I just got told that this deal is off. Ward will not be coming to Southampton.

 

My mate has been correct in the past. I just hope this time hes wrong..

 

He probably doesn't fancy 18 months in League 1. That's going to be a really big sticking block for us on signing players. Plus I doubt that we are offering top class salaries, decent salaries without a doubt but no one is going to get more than 6 or 7 K basic from us.

A Baggies-supporting mate has just advised me that Coventry will not sell Elliott Ward until they have signed Leon Barnett from West Brom as a replacement. There are however a few clubs after Barnett.

well spotted Patrik, (...got enough snow down your way? - Stockholm is paralysed - as usual.)

 

On a earlier Coventry thread (Dec.23) Coleman admits that Ward is on the way out of the club.

it's just a case of where, and being a former AP player, we must be favourites to sign him.

Hi David -19 at the moment here i Fagersta and about 50cm of snow. Must say im tired of the winter at the moment...

 

Sound like a good signing and that AP has worked with him before can´t be a bad thing.

Now that Fonte has turned down the chance of coming to St Mary's

 

Ward maybe now a possibility

 

I doubt we were after both Fonte and Ward

Nice me thinks we need 2 anyway because perry is getting old and will retire soon and jaidi will need rest. Hopefully we can get them! COYR's!:D

Would be nice but can't see two good quality CBs willing to drop a division to sit on the bench, if true would probably mean Jaidi becomes a cover player?

I personally see it more as a rotation of 3. Jaidi, Ward and Fonte as the regular CB's with Perry as backup.

 

Thomas will be gone, and Lancashire can be loaned out for further experience.

Jardi has been tremendous. I admit I know little about Fonte or Ward, but they are going to have to be pretty bloody good to dislodge him. Great problem to have.

 

Who is going to come on for Thomas though. His wages are going to be too high for most.

By signing Fonte (a fantastic signing that in hindsight could be better than the Lambert signing), I think there is less of a chance of getting Ward as well.

 

I wouldn't rule it out, but I just think Pardew, Cortese, Markus & Co won't want to have someone earning what Jaidi does on the bench. Jaidi is awesome for League 1 anyway - so I wouldn't be buying TOP talent in the CB just yet, now we have Fonte.

Judgin by what Pards said on Solent, about thinking about bringing someone in who's not having a good time of it elsewhere, it would fit with Ward. Plus Coleman admitted we'd been in contact.

 

I'm just not sure if he'll want Fonte AND Ward. We await news with interest.

I think he views Fonte and Ward as a good long term partnership, they sound like they would compliment each other! I think Ward is the player Pards was talking about, he isn't having a good time at Cov.

I was thinking the same. But after hearing Pards talking post-Fonte signing. I'd say we DEFINITELY want both.

I dont see any reason why Jaidi won't play next season, it's not like he's got any pace to lose. He's been a rock for us, got at least one more season in him.

 

But yes Ward, Fonte and Jaidi competing for two spaces would be great. Would quite like to keep Perry around in a coaching capacity as well, he's obviously a proper footballer and knows the game inside out.

All of Saints' current first team squad defenders (Thomas, Perry, Jaidi) are the wrong side of 30, two the wrong side of 34! The main reserve player is vastly inexperienced (Lancashire).

I think we need a couple of new additions to supplement the above, you could just say Fonte is a replacement for Trotman (has he been given the No.12 shirt? ;))

I thought Pardew said the squad was too big at the moment - when their contracts end new players will probably be signed

Got to be a done deal.. the sky sports understands parts means sources have told the the deal is done and its just a way of covering their backs.

 

the inclusion of the length of contract is also important here i would suggest

Whatever happened to our tree scout at Staplewood...Surely the comings and goings for medicals etc....Was it Pilchards? Are we not paying him enough expenses.....

Good times. Now we have 4/5 solid centre backs. Perry's a bit old, as is Jaidi, but would have Jaidi and Fonte as first choice with Ward next then Perry. Thomas as stand in right back if needed.

No chance it will be anywhere near £1m or even £500k.

 

His contract ends in 6 months so £200k is more likely.
