The9 Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 Well the dell days, like house prices everythings going up, and to be fair I always wondered how L2 / Conference sides managed to survive on 2,000 crowds. If they can't balance the books they shouldn't be in the league. We are here by default. The whole idea of the -10, and last years bankruptcy are a bad dream. If you've been around as long as your name suggests you'll recall that the sort of money we've spent in the past (even at CCC level) makes this seasons spending look like "tea-money" compared to then. That wouldn't leave too many clubs... Here's 2009 Premier League profit and loss (Hull is for 2008) http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/03/english-premier-league-debt and we ALL know there's no money to be made in the CCC. Arizona Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 £1.5m is one heck of a lot of money for a CB, even for a CCC team. Hope we don't end up spending that much, would be a bit 'Wayne Thomas' if true.
sandwichsaint Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 I think the valuation is what he's worth to us. With him, Jaidi and Ward as our three main CBs, and Perry and Thomas as backup, our squad would look immense. With him, Jaidi and Ward as our three main CBs, and Perry and Thomas as backup, our squad would look immense....... OR MERELY BLOATED? What do we need 5 CH's for? If we sign Ward and new boy it's a (reluctant) good-bye to Perry and WT is neither fish at CH or fowl at RB.

Junior Mullet Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 probably..be we do have a large squad..we trebbled lamberts wages..no doubt hammed, lallana, kelvin, saga and thomas are on a high wage..then the other players, jaidi, connolly... I bet papa is one of the leagues best earners... then you have the coaching staff, the main 3 will earn a fortune.. even so, you are probably right..just dont think I could take it if saints were led down financial ruin again Chill TDD. We are in very good hands financially. We're following the Fulham model of sustainability rather than the Pompey one of boom and bust. By the Fulham model I mean investing relatively modest sums on players to get promoted to the Prem and once in the Prem balance the books carefully to ensure that we break even or thereabouts. I am sure this is the plan and I do not see Liebherr ******ing his money away when we get into the Prem. Unlike Pompey we have: * a large following and will get 30k plus each game in the Prem * fans with money to afford Prem prices, merchandise, food drinks, hospitality etc * a very good infratructure including our own trainign ground, established accademy and stadium * a stadium that makes money from corporate events and from leasing space We have all the things you need for a good sustainable Prem model. Pompey didn't - they relied solely on their sugar daddy to pay the very substantial defecit between income and outgoings. When the sugar daddy got fed up the consequences were no surprise. Pompey will not be taken over unless they are in admin (and even then I have serious doubts as to whether anyone would take the gamble of paying creditors even 10p in the £) because they have none of the things needed to suppoort a sustainable model. I was right about admin being the only thing possible to save our club and I will be right about this, I assure you.

SuperMikey Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 Because Perry is better. Different types of centre back tbh. Thomas is more of a clogger, bit of a brute in the air and more of a physical presence, whereas Perry is a bit more of a hounder in that he pressures strikers and isn't afraid to get stuck in with a tackle. Chalk and cheese in centre back terms.
Arizona Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 If we sign another CB I think you can be pretty sure that Wayne Thomas will be off (on loan or otherwise). I'd hope not, that leaves us looking very short of options in central defence next season. Perry - Ancient, probably gone. Jaidi - Heading that way Fonte - Fair enough Lancashire - er... If anything, I'd prefer to see Perry gone, simply because he doesn't have a future here. I'd be very surprised if he gets a new contract in the summer. Saint Fen Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 the way we are throwing money around in the global down turn and watching clubs like stockport, notts county and pompey face financial ruin..is disgusting I blame the premier league...dunno why, it must be their fault It's the premier leagues fault (And the clubs involved) as they accepted the sky deal and broke away from the Football League, Football is in a mess cause this and as a result large amounts of money are paid to players wages, transfers etc. I think you will find that UEFA and FIFA are also at fault !! They haven't helped with the Champions League, as the top clubs in europe earn loads from this but the main fault lies at the original first division clubs who voted to break away and form the premier league taking the sky rights. Saint Fen Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 If we sign another CB I think you can be pretty sure that Wayne Thomas will be off (on loan or otherwise). Agreed. Why? Why not Perry? Because Perry has so far been Jaidi best partner, and is probably our most solid defender. I've been to every game and he never lets us down. Should have watch Perry and Jaidi mark Beckford at Leeds, my Leeds friend commented on how brilliant these two still are. Why does Thomas get so highly rated for a centre half, sure he did well the other day against Luton but never played well at the start of the season. I'm not saying Thomas is a bad player cause I actually like him but just think Perry is better football and reads the game miles better than Thomas. Sadly I do think it is Perry's last season however if we could get another year out of him it would be fantastic. No, it would be desperate and foolish. Perry is, IMO, getting towards the end of his shelf life and his fantastic reading of the game doesn't always compensate for his lack of pace and height. We need four decent CBs who CDAJFU next season. I really do not want a repeat of summer 2007. "We've got Lundekvam, Powell, Makin and Bennett, we'll be fine" For me it's Thomas, Jaidi and two others. If Thomas leaves... three others.
Andy_Porter Posted 5 January, 2010 Share Posted 5 January, 2010 People have been saying Perry is getting towards the end of his shelf life ever since we signed him and he's consistently been better than Thomas. I'd get rid of Thomas asap while we might still get 100-150k for him and then say goodbye to Perry in the summer and encourage him to take up his coaching badges. I get the impression he'd be a fantastic coach, he reads the game so well.

Thomas is average to poor in every department IMO, whilst Perry does everything well except win headers which is somewhat vital for a CB don't you think? The difference in the side when we brought two huge ball winning center back in Trottman and Jardi was massive. Big centre backs are a must in any league. Happy with Perry as cover. Happy with Thomas as right back cover.

DT Posted 7 January, 2010 Share Posted 7 January, 2010 Perry actually wins quite alot in the air despite his size. Quite so. It's amazing how many people on here bleat 'he's smaaaaalllll' about Perry, whilst at the same time failing to see how he has been picked at centre backs by countless good managers, including in the Prem and never seems to have a stinker. Oh, and he wins a fair few 'vital' headers.

Stattmeister Posted 7 January, 2010 Share Posted 7 January, 2010 Yup. would love Danns here. Also, someone mentioned that if the story is true, then we wouldn't want Jose Fonte as he may be arrogant and not want to be here etc. Similarly, I'd hate for the team spirit that finally appears to be being instilled diminished by the arrival of one player, demanding more than the others. It could create unrest... obviosuly, this is assuming the story is true. We have to realise that any player "dropping" into L1 is here for at minimum, 5 months... maybe until May 2011, longer, whatever... that can't be any easy pitch to make to these players, wonga or not. .comsaint Posted 7 January, 2010 Share Posted 7 January, 2010 Thank you Mr Pardew for looking UP a division for talent! Chez Posted 7 January, 2010 Share Posted 7 January, 2010 (edited) Perry actually wins quite alot in the air despite his size. debatable, and just as important in my opinion is that the headers he does win nearly all tend to not be won cleanly, they go five yards or straight in the air inturn becoming second balls that we have to defend. Look at the distance Jardi gets when he wins a header. Anyone else notice the number of goals we conceded last year or two in the last five minutes when the opposition played three up front and smacked it long? That is down to the simle fact that we did not win first ball enough or clean our lines. Perrys man may not score but the ball is not clearned it falls to someone else, the pressure builds and in the end a chance is served up. When teams have tried that this season they have got short change from the Jardi and Trottman. Far too many excuses are made for Perry because of his size and age. Ignore these two things and you have a center back that is slow and pretty crap in the air. What a combination. As I said earlier I like the other facits of his game and I can't dispute that he has played well on several occasions. I just want better. Better than Thomas, better than Lnacashire and better than Perry. Edited 7 January, 2010 by Chez
