I made that mistake once. Staying in Spain so we went over there for a day. We forgot is was a bank Holiday, so pretty much everything was shut. Watched a few planes come in and went to Morocco on a Dolphin seeing trip. We didn't see any, but got a free return trip if we came back.

Gibraltar is indeed a dump. The rock is an interesting natural sight to see from the sea, especially when the clouds seem to pour over the top of it, but once you've seen it you've seen it!
