I get the 'inside dope' from Billy the Shoe Shine Kid on the corner of 5th and Main. He ain't sayin' nothin' unless you slip him a 20.

Whatever he told you, it wasn't true.

Anyway, I was drunk, so were they, it was dark, could have happened to anyone.

I sent the Sports Desk an email last week because they were obviously unaware of the Dec 31st cutoff for bookings and were saying in the Echo/Pink that Schneiderlin was suspended and others on four bookings were facing suspension. I pointed them at the FA rulebook.

That they were unaware of the rules I thought was crass. Needless to say I didn't get a reply but they haven't mentioned it since.

This is exactly what happens when Hockey players get involved in Football.:D

I want the Echo to get the SPORTS ECHO (not 'The Pink' - FFS have hated that since they changed it) - back to printing it early Sat evening so it's fresh to pick up on the way back from games...

Danny...have a word with Murray will ya?

It might seem trivial but you used to buy the Sports Echo and learn something...now, as it feels when you read it, it's just a rehash of the week's stories in the normal Echo...with a match report added.

I know, sentimental old git but older fans will catch my (non-snowlike) drift.

Oh another thing. I'd like to park at Unigate again. Someone have a word with Bob Stock please...(all ex-Tyro players might remember...)

It is still printed on Saturday evening and in some parts of town you can still buy it then. The fact that it doesn't get sent out to everywhere until Sunday is something that can't be affected by the editorial staff, I'm afraid!

Still, you should buy it - else you'll miss out on my fantastic Saints column! ;)

Always a good place to get away quick when you stayed to the final whistle.

By the way if you don't like the Echo dont buy it, its only a provinical newspaper, not a national daily or a sports channel FFS

Initially I thought that the ban on the Echo seemed harsh, as the story about the training ground plans was already out in the public domain by the time they went to print. After reading the Lambert article this moring I was seething with the Echo! I am glad somebody started this thread, because if they hadn't I would've done! The Echo was quite clearly mischief making with that Lambert article, it was based on nothing other than a **** stirring agenda that they have after being banned from St Marys by Cortese. That article was trying to manufacture a situation, it was certainly not based on any facts. The article IMO was trying to unsettle Lambert and F-U-C-K the club off!!! The article was NOT IN THE INTEREST OF SFC OR ITS FANS!!! I expect to see the Echo with that '**** stirring' spoon in their hand plenty more times yet. If i read anymore articles like that i will stop buying the Echo, and I would encourage others to do the same.

The Echo is full of crap and misinformation on a daily basis, but that Lambert stuff really ****ed me off no end. In no possible way could they argue that 'story' was in the interests of any local readers, it was such a load of guff and ****-stirring.

Can any Echo reps on here please tell the people on their Sports Desk that this stuff isn't needed.

I guess the main problem is that people expect more thoroughness from a newspaper. Rumours fly around here from time to time but they are often taken with a considerable pinch of salt as we don't know who is passing on the rumour. You only have to see the number of people questioning whether the posters are ITK to see that.

Whether it's right or wrong, stories in a newspaper always carry a bit more weight. It's as if we believe the journalist actually has gone that bit further than the folks here (who could be just anyone) because they are professionals. It's ok to comment in the story that it's just a rumour but it doesn't stop some extra creedance being given to what is just an internet rumour.

Now I don't really care much what the Echo or other papers publish but it does beggar the question of what we actually can believe if they're rehashing information which we've rehashed off 606 which has actually been made up by someone with nothing better to do. It reminds me of the Bangladeshi newspaper which ran a story about how Neil Armstrong had admitted the moon landings were fake. The problem? Their information came from The Onion, the spoof internet newspaper. Oops.

This sort of story only widens the gap between club and paper. I've got a feeling that if NC is wound up enough Mr Murray and co will really regret the loss of RL.

I would suggest that back then the reason you learnt something new is because this forum wasn't around to give you the week's news. There's very little of fact that's going to get past people here (as well as a lot of fiction), so what exactly do you expect the handful of people in Echo Towers to uncover every week between the time a match ends and going to print?

This is exactly right.

Newspapers around the globe are becoming an endangered species because we are living in a new world of instant communication. This enables non-journalists to share what they know, and it enables sites like this to effectively function as newspapers when it comes to breaking news.

Newspapers no longer have the monopoly position in news and news-breaking that they once had, and their advertising revenues reflect that.

Tac-tics, my old mate, cut a dying breed a little slack. Today, newspapers are the followers, not the leaders. And Nicola knows it! ;)

they did it again about the non signing of Ward - clearly mentioning NC's name and spinning a line that SFC acted poorly.

I still get it on Sunday morning, It used to be in Totton with all the days local results and write ups by 6-15pm on Saturday. It was a great read.

Now the Echo is yesterdays news but it used to come out in various late editions with that days news.

Well Danny, who on the editorial staff penned the crap about bookings and suspensions without bothering to check accuracy? That was a bit of lazy made up journalism.

I have no idea (I don't work on the sports desk and I'm not entirely sure where/when the story was), but I would say that rather than being 'lazy made-up journalism' it was - perhaps - an honest mistake? It may have even been written by someone on work experience.

I don't know who you emailed but the sport desk get hundreds of emails everyday, so it is possible that yours got passed over. I wouldn't take it too personally if I were you.

Adam Leitch for one on the Luton match report in the Pink, the pre-match Echos and the following week's Echos.

I'm not taking it personally, but as I spend about £150 a year on Echos, I'm beginning to think the people on here have a point. If customers get disillusioned with the Echo, it won't do the Echo any good.

I wasn't holding my breath for a reply as I have a pretty poor opinion of the editorial attitude with regard to customer service.

I'm not going to comment on the work of a friend and colleague - but I will say, hand on heart, Adam is anything but lazy.

Football fans are never happy with their local papers - I've learnt that over my years both working as a journalist and being a football fan even longer - so it can be difficult to weed out genuine constructive criticism from the people who just like having a rant and a moan. I'm sure the other Saints fans I know on this forum who work in the media (none of them work locally) will back me up on that.

I'm sorry you don't like the service, but if the mistake hasn't been repeated, I can only assume you've got what you wanted when you emailed in originally.

Now, I only commented on this thread as I was personally being called a 'lazy journalist' (ironically, it is that name that you get called, regardless of what it is you've done, which I think is a rather lazy insult!). However, if you want to have a go at what I've done, please feel free - I'll try and explain what I've done and why as best I can (although admittedly, I don't write loads about Saints by any stretch of the imagination) but I won't be drawn into a debate about anything else regarding the Echo - it would be unprofessional of me to do so.

I hope you'll all understand, but I'll only comment about the stuff that has my name on it. I think that's fair enough.

I wonder if the Monday Echo go back to having a genuine report on the match, rather than Adam Leitch filling paragraphs with a fairly dull 'angle' on Saints that doesn't really provide anything useful for fans, regardless of whether they were at the game or not.

Football fans will certainly never be happy with their local papers if they print any more stuff like the Lambert nonsense! That wasn't just lazy journalism (as is the Echo norm), it was pure ****-stirring.

As a reporter who dabbles in a bit of footie reporting on a weekly paper, I can say that even at the level of a very poorly-supported Blue Square South club, football fans are a right bunch of moaners. I was once lambasted by the club's press officer for announcing a (relatively) big name signing and then slagged off on a fans' forum for putting it in jeopardy.

However, the public in general can be just as bad. There are a lot of armchair journalists out there.....

Thats fine, and if you read my first post on this thread you will see a measured defence of your news item.

My remark about yellow cards is a genuine criticism, as I expect people who pontificate at length and purport to be a football expert, to at least know the basic framework of the disciplinary system they are commenting on. Accuracy is important but doesn't come without studying the detail of the subject which obviously didn't happen.

On Wednesday the OS posted an injury update on Jaidi's eye injury and that they expected him to be out for about two weeks.

This morning the Echo are running a lead article commenting that Pardew now has a dilemma whether to drop either Jaidi or Perry to accommodate either Fonte or Seaborne.

With Jaidi injured there is no dilemma or choice to be made unless both of the new players are picked to play.

It is obvious from the article that the Echo are unaware of Jaidi's injury. The readers of the Echo who expect facts not conjecture are being misled by this lazy journalism.

OK, the club isn't talking to them, but it doesn't stop them checking the OS for accuracy before running a story.

There really is no excuse for this shoddy journalism. They don't get any direct information from the club now and it shows.

Although the fact that the injury was overlooked the dilemma in question is quite interesting

It has been known for a few days now that he was injured. Pardew said so in an interview and was also on the website. I think that counts as lazy journalism. The ban didn't stop this from being known at the Echo as it has been known for days on the Saints OS and Saints player.

Good news.

1. Boxers or y-fronts?

2. Worn in bed or not worn in bed?

3. Changed daily or less often?

4. Favourite colour?

5. Purchased by yourself or someone else?

6. Name written in with pen or sewn in?

Boxers but Y front gives that extra level of manliness.

Worn, provided it's not too hot.

Daily. Ish.

Something floral.

Me although will happily accept gifts.

Sewn in for that extra touch of class.
