Antonio on extended loan

Am I the only one who would actually be pleased to see Antonio sign?

He's 19 FFS, and he's got something you cannot teach. Blistering pace. We all slagged Dyer off for running into blind alleys and moments of poor ball control, 3 years later he's a regular in the League above us. I'd rather have another RM as a first choice started, but MA is one for the future and a great option off the bench. Yes it would be a let down if this is the signing, but there will be others this window.

Fully agree with everything except the 'let down' part... no player signing is a let down, unless they are a wasteful drain on a limited wages budget that could be better spent elsewhere, and Antonio is not that.

I'm pleased too!

Has potential and given the right coaching could well be a big asset to us.

This is only to get people thinking "Booo we want a proper signing" then they'll pull out someone from the hat and everyone will shout "Yeah, I'm not disappointed anymore!!"

He's a decent player, I know they'll be more signings so I'm not disappointed, useful lad to have when the oppo's back line are lacking in pace!

Okay, "anti-climax" then. I just meant it would be a let down to everyone expecting Ward/Barnard/Adu/Beckford/Robinho etc.

Makes sense though. We can probably get him on a free come the end of the season. Maybe have to pay a couple of hundred thousand development fee IF Reading offer him a new contract.

I'm not disappointed that he signed, just that they felt it newsworthy enough to put on twitter. It isn't.

I know what you mean, but plenty of other people will be glad to have had the update... they're damned if the do and damned if they don't it seems. But if they have these services then they need to use them, which is what they've done.

Far better IMO to put it up on the OS and then up on twitter at the same time. No need to put FIRST SIGNING OF THE YEAR! or words to that effect which builds it up into something bigger than it actually is. If they do it next time I will probably ignore them and it could be a bigger signing such as Ward.

Plus it's a loan extension not a signing.

Indeed.

I guess technically they are correct as he has "signed" something today but it's a tad disingenuous of an offcial club publicity outlet (Twitter) to sensationalise the loan extension of an existing player.

Come on SFC...let's have a less tabloid approach to your 'teasers'.

It's the sort of 'media manipulation' that I'd more assoicate with a certain previous regime.

We should have expected it wasn't a new signing though. On twitter the wording was "Saints 1st deal of the transfer window set to be announced at 11am" so they didn't mislead us.

Ah....that's a bit different then. I assumed the OP was quoting the word "signing" rather than someone paraphrasing the bulletin.

Sigh.

ok so its good that Antonio has a extended loan but come on... tweeting a signing is happening at 11am and getting everybodies hopes up for a Ricky Lambert like signing then just revealing an extended loan for a player already at the club is very cruel....

boring :(

I know its early days but will we sign a quaility new player for keeps? or will everyone coming in just be loans again?

Is it not realistic to assume that loans may be the least risky way of improving the squad for the time being? "Quality players" that have proven ability but are willing to play in L1 are most likely going to be fading in terms of fitness. We will get rising stars that aren't the finished articles, and setting stars that no longer burn so bright. And maybe what we don't want are mid-career trouble-makers, no matter how gifted, that can't get a starting place in a higher league because they have a poor attitude.

After the Bristol Rovers cup game away we all thought he was great. He - as a late developing footballer of nineteen years of age - has a few bad games and he gets all kinds of stick on here just after he's signed for us (it is a signing really, since his contract with his club expires at the end of the season). I think that's a shame. I turst Pardew's judgement and I welcome Antonio. If he can develop more of an all round game to match his pace, he will be very effective.
