saint peach Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Press release from club: Saturday’s League One fixture between Southampton and Huddersfield Town has been postponed. The cold snap which has hit the south coast over the last few days means that the pitch at St. Mary’s has had no chance of recovery from the freezing temperatures seen after last weekend’s hosting of Luton Town. Overnight temperatures are forecast to be well below freezing for the next few days, therefore the playing surface and the stadium’s surrounding areas - which are currently treacherous in places - are unlikely to improve. Huddersfield Town were due to leave on Friday morning to make their journey south, so the decision was made as early as possible to avoid any unnecessary travelling by fans and players alike. Delaying any decision is merely putting off the inevitable and would cause inconvenience to many people and companies. This our ninth season at St. Mary’s and this is the first game in that time that we have had to call a match off due to a frozen pitch. The Club has not taken this decision lightly and if there was any chance of playing the fixture then we would be doing our best to do so right up until kick off on Saturday.

Thedelldays Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 in seriousness it is a shame but the first time in 9 years due to the cold and the second time in 9 years a game is lost at SMS...pretty good really I think this could be a blessing in disguise...by all accounts the team have looked tired lately and IMO a rest away from games will be good mentaly..hopefully, we will have a few new additions before the next game
hypochondriac Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I would have thought they would have waited till tomorrow.
hypochondriac Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Having said that, they made this decision a few days ago.
Pancake Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I would have thought they would have waited till tomorrow. Huddersfield squad were planning to travel down tomorrow am by all accounts, so better that the decision was made today.
scott_saints Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Get the fook in. Was gonna miss my first game at sms this season as I'm going to Slovenia for the weekend. Bonus!!
Um Bongo Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Nice week off for the players, get some rest and up for the Millwall Game.
Matthew Le God Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I hope they replace the excited of a match by announcing 3 signings on the OS on Saturday. At 3pm a centre back At 3.45 a striker At 4.45 a midfielder
niceandfriendly Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I'll have to play golf now instead. Hard life ain't it.
sussexsaint Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Still , the perils of Pompey warm the ****les of your heart in these cold and difficult times
saints_is_the_south Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Shame, was looking forward to Sat. Correct decision though especially given their players are meant to be travelling down tomorrow.
The Yeoman of beds Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Excellent news ,didn't fancy the 200 mile round trip in these conditions.
sotonjoe Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 in seriousness it is a shame but the first time in 9 years due to the cold and the second time in 9 years a game is lost at SMS...pretty good really I think this could be a blessing in disguise...by all accounts the team have looked tired lately and IMO a rest away from games will be good mentaly..hopefully, we will have a few new additions before the next game I agree with everything you said. It's worthwhile pointing out how rarely this has happened, like you've done, before people start moaning about why we don't have under soil heating etc. No mention of ticket siaution though. Can we assume that all orginal tickets will remain valid AND we can take a full refund instead if we can't attend the new date? I'm sure this will be the case but it would have been helpful if they'd added that to the annoucement as I'm sure some people won't know what to expect.
NickG Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 But from the club's media department. Trust me, it's true. I did! Just saw it on here, the bbc fixtures, sky first!
brightspark Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Might not want to look at the table on Saturday evening. We would have played a similar amount of matches to everyone else and could well be 13/14 points off the play off places. I think not having a game here puts more pressure on the result at Millwall. If we lose that one we could be close to the bottom 4 again - this COULD cause panic and poor confidence in the team, which would basically ruin any aspirations for play offs this season. However, on the plus side, we haven't been playing that well recently, Huddersfield are a good team for this division, and we might as well play them with a new squad, playing better football (hopefully).
NickG Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I would have thought they would have waited till tomorrow. saves their fans /team travelling
saint peach Posted 7 January, 2010 Author Posted 7 January, 2010 I did! Just saw it on here, the bbc fixtures, sky first! Fair enough
Colinjb Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Kinda relieved as I now don't have a nervous 2 hour trip down on Saturday morning wondering if the game is on or off. Will be tricky making a mid-week re-match though.

Yeah, that's the normal drill for situations like this.

fish fingers Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 A good old fashion door hanging for me now instead.
thorpie the sinner Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Get the fook in. Was gonna miss my first game at sms this season as I'm going to Slovenia for the weekend. Bonus!! where abouts are you going? beautiful country!!
Arizona Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Good news for me, I was going to miss this one through work. Chance the new date will be on my days off.

hypochondriac Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Huddersfield squad were planning to travel down tomorrow am by all accounts, so better that the decision was made today. Fair enough. The decision was still taken about 2-3 days ago. I know someone who does work at SMS who was told they could work Saturday because the game would be off.

Ex Ringwood Saint Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 (edited) Sky ticker suggesting most L1 games off so no worries about the table looking too bad.... make that 4 games..!! Edited 7 January, 2010 by Ex Ringwood Saint Missed the number....
.comsaint Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I guess the upside of the game being off is...by the time it's re-scheduled - we'll have a better team (hopefully); they'll have less supporters; and I might actually fit my Saints shirt as I'm now officially a fat bastid after scoffing my face all Christmas!
paris Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Gives the players a rest which can only be a good thing ..... Also plenty of warning for fans ..
Granadino Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Damn it! Has turned out to be a frustrating month. Since the start of the season I had 2 big weekends planned around the football, with mates who support other teams coming down to watch the game and have a few (many) beers. Those games: Huddersfield and Swindon. Now both postponed and will be rearranged for midweek when the others wont be able to make it! (Probably the right decision though!)
JRM Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 (edited) Pardew should try and take the players away to spain for a training camp for a few days, bit short notice though. what are the indoor facilities like at staplewood? it does mean that players like Jaidi and Connolly who missed the Luton game will not have played for 3 weeks by the time we play Millwall. Strange month now, 1 game in first 15 days, then 5 in the last 16. Edited 7 January, 2010 by JRM
sotonjoe Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Read the "conditions of use" on the back of your ticket and it explains everything! I know the answer Matthew, perhaps I worded the post ineffectively. I was trying to raise the pertinent point that without adding this to the announcement, the ticket office can expect to be fielding telephone calls from a few people throughout the day. It will be a number of calls they could probably have reduced if they'd bothered to put a reminder on the notice.
alpine_saint Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 A weeks rest and healing time. Can only be good. Also the chance to stop the transfer procrastination.
scott_saints Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 where abouts are you going? beautiful country!! DJ'ing for a friend's wedding at Lake Bled. The wedding is in the church on the island with the reception in the castle afterwards. Looks good from the pics I've seen
toofarnorth Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 I'll have to play golf now instead. Hard life ain't it. Get the orange ball out!!!

battlingbob Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 just hope now that the millwall game goes ahead now
Chez Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 weather is no worse than it was at Leeds, but I guess there is more bad stuff on the way so it kinda makes sense. Dissapointed as was looking forward to it. Hopefully it works in our favour as we can get a decent centre back in before we play Huddersfield - which we need badly.
forever a red and white Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 feck, the only good things is the players look drained on saturday. But will probably be back at uni by the time the re-arranged match is on which makes life difficult
sapphireblue Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Well I am still coming down. See you in the Guide Dog at about 1.00!
JRM Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 just hope now that the millwall game goes ahead now yeah lets hope so, i notice Charlton v Hartlepool this weekend is off according to bbc fixtures, and thats only down the road from millwall
Kingsland Red Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 That means another midweek home game - great news for saints supporters involved in Saturday football, as they are few and far between this season.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 7 January, 2010 Posted 7 January, 2010 Oh well...gonna miss the footie so that means more DIY I guess. Or shall I spend my time on FIFA10 climbing out league one? Mmm, choices choices.

Also, I'm sure I read elsewhere this morning that despite not having under soil heating, SMS does in fact have the pipework in place. Anyone know anything of this?
