Lee Barnard

Papa ...is very quick as is Antonio.....see them in training/sprints.

Unfortunately Holmes is regularly overtaken bt the groundsman pushing the lawn mower.

Papa ought to start his runs 2 yards deeper..and he wouldn't be offside so much. If he's half as fast as everyone claims then it won't matter, he'll still get into the box first.

(Johnny Sydenham was always willing to draw the defender a bit, punt the ball past him ..and he WAS off like lightening !)

Maybe Holmes isn't so fast but can the groundsman pass and centre as well as Holmes.?

Seems to me that (AP) comments suggested he was MOM for Saints on Saturday.

As this thread is about Barnard, then he's the sort of extra frontman we need to give more punch up front.

Leeds may look good in the league but is Barnard willing to move up there?.

Southern-born lads aren't always happy to move north.

I noticed that on one of the Southend fan-sites they are encouraging people to rig the Daily Echo poll and vote for Lisbie over Barnard as the player Saints fans would prefer to sign.

I think it's gonna take more than a local paper poll to keep hold of him!

Southend won't budge on the 250k quoted. They know full well either us or Leeds will pay it.

We might as well stop fannying about and offer the full amount to tie the deal up.

It's hardly like he's been overvalued!

I'm getting quite annoyed by all this being stingy over transfer fees (if reports are true of course.) We paid a million for a defender so what is 100K? He's clearly worth a lot more than 250K.

Do we know for a fact that we have made a bid and that we are haggling with Southend?

Please buy a used car off me....

If you pay the asking price everytime, you'll not get the best value for money. We've got money, true, but avoiding the impresssion that we're easy with it is important (else we'll get taken for a ride).

I agree. Colchester paid around £400,000 for Gillespie from Cheltenham last season and he hadn't scored nearly as many as Barnard. Think he's good value at 250K.

Or' date=' if Pards, wants to keep Paterson, then perhaps Paterson on loan til the end of the season plus cash.[/quote']

I'm obviously alone in thinking Patterson may come good one day, so I'd be sorry to see him leave permanently. But a loan out somewhere to the end of the season would do him good. He needs experience.

Just reading the Mirror and they've followed the Sun's lead' date=' from yesterday, and said Barnard has signed for Leeds for an undisclosed fee. I'm wondering if this is one deal that's not going to go our way now...[/quote']

Have to believe the beeb over the tabloids. Seems Leeds have definitely made a bid of £175,000. But I don't see why Southend would accept that. Just think it's the start of a bidding war, and hopefully we should be able to offer full price and good terms. Whether he'd rather go to Leeds than us is yet to be discovered.

If it's 200k and Paterson on loan for the rest of the season it's a cracking deal.

if it's 200k and Paterson i'm not so sure, I'd rather just keep hold of Paterson and go for another target.

Still he's a decent player at this level and should help us over the next 18 months if we sign him.

Southend aren't the most prolific scorers in L1 (29 goals in total)- perhaps poor finishing or lack of chances.

From our game agains them they didn't seem very creative. Their best player on the day was the right winger who gave Harding a torrid time all game, other than him their midfield looked very poor.

Would be a good signing for us at this level if the 200k fee is correct. Paterson, Connolly, Lambert and Bernard is a pretty handy set of strikers.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we hear about the signing Friday afternoon, as I heard he’s having a medical at St Mary's tomorrow morning

Looks like this might be on then! Found this on a Southend forum discussing his strengths and weaknesses. Looking at the pros and cons listed by the first poster, he does sound Ormerod-esque, as someone else said on the main HCDAJFU thread...

But its not just the transfer fee is it? Agents, wages, signing on fees etc etc etc. We need to clear some players out - NC will not keep just buying.
