Badger Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Very true, when I was in Portugal and Boa Morte was playing for us, the locals refered to him as Bo A Mort. Whereas in a Hampshire dialect it sounded more like 'useless c^nt'.
Minty Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Maybe this'll help... I've not read it, but if someone has time to kill, go for it...! http://www.learningportuguese.co.uk/pronunciation/
CWD Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Well, I think it's JosAY Font personally. José Fonte has an accent above the 'e' in José and not in Fonte. This leads me to believe they should be pronounced differently. i speak spanish. You always pronounce the e at the end of a word as 'ay', the accent merely specifies where the word should be accentuated if it is not the second to last syllable. portuguese is the same. therefore his name is JosAY FONtay HTH

I'm sure there are general rules, as in English, but they're seldom hard and fast.

Matthew Le God Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Portuguese and spanish are two different languages though Very similar languages.
John B Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 They're completely different, tbh. For example, the 'J' in Spanish would be pronounced as an 'H'. In Portuguese it's pronounced as a hard 'J'. Yes my Portugese Barber is Jose is pronounced Joessay
Legod Third Coming Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Yes my Portugese Barber is Jose is pronounced Joessay To be fair though he's probably like most Italian waiters, and actually from Dagenham!
RonManager Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Does he have a social network page that someone can ask him? - or would that be no fun
Um Bongo Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 (edited) Does he have a social network page that someone can ask him? - or would that be no fun I've pinged him a message on FB. I guess whoever updates his page will let me know. Will it not be like Mourinio? Edited 10 January, 2010 by Um Bongo
suewhistle Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 I think the 30k + on Boxing day will have made ML smile - just got to keep it up! They no doubt already had plans, but it must have been a confirmation of our potential. What do we reckon the crowd will be for the next home game (whenever the weather lets it get played)?
Red&White Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 To be fair though he's probably like most Italian waiters, and actually from Dagenham! Portugal......Italy ? Hmmmmm:rolleyes:

I'm sure there are general rules, as in English, but they're seldom hard and fast. Jaime is pronounced Hi may, the driver in question has it pronounced hi mee coz its a bit of a nickname. In fact its the direct equivalent of using Jaymo as a nickname of Jamie But i do agree that maybe we should just ask Fonte how you pronounce it!
Right sider Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Only this forum could have a debate on pronounciation, grammar or spelling (sp?) ;-)
SNSUN Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 We most need a Right Back. Gary Neville is out of contract and still pondering on whether or not he can still hack it in the Premier, if he doesn't sign for Manure, then why not? I'd be suprised if he goes anywhere. Always seemed like a one club man, I think he'd rather retire than drop through the leagues, despite what Fergie says. He has become too injury prone too, which would put him on the same footing as Murty. We have James who, despite having his doubters, can do the job there until we can sign a competent replacement.
Smirking_Saint Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Very similar languages. Similar but different
Legod Third Coming Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Only this forum could have a debate on pronounciation, grammar or spelling (sp?) ;-) Well can you imagine how irritating it will be to have a song about you and for the fans not even to get your name right
kpturner Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 Only this forum could have a debate on pronounciation, grammar or spelling (sp?) ;-)I think you mean pronunciation ;-)
SFC Forever Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 We will know soon enough how to say his name. Like after the Millwall game when he is given the mom award. someone will know.
Matthew Le God Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 We will know soon enough how to say his name. Like after the Millwall game when he is given the mom award. someone will know. Dave Merrington?
Legod Third Coming Posted 10 January, 2010 Posted 10 January, 2010 The boy Joes Fonty! LMAO! Has to be said in a Geordie accent that...
SaintRobbie Posted 11 January, 2010 Posted 11 January, 2010 Portuguese and spanish are two different languages though Where's Javi when we need him?
Foxstone Posted 11 January, 2010 Posted 11 January, 2010 In signing Fonte, a very marked statement of intent has been indicated by ML and NC. It is seldom for a Div 1 club to invest big money (relative to position) on a higher division player and one can safely assume that Fonte has bought the vision of where the club wants to go to drop a division. Cracking piece of business all round.
St.Patrik Posted 11 January, 2010 Posted 11 January, 2010 http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/tn/Sport.cfm?id=680&headline=Jose Good read I think.
hypochondriac Posted 11 January, 2010 Posted 11 January, 2010 http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/tn/Sport.cfm?id=680&headline=Jose Good read I think. To read the full interview with Fonte - and our guide to who else could leave the Eagles this month - don't miss tomorrow's South London Press. That made me lol. Why would the selling point of a newspaper be that you want to find out who else you are going to sell?

I expect they'll buy it for a laugh!
Blandford saint Posted 11 January, 2010 Posted 11 January, 2010 Interesting bit was the link to who readers thought had been the best player at Palace this season - 30% chose Fonte, next best Ambrose on 27%.
