Genuine Memorabilia?

I'm the proud owner of a copy of "The Alphabet of the Saints", a book that Duncan co-authored with Gary Chalk which contains profiles and some photos of all players that had played for Saints up until it was written in 1992.

Scanning through looking for players from that era I came across this for Arthur Hughes (forward 1908-09).

"...signed for the Saints in the summer of 1908 to act as cover for George Smith but, within a few weeks, Smith was to die tragically and Arthur took his place on a pre-season European tour. A series of outstanding games including a hat-trick against The Hague ..."

I know that The Hague is in the Netherlands which is not Scandanavia but it would seem quite likely that they may also have included Scandanavia on their tour.

Looking at the photos it's possible that George Smith (the one who died!) is the person shown on the badge in the centre of the back row but I can't be sure. The player with the moustache could be John Bainbridge (forward 1907-10) but again, it's hard to be certain.

Of course, none of this proves whether the badge is genuine or not.

.

The Hague is approx 1000 miles from Copenhagen. In 1908 that would have been a huge journey to undertake.....

Yeah, mine are roughly the same date too (50s-60s, I think), but I can't afford to cough £150 on a badge, no matter how old. At least we know there's something out there from waaaay back. I'll just cut and paste the piccy - much cheaper!!

Out of interest, could you post a pic of your earliest badges so that I can see what I've got. I've picked mine up along the way and never spent much over £5-£10 for them. I've got about 30.

yes sure, will do in the morning mate, if you could let me know how to post pictures! simple instructions please as i'm computer illiterate!

Do you mean kilometers rather than miles? Freedom-tour.com shows it as 960 km (597 miles) driving distance. Admittedly that would still have been a fair way in those days.

I've just noticed the earlier posting where the seller claims the tour was in 1910 so perhaps it was a different tour anyway (assuming what he says is true).

I will send you this as a PM as well so you can print it out if you want.

Ok.

1. Click on User CP on the toolbar

2. Click on 'Picture & Albums' in the menu

3. Click on 'add album'.

4. Give the album a title in the top box.

5. Click on 'Submit'.

You now have an album to put your pics into.

6. A new window will open prompting you to 'click here to upload pictures'. Do so.

Pesumably the pics you want will be stored on your computer in a folder.

7. Click on 'Browse' and find your picture.

8. Click on the picture and it's address will automatically appear in the box.

9. Click on 'upload pictures'. If the picture will not upload it is because it is too large. If so, downsize it and resave. then upload again using steps 6-9.

10. Click on 'save changes' in the Edit window which you will see when the upload has taken place.

11. Your new folder window will now open and you will see your pic image.

12. Click on the image.

13. Another window will open with two text boxes below, containing the text addresses of your images. Highlight one or other by right clicking on it. (I tend to use the BB code box, the lower of the two).

14. A drop down menu will appear on the screen. Click on 'copy'.

Now you can return to the forum thread and in the 'reply' text box, click on 'go advanced' then, in the text box, right click again and the same drop-down menu will appear as before. Left click on 'paste'.

The text address of your image will appear in the text box. If you then click on the 'preview post' button you will see how the image will look in your post.

Add any text that you want to.

Finally click on 'submit reply' and your post will appear as per normal in the thread.

Hope this works ok for you. It sounds long-winded but once you've done it a few times it becomes second nature. :)

On the picture of the badge, click 'enlarge' then press 'CTRL' and '+' on you rkeyboard, each click enlarges the window, and to reduce it back press 'CTRL' and '-'

You'll get a pretty close up view that way.

I am regularly outbid by a certain toadhall saint, i know you claim this is not you but its a BIG coinidence. (-;

I'm not toadhall Saint on ebay (similar but not Toadhall Saint) if I've outbid you it would have been a while ago mate. I keep an eye out for older ones but not as much as I used to. The one you were interested in on here didn't really interest me as its not a "Coffer" style.

So who won it then? Raysfc is another name that springs to mind! or maybe there are others, perhaps even a general collector of football badges and not even a Saints fan! hope not!

I know who bought it and he's a saints fan and has got a bargain. This is incredibly rare - in fact the first I ever seen.

Definately genuine. I have seen a similar one produced for the 1902 FA Cup Final.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Sorry, forgot to add the badge was made to commemorate with us reaching the 1908 FA Cup semi-final when Wolves beat us 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Afer that our 10 years of being one of the top clubs in the country went into decline.

Glad it was a Saints fan.... keep trying to get time to post a few from my collection on this thread, hopefully tomorrow or sunday.

Do you collect badges FF perhaps you could post a few pics, or the fella who bought the said badge?

I used to collect all sorts of memorabilia but I sold it apart from my photo archive.

The guy who bought this badge and I are thinking about bringing out some sort of book on Saints memorabilia and like I said he has quite a few going back to the beginning of the last century. Cheers

Any chance of the club opening a saints museum? Doesn't have to be open all week, it might be popular on matchdays.
