I have a week off in Feb and want to go somewhere for a bit of winter sun that isn't going to cost a fortune. Anyone suggest anywhere good please?

As an expert on the Middle East I would recommend staying away from Egypt. Sharm is quirky but it is Arabic.

Your fun centres around your hotel and a couple of bars or restaurants. This means you are at a complete lottery to the whims of your package tour operator & his selection of hotels.

The most fun (even with a better half) is Thailand and Phuket is wonderful. But that will take you forever to get there and the flights will be too much. (For a REAL romantic get away with a beach check out Centara Villas on Latestays.com) Stunning.

I once suggested to a mate to do a tour of Syria, he thought I was mad but went. Damascus, 3 nights, Lattakia (Med beach) 3 nights & Alleppo 1 night. He has never been anywhere else on vacation since

But for cheap breaks in Feb look for deals in my whacky town, They are struggling with hotel bookings at the moment. The beach Hotels offer cheap rates but the booze is extrotionate. However you are allowed to get a case of beer at Duty Free for the price of 2 pints and a bottle of Stolichnaya for the price of a single shot and can have a great time. In Feb we'll have Golf & Tennis. Although you have to take a 1 hour coach trip from Abu Dhabi, Etihad will offer good deals as will Royal Brunei. PM if you want help

If I were you - I'd head for the Canary Islands in February.

January & February temperatures average nearer 25C / 77F with high humidity.

Prices are good for this time of year...and I believe that very low-cost budget airlines now fly there from Southampton or Bournemouth???

Either way - nice sunny temperatures for not a lot of wonga! ;)

This is all utter, utter, turd encrusted tripe. Don't believe a word. I doubt this guy's ever even left England, nevermind been on some sort of wine soaked, US dollar denominated, golf tour of the Middle East.

Go to Lebanon.

Air Asia X have pretty cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur around this time of year. Can't speak for Malaysia myself, never been there. Just a thought.

How about Israel. Don't forget to pack your shell suit and tell Aviv you're coming.

Personally I'd choose Phuket, for that never to forget ladyboy experience.

P.S. If you do decide on Patong, say hi to George.

Love all these suggestions. The bloke has a week off and wants some cheap winter sun. He's talking about warm locations nearby. The nearest will be Portugal, but it probably won't be warm enough in Feb. Neither will Malta, but you never know with that place. .Comsaint's suggestion is probably as near and cheap as you'll get, and certainly warm enough. Might be windy though.

Tenerife is good and the flights are reasonable and frequent.

I prefer Puerto De La Cruz on the north of the Island to the main resort of Playa De Las Americas/Los Cristianos in the south. It really depends on what you're after. Las Americas is better for younger people, wheras Puerto De La Cruz is more compact and relaxed. Los Gigantes/Puerto de Santiago is OK, but not a lot there after a weeks stay. Any other resorts to those mentioned don't bother with.

Hiring a car is really cheap and i'd recomend it for the duration of your stay.

With the £ to the Euro being crap go all inclusive or Half Board as once you're there it's a lot pricier than it was.

You may be lucky on the Algarve. Love the area around Carvoeiro. Go east for Benagil

Praia da Gale and Praia da Marinha. Go west for Alvor and Meia Praia. The latter is one big mother of a beach. However given the choice I'd probably plump for Egypt for reliable, affordable Feb sun. Look at El Gouna, Makadi Bay and Marsa Alam as alternatives to Sharm. If going AI choose hotel carefully!

That whole stretch between Lagos and Albufeira would be a good bet for beaches and nice things to eat and drink. Water temp tends to get a lot colder the further west you go of Lagos towards the peninsula.
