We are Man City of League 1 - its now official!

1.2 million seems alot for a L1 CB signing - looks very flash when you consider Norwich got Zak Whitbread for next to nothing.

Cant complain though.

wonder how much he went for, also I wonder how the wages compare.

anyone capable of comparing the two in terms of quality?

Fonte has played 2 seasons regular in the chamionship and has been one of the top players at that level - Zak has been good at L1 level (never played in the champ) but very injury prone.

I think (from what all the palace fans are saying) that Fonte is a very cultured centre half, he started his career as a striker/attacker - so has very nice ability on the ball and can set attacks going from the back.

Any man who can choke on his own crunchy nuts doesn't really need to go out...

lol, neat Bill Hicks reference there....."girlfriend was going down on me, she suddenly stopped...I said whaaaaat?? she says, well, did you ever try it? I said yes, I almost broke my back. And if you women in the audience think your guy doesnt know what Im talking about, trust me, if guys could blow themselves you ladies would be sitting out there alone right now...watching an empty stage" :D

superb signing btw

is that a good thing? Is there anything else these days?

Depends if we've enabled him to 'arrive' or if he sees us getting him there I guess. I would like people to be playing for pride or love, but I think those days are long gone...

2 seasons regular yes, but CCC top players? Says who?

Well the majority of palace fans seem to think he could hack it in the premiership, they're probably better placed than most of us to judge his ability. They're even saying he's in their top 3 ''best ever'' centre backs..

he's not just an average championship player.

Probably one of those nutters who thinks Schneiderlin is the best midfielder in League One.

I think this is a real signal of intent. Not just for us but to our other targets too. It shows that we are serious and dont plan on being in L1 longer than this season. It appears to me that ML and NC have recognised that we are capable of making the play offs and are giving AP the tools to give us the best chance. Exciting times.

One of the funniest comedians ever, sadly missed.

Great news, especially considering the media reports stating that he had turned us down, not wanting to leave London. Perhaps ML put his private jet at his disposal. ;) Frankly, that part didn't ring true anyway, as we are only an hour away from London and there can always be an argument made that the quality of life is better down here depending on what one is looking for.

I loved the rather barbed remark at the end of the piece on the OS saying that it was only from the OS that the true and immediate information could be obtained first. It sounded as if they wanted to conclude by saying na-na-na-na-na.

you suggested he would be a signing or at least that HCDAJFU. I believe Danns was also one you tipped, right?

im well pleased with this signing, my mate is a palace fan he his gutted about him leaving, though did say he likes to have a massive error every so often but 99% of the time he is solid

already..if we dont go up this year...auto promotion next season is simply the minimum..

no pressure

many city of league 1...the spending is "sick"

I'm struggling to tell how you actually feel about these signings... you only seem to comment on the money being spent and the expectation as a result... are you actually pleased we've made this signing?!?!

I like this toast from a Palace fan:

"Every time I take a glass of port going forward instead of saying cheers I will lift my Glass and shout Jose!"

I've also just finished reading the threads on the Palace fans' site too, including the appreciation thread. It is indeed rare to have total agreement from all posters that he is a big loss for them. When one of our players has gone elsewhere in the past, there is always a faction that responds by saying that they were crap. I can't recall one single post saying that about him.

just been doing some digging...

most of their fans are gutted....they say he is already the best defender in league 1 by a mile...good header/tackler and is pretty neat at distributing the ball and is young..

they reckon after a few games in the team we will see his quality....

also one of thie "ITK" say the deal is like this..

£800k Upfront

£400k If Saints go up within 3 Year term of his contract

£100k after 50 Games.

5% Sell on Clause

By all accounts, top, top player. Pretty much shouldn't be anywhere near this league so it's a bit a coup, i'd say! I don't think there are too many Palace fans saying "glad he's gone" which is always a sign of quality.

I still feel there's room for Ward too. Didn't someone post about Thomas perhaps leaving soon too?

Excellent signing by the management. Always good to make signings that can just walk into an already good team.

I note the little 'dig' at the Echo at the end of the press release , Nicola Cortese is seemingly not a chap to be crossed lightly .

As for Jose Fonte I can't add much to what everyone else has already said but add my own welcome to this great club and make the obvious observation that we will almost certainly be paying him more than Palace have been (in a division above us) and our club must be running a (near) CCC level wage bill on a L1 income . This is no problem as long as the owner is prepared to keep the cash taps open but should that stream of money ever dry up for any reason we could find ourselves in trouble again one day .

We really have to be promoted this season or next with this relatively expensive squad we are building - or Mr Liebherr will start to find a lot of red ink on the SFC annual accounts before very long I fear .

Next is no good. It will just get harder as teams realise who/what we are and as we are joined by three more decent clubs from above.

We are a relegated club this year with Charlton and Norwich - look how much better we are.

Next year there will be three more... and at least one of Norwich, Charlton and Leeds.

Delldays, sometimes when I read some of your posts I get the impression that a big black cloud hovers above your head and follows you about everywhere you go.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of your beliefs and some of the thing's you post, I am in agreement with, just think you should stop being so defensive and cynical at times.

I'd be concerned having to in the trenches with you, with some of the things you write on here, I get the feeling that you might be bad for morale. I can just imagine a tense stand off with the enemy in a war, we are surrounded by the enemy and we just need to dig in and stand our ground as we await back up and then I hear you say something along the lines of "Oh well, we might as well just kill ourselves now as we'll be dead anyway soon"

Feel free to have a dig back, i'll understand and I don't mean anything malicious to you - just wished you'd chill a litttle at times:D

As for the signing - well it shows that we are looking to go up this season, rather than looking to just settle for mid-place and go for it next season. Also, Fonte seems to think that being here is the path of least resistance to the Premiership. If he's ambitious, then that's good with me and although he's on big wages, relatively speaking, he seems to want to be here for the right reason and if we do go up this season then his wages will be comparable with other Championship clubs anyway.

He's not injury prone and we need someone who is going to be a leader in defence and finally make us a good, solid defensive unit. Once we have that, then I think we will rise further and have enough in attack to secure a play-off spot.

Disagree... the league this season is much stronger than what it will be next season. Assuming we dont get promoted and leeds + norwich get automatic... i would then predict one of charlton, colchester or hudersfield to take the last place...

Coming down will be maybe Peterbrough, Plymouth, Sheff Weds (as it is at the moment)

I feel that the three teams going up are significantly stronger than those coming down (of course these are only predictions)... making League 1 10/11 a weaker league than this season. And if saints continue to build as we are, we 'should' mount a very serious tital challenge next season.
