Knees

Popped my right knee out today, and although I managed to pop it back in again and I can walk on it now (although a bit gingerly) it's still pretty sore and it almost feels like it's going to pop out again when I stand up from sitting down. Obviously the soreness is to be expected, but i'm not sure about it almost coming out again. I popped my left knee out a couple of times before but not done it for about two years, and they seemed to sort themselves out without a trip to the doctor's, but they were a case of popping it back in and it was okay again. Do you reckon this is worth a trip to the doctor's?

Thanks!

Probably.

How old are you and are you going through a bit of a growth spurt? I don't want to be patronising but it's not uncommon for tendons and ligaments to get over-stretched in teenage lads hitting a growth patch. If it swells up, I'd definitely get down the GP's but if it's ok in the morning I expect I'd forget it.

Turned 18 last month, so I guess that fits your description. I'm not overly worried about it, it's just not a very pleasant thing to have happen to you when you're at work! Might ring up the GP in the morning and see if he thinks it's worth a look anyway. Thanks guys!

That sounds like one serious game of hokey cokey.

P.S. I would like to put my name forward as the new medical mod. Do I get my own room?

I'd go & get it checked, cant do you any harm. I've had trouble with my left knee playing football as a youngster about your age, I tackled someone straight legged & it popped out but popped straight back in. from then I had it a few times, but it never came out completely. So I left it, but a couple of years ago I twisted my knee & it came out completely. Had to go to hospital to get it put back in. They said that my knees had a tendency to push to the outside, but physio has sorted that by excersise's designed to strengthen the tendons/ligaments on the inside to pull it the right way. So I'd go as your knees seem to have a similar tendancy, you may solve it with physio.

Sorry to have to break it to you, but there is no known cure. You could try dyeing it, but the roots will eventuelly show through. You could shave it off, but agian it will eventually grow back.

Not sure what else I can suggest, try not to be too down about it though, I know some people who have been ginger all of their lives and they seem to live relatively normal lives.

Let us know how you get on though.

PS

Do you have a care manager yet? I could refer you to one.

Update (because I know you were all so concerned)

Doctor was bloody useless, just told me to keep off it and keep taking Ibuprofen, which is what I was doing anyway. 20 minute walk through 5 inches of snow to hear what I already knew...

The knee is actually sorer today than it was yesterday, and it's swollen up more which is affecting my walk. While I could walk relatively normally with a slight limp yesterday, now I can barely put much weight on my right leg at all. But hey, i'll do what the doctor says and if things don't improve i'll go back.

Did he tell you about REST? Rest, Ice (or frozen peas), Compression and Elevation? That would get the swelling down.

Ibuprofen ffs!! I swear they're on commission!!

I had this problem with a finger tendon injury. I was warned I'd be fobbed off with pain-killers so within 24 hours I made another appointment at the docs. I said it wasn't working and requested a referral to the physio dept of my local hospital where a specialist looked at it and I was given a good course of physio which sorted it.

Best of luck

Has similar dislocation in my youth, pushing your knee cap round from the side was rather gruesome!. All they could recommend to me at the time was to try to build the muscles up. Not that I really did but luckily it stopped happening with age.

I too had a dislocation in my youth. Now I'm a heartless, power-hungry City trader with a £2k/week coke habit and a breast fixation. Get it checked out early is my advice.

Obviously the long term effects are not totally consistent as, of those, I only have the breast fixation.

RICE?

Yeah RICE

You MUST demand a referral to a physio. I remember tearing my hamstring and the GP trying to fob me off with pain killers. When I insisted on going to a physio, she asked me how I knew I'd torn my hamstring. I told her I heard it rip.

When I got to the physio (that same day) he said how good it was I'd got there so quickly as the longer you leave an injury, the worse it can get.

Actually Clapham it could be REST:

Rest

Elevation

Stuff from the freezer

Tight bandage

:D

  • 3 months later...

I popped mine out 7 weeks ago while playing football. I had to have it put back in by the doctor after going to hospital in an ambulance. I was then in plaster (it was red and white for wembley) followed by a splint which has just come off. I am now having physio and still am off work and on crutches. I suggest you go to the docs to see if any of the ligaments are damaged. If you dont get them sorted then it will keep coming out.

Well, it went straight back in after coming out, but it has swollen up considerably and I can't really walk on it very well, probably won't be able to walk on it in the morning. Meant to be going out clubbing for a mate's 18th tomorrow, don't think that's happening somehow :(

I'll go and see the doc about it tomorrow, because it's ridiculous now. I have the knees of a 300 year old.

It it dont feel right, then get it checked. Knee injuries are a complete pain and the sooner you get it sorted the better.

I did my ACL last year and i didnt sort it even though i did it a year before. Not worth carrying on at 50% coz it will keep happening.

in other news, i have now been discharged after ACL reconstruction in August!

Apparently i will be ok for pre-season training in august/september, but to be honest, it scares the bejeesus outa me

Congrats on that one mate, ACL is a nasty f*cker. Take it easy, because if you do it again then that's you royally f*cked.

Well i guess next time would be a hamstring graft, having already had the Patella graft first time! Would not want to go through that again that is for sure, hence the worry about playing again. Will never wear blades ever ever again. Pretty sure they were part of the issue tbf.

How's yours now?

Think if I did that more than once i'd just stop playing! ;)

Been resting it all day, meant to be out for a mate's 18th in town right now but instead i'm in bed playing Football Manager :(

It's not as bad as last time, but I think there might be some muscle/ligament damage because that area is very sore and tender.

Getting it checked out on Monday because the surgery can't be arsed to open at weekends

Request an MRI........I had completely SNAPPED my ACL and i was told at the general that i had strained my knee and to take Ibuprofen and rest for a week, and within 6 weeks i would be back playing football.......that was December 2008....! 2 months later had to go through the doctors to get referred, to get MRI to get to see a specialist. Ideal. Op was August 2009. Just 8months after the original 'incident'
