beatlesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Excellent. I assume Ward is a no go now then is he ?
ozzmeister Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Looks like a good signing - seems a better optio than Trotters
beatlesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Looks like a good signing - seems a better optio than Trotters Yes, although if cheap enough I would still pick him up as back-up.
Saint Charlie Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 I think Pards will still want Want, what a pair they would be, with Jaidi also in the mix.
Draino76 Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 A very good start to the day. What next? An accumulator win? A BJ? Neil Danns?
beatlesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 A very good start to the day. What next? An accumulator win? A BJ? Neil Danns? A Right Back please !
Saints Warrior Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Good one, someone who has been playing football recently (vs ipswich) and not out of practice.
beatlesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 I assume he can play in the JPT Southern Final then
sussexsaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Author Posted 9 January, 2010 Another genuine statement of intent, clearly we are expecting playoffs or at least going for them all guns blazing
Pilchards Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 "Don't get me wrong , I was happy at Crystal Palace and I had a good spell there. I have only good things to say to the fans and everybody I have worked with at the club. "But I've made a decision and I'm very happy with it. I've come here with a purpose which is to help this club move to the top divisions. "I'm very happy with this contract, and with how Southampton have treated me, so it's a happy day for me and I just want to help the club. I want to play in the Premier League and I think I can do that quickest by moving here."
Ewell Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 I have never heard of him and I have no idea what he is like. Palace's defensive record whilst not amazing is reasonable. I just hope he is no Marco Almeida! Fare play to the chap for dropping down a division though but I guess money talks! I particularly like this quote! I want to play in the Premier League and I think I can do that quickest by moving here

JRM Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 yes but the bad news is he is cup tied in the FA Cup!

I just hope he is no Marco Almeida! QUOTE] I think it's a bit strange to compare people because they have the same nationality. A bit like comparing George Weah with Ali Dia !!!
Ewell Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 I think it's a bit strange to compare people because they have the same nationality. A bit like comparing George Weah with Ali Dia !!! As far as I am aware he was the last Portuguese player we had (I could be wrong on this) and they both play in the same position! It was said tongue n cheek and I am sure most will see that. I think living in Scandinavia is having an effect on your sense of humour especially if you are going to bite at that comment!
Saint_Jonny Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Amazing bit of wealing and dealing by Saints! If we can attract QUALITY from a division above like this then we must be looking to finish the season in style, if not this season we will be going up next season! Pardew must will well happy!

Andy_Porter Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Fantastic signing, a ball playing defender was our top priority imo. It should give our team a whole new dimension, actually having a calm head at the back who can pick out a pass and at the same time still being a top defender. I never really rated Trottman so I'm glad we've got Fonte in, 6 months of watching Thomas and Perry playing alongside Jaidi wouldn't have been fun. Massive coup for the club and manager, hopefully we can get in another player or two of his calibre before the deadline. For once the futures bright.
GenevaSaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 A great birthday present for me! We're building a great team and squad, come on lads, lets get into the playoffs :-D
RedAndWhite91 Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Top signing and a great piece of business. Keep it up Pards, Cortese, and everyone concerned. Being a Saints fan at the moment makes me all warm inside.
forever a red and white Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 CB at the 'right age' was just what we needed. But haven't seen much so will wait to make judgement, hoepfully he is exactly what we need, because we desperately need to tighten up, this season or next season's push
musesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Nearly choked on my crunchy nuts when I saw the OS! Great signing
S-Clarke Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Brilliant. If we were a top championship team i'd be chuffed with this signing, but the fact we are in the bottom half of L1 and we've signed him is amazing! It's not like he was out of favour at Palace or anything, he's been their stand out performer this season. It is a HUGE statement of intent, make no doubts about that. I'm so excited, because i don't think it stops here. More top championship players on their way.
beatlesaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Nearly choked on my crunchy nuts when I saw the OS! Great signing If ever there was a line written for a Carry On film thats it
Legod Third Coming Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 If ever there was a line written for a Carry On film thats it Any man who can choke on his own crunchy nuts doesn't really need to go out...
benjii Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 I have never heard of him and I have no idea what he is like. Palace's defensive record whilst not amazing is reasonable. Alistair Dia is from Senegal. Georgie Weah is from Liberia. I think what you've done is seen a colour and confused it with a nationality. Now, that's racist.
Chez Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 "I'm very happy with this contract, and with how Southampton have treated me, so it's a happy day for me..." There was a rumour that we agreed a fee of £1.5m with Palace, but because the player wanted more wages we lowered the fee to £1.2m and gave him the £300,000 instead. I suppose it doesn't make any difference, but its an extra £2k a week on top of a CCC wage. High wage earners cause a problem should they not work out - you can't get rid of them (see Saga, Thomas...) I hope he hasn't just come here for the money (who am I kidding). Actually what I mean is I hope we paying a similar wage to what Palace's did. Palace wanted the cash, he was gently pushed out the door so hopefully we haven't had to pay a premium to get him to drop down a division. I know we have billionaire owners, but we should always keep in mind what has happened down the road.
Legod Third Coming Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Alistair Dia is from Senegal. Georgie Weah is from Liberia. I think what you've done is seen a colour and confused it with a nationality. Now, that's racist. LOL!!! They were cousins. It's only natural to assume that cousins share nationality. I mean in Pompey they share the same wives and parents.
Saint Samuel Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 This news ceratinly makes up for there being no game today. Makes me feel optimistic about the future that a player getting regular first team football is still willing to drop down a division to play for us. Even if money does talk it still goes to show that Pardew and Cortese have their sights set and Liebherr is willing to back them financially. Great bit of news to wake up to on a Saturday morning with a slight hangover!
farawaysaint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Did it say a price? This is what I took off the palace forum £800k Upfront £400k If Saints go up within 3 Year term of his contract £100k after 50 Games. 5% Sell on Clause
bjk Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Good signing pleased with that.I just hope,if we fail to make the play offs this season we can hold on to everyone for next season because hopefully we'll be strong enough to win the league with the squad we'll have.
S-Clarke Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Just watched his video on Saints Player, he does seem happy to have joined - is sad to have left palace, but believes he can get to the premiership at Saints quicker than any other club that were interested. (even though we're in L1) He also said ''i've seen the ambition, i've seen the project, it's a massive project and i want to be part of it.''

(even though we're in L1) He also said ''i've seen the ambition, i've seen the project, it's a massive project and i want to be part of it.'' feels like he was pushed out the door and he wasn't all that fussed about joining us, but we more than matched his wages so that has cheered him up. I hope he falls in love with the club, but at the moment he doesn't strike me as someone that desperately wants to play for us.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 We are Man City of League 1 - its now official! 1.2 million seems alot for a L1 CB signing - looks very flash when you consider Norwich got Zak Whitbread for next to nothing. Cant complain though.
Chez Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 While I don't dispute his motives, money talks... is that a good thing? Is there anything else these days?
CB Saint Posted 9 January, 2010 Posted 9 January, 2010 Great news. Exactly what is required. What's next on the shopping list?
