that we do not know who else is coming in .... I am going to trust a management team that has four experienced guys who have all managed clubs before to select the targets they want ahead of some of the narrow minded, opinionated, know-alls that are very quick to judge but lack that experience. Thank you!

Professor Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Looks a good signing with a lot of Exeter fans sorry to see him go. For Saints to get him with three other clubs in for him, including Forest and Leicester, shows that the professional scouts rate him. A left-sided CB will give great balance to the defence and make the team less dependent on the aging legs of Jaidi and Perry who, lets be honest, have a great future but all behind them. sidthesquid Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 I would have thought he was just the type of hungry young pro we should be signing to build for the future. Good signing for a sensible fee & wage ( I hope) as we build steadily. I'm sure I'll think of an example of what happens when a club over-reaches itself financially, paying silly fees & wages for so-called stars....... del boy Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 FFS people give him a chance! We now have a young solid defender on the books that probably cost pittance, we're looking at building a "Squad" that can cope with a sh1tload of fixtures till the end of the season. Beyond this season we won't see the likes of Perry/Jaidi/Thomas around for much longer. A decent squad signing and we haven't finished yet so why don't people stop whinging and give the lad a chance, also wait until the window has shut then we can analyse the transfer and whinge if need be! +1 ...good summary

SNSUN Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 I already feel sorry for the lad - Saints seemingly being linked with League One marquee signings (I mean players too good for this league) and then along comes Seaborne. I hope he proves the knockers wrong and becomes a solid signing for us. He's only 22, so while he's not young young, he's still got ages left in his career to improve. I did go to the Exeter game, but didn't have him on my radar so I don't know what he's like. Good cover if nothing else. Welcome Dan.
SFC Forever Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 When this season started we would all have been happy to be where we are now. We have progressed and in my eyes I think we have progressed quite quickly. We may not make the playoffs this time around but I bet a pound to a pinch of sh1t you will find it nigh on impossible to get a price on us making it next season as champions. AP has done fairly well and I only have one minor criticism of him. I feel that he is a bit too cautious. Leeds and Colchester could both have been beaten if we had taken the game to them earlier. IMHO of course. Overall I trust him to provide us with a winning team and believe we will happily be cheering the RED and WHITES home next season. mcjwills Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 FFS When will people on this site, give a player a chance, it's not very welcoming to him to slag him off before he has even pulled on the shirt, I'm upset that we haven't signed the Brazilian back four, but realistically they are not going to sign for a league 1 club. So Welcome Dan, looking forward to you proving all the idiots on here wrong.
wightman35 Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 Being prepared to give someone a chance and being disappointed by their signing can both happen. Well, Hypo, I reckon that you have been given a lot of grief for expressing a reasonable OPINION that many of your critics did not care to read carefully and understand. My view is slightly different from your though, in that I am pleased we have signed him, but hopefully not paid too much; thinking that AP must feel that Seabourne CDAJFU. It is a little disappointing IMO that we have not completed a signing comparative to Fonte, but I hope that there will soon be news (maybe Ward, Stock, Danns, Jackson or anyone who has or not had pages of thread on this forum?) to make us all drool in excitement! Chez Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 (edited) http://www.exeweb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36509 some very mixed reviews in there - which fully supports hypchondriac's hesitancy. Although the balanced opinion from what I can see is that he is a genuine tough ballwinner, that makes the odd mistake, hoofs it too much and is at his best when he just wins the ball and gives it short to someone a shed load better on the ball - sounds very much like Trottman to me. Although one or two suggest that he can pass and wouldn't get int he side if he didn't. Let's hope so. Might be a good time to think about what a thread on here would look like if one of our centre backs was leaving and the kind of posts you'd get on there, cos if it was Perry off you'd get lots of good and plenty of **** from me and one or two others, Thomas would get lots of **** and a fair bit of not too bad, Lancashire would get nearly all **** with the spattering of give him time from me and others. derry Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 For a number of seasons we have been really light at the back and vulnerable to crosses especially with a keeper that doesn't dominate. I have looked on with envy at most teams tough, uncompromising central defenders usually bought on the cheap or free transferred in and wondered why we never get in that sort of player. Now we have brought one in to replace a Preston reserve, of course he is going to play with the added bonus of being naturally left sided. Martin and Lancashire are work in progress and deserve the time to develop, Jaidi and Perry need rotational assistance and Pardew obviously doesn't rate Thomas. We are looking at a lot of games coming up and the centre of defence is vital. Fonte is high class and will play, Seaborne has proved he is the uncompromising defender we need to get stuck in. I thought the two Exeter centre backs looked pretty tough against us in a ten man team and gave nothing away. A right back would give us a regular miserly back four including adequate cover for rotation and injuries. We also on a regular basis need to play four naturally left sided players (which we haven't yet got) to provide balance. For too long we have made do with one or two, where we want to go that won't work.

I look forward to seeing him at the Den if he plays. I'm getting that feeling too. From the sounds of it, he wasn't the most popular player for them, despite how well he plays. Perhaps the comparison in out team is Morgan, a player with obvious talent but because of his tendancy to drift out of games or just do the simple things well, is criticised on messageboards such as this. We can only judge this player from seeing him with our own eyes. He's tall, and thus should solidify us during set pieces, and with regards to the hoofing, we have just signed a CB that is happy to play the ball, so I'm not too concerned with that side of his game either. They're happy with the rumoured amount of money sent to St James Park, and I think it's a snip. We can throw money around left, right and centre at players this window, but Seaborne has been a relatively cheap acquision, and I'm confident we'll be seeing him playing well, and making the transfer fee worthwhile.
