The Godfather Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 Some of the football is pleasing on the eye and better than last season but defensively we are just as bad as last season and we are struggling to score goals. This equates to only one outcome a relegation struggle for the whole season.
Secret Site Agent Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 "we will walk this league" sort of throw away comment.. I mean, regardless of the age, style of play, we are already bottom of the league... how on earth could that be enjoyable..? No it isn't That s because you can see a glimmer of hope when.............ah forget that. Let me just say, we can't get any worse. i have commented on how impressed I have been with the change in atttude of the team.
IronCitySaint Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 Some of my best memories as a Saints fan was watching Chris Nichol's teams. They played great attacking football, passing and moving, pace down the flanks, conceding a few but often scoring more. This was done with a nice blend of youth and experience, the youth having come from the fantastic setup that was at this club long before Lowe laid claim to creating the academy system. Plus all this was done in the top league. BUT, Nichol was sacked bacause of RESULTS, even though we were a top half team at that time. You can't just play pretty football, eventually you have to get results. Until we start learning how to defend and put the ball in the back of the net then those results will not come and we will not walk this league of any other. So, no, it is not very enjoyable for me. Bring back Nichol and his team for that was truely fun to watch.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 We need a minimum of 4 points from our next 2 games - anything less and i will be nervous of our chances. I notice that we have all quickly ended talks of promotion and now all seem content on survival. In a few years we have gone from the Premiership to a poor CCC team - depressing! Long Shot Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I find it ironic that you are have been one of the main Pro-Lowe people on this board, yet it appears due our current postion you think things need to change, I dare say blamiong it all on the manager. We are playing the way we are with a young team due to Lowe, Poortvliet is trying to do the best he can with the resources or lack of resources he has at his disposal. But he is restricted in what he can do, especially as some players are apparately not playing because their wages are appearance related. However although I'm not a Lowe supporter, I feel we do not need to panic yet, we are playing some of the best football I've seen us play for years, we just need to tighten up the defence a bit and be more ruthless in attack IMO. Your last 15 words are a big ask I reckon
NickG Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 such a long season winning next two, or losing them will still not make things that much more clearer -I still wouldn't panic/or be claiming we will go up either way. The talk of goal difference is ridiculous, say -and would not be totally amazing, Lallana has two great games and we win next two just 2-0 -we would have one of best goal differences. Thedelldays Posted 17 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I think we have some sick fans if they think watching a bunch of young lads get a lesson week in week out is enjoyable.. we drew tonight, but was oh so lucky to do so.. we are now a very bad team

Your last 15 words are a big ask I reckon It may indeed be a big ask, but at least in Tomas Pekhart we do appear to have someone who could be more ruthless, one half chance one goal, as opposed to Dyer one clear chance blasted over the bar. Secret Site Agent Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 expectations.. when warnock came in at palace (so many laughed at the idea of him coming here) they played far younger players than what we have and almost made the playoffs... we, on the other hand seem to be going the other direction. Then can I say that this is a throw away statement until the end of the season. You can't compare a team after 6 games with one after 40. I think the statement is that there is a feeling of hope, believe and actual care and concern from the team in how they play, rather than those of previous years. You don't mind losing so much, and it takes the sting out of it a little, when you see that the team has poured heart and soul into the match rather than given a half arsed performance once we go a goal down. And NO ONE likes to lose, especially me. When our kids try out at sports day and lose, do we call them 'stupid little ****s,' and give them a slap? When they are running do we shout at them, 'come on you lazy little bastard ****ing move?' No, we don't. We should encouragement. My daughter came in 6th in her sportsday this year in the running race, out of 12. Last year she was 11, and it's the same kids, they are only a year older. At least she kept trying when 5 other kids over took her and I encouraged her. Well, Saints lost 4-1, they kept trying and I encouraged them. I cannot physically make them play better, I cannot score goals for them, or stop goals comming in. I cannot afford to buy the club, nor can I purchase a new striker or midfielder for them. I cannot clear their debts, I cannot get rid of Lowe or Wilde, and I cannot manage the team better than JP. All I can do is go to the games so that I don't strangle them of funds to get better, and try and make them MENTALLY play better, together with 15,000 like minded individuals. I can also sit here, in the anonimity of my office many miles away and moan, verbally attack other posters, slag off Lowe, the team, JP and our position in the league safe in the knowledge that I don't have to be constructive, helpful or in anyway positive, and that I can use my hatred of Lowe to bend, twist and pervert any discussion from is Dyer any good, to Should John start, to are the Pies as good as they used to be to a veiled attack on him. I enjoy a good debate and I always put 'please discuss with a cogent, well thought out and constructive manner' as I really do hate posters who say, '..... because you're an idiot' and don't explain WHY i am an idiot. Be honest, there are plenty on here that will snipe, but wont enter a debate or answer any question on the open forum. Now cue many a wonderful post saying that I am an idiot, and why. Can I say in preparation that you are all very drole, very funny and I love you all.
Whitey Grandad Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 No you're not an idiot and the players are not kids, they are all adults. They need a good kick up the rear but I don't think that would help because, basically, with a couple of exceptions they are not good enough. Navyred Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 There doesn't seem to be a lot to add to this thread which hasn't already been said, but I'll give it a go. Last season, under GB, people were calling for his head and others were wanting to give him time, after all, play-offs the year before. There were certainly hints of pass and move and some good set plays, but then it became all too clear too quickly that the tinker man liked tinkering but nobody knew why. Players were played so far out of position some had to learn a new language. Was this down to GB or was it down to lack of investment, we all saw the problem of the CB's last season, and yet we stock piled the midfield. This season, I can see good work coming from the team. On SUnday they showed just how much they had learnt and just how well JP has coached them, they are a credit to his coaching. Seriously, some of the passing and movement was awesome, top class. This year however, like I have said on more than two occasions, this seasons position lies with McGoldrick. Not because I have any special knowledge of the situation, but because it seemed like they had pinpointed him, early doors, as our main striker. This being the case and with him being quite often, the loan striker, we will struggle. McGoldrick is loving coming deep and getting involved in the moves and the passing. His youth pushes him toward the ball, but as I have said before, he needs to run the channels, be more direct and poach. Until we have McGoldrick playing like a Striker, rather than a link man, we will struggle. Nothing against the lad, but he needs to push up, even if that means not seeing the ball for long spells. It's pointless moaning about the defence if we can't score, and all the time we are conceding, we are ignoring the fact that Stern John is not in the team and that apart from Stern Jon and McGoldrick, we have no strikers, do we? So, whereas I can see where JP has improved the team, I get this feeling we need TWO strikers this season, because playing with just McGoldrick will not win us enough games. And that is what we must correct asap. Understand where you are coming from, have you seen this? http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A41102623 Pekhart and Paterson, sounds like a good double act!!
