Elliot Ward - The Story!

Except that neither of them were centre backs, midfielders both of them, although that terms hadn't yet been invented. Beckenbauer was a "libero" and Moore was a wing half.

I will grant you that Beckenbaur was able to play either position and, owing to the times, Bobby Moore was techically a wing half - left half actually - BUT in Sir Alf's wingless wonders of 1966 Bobby Moore was a CB in a back four comprising Ray Wilson, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore and George Cohen and in a team that played 4 - 3 - 3.

Bobby Moore was most definately NOT a midfielder. I never, ever saw him play in a midfield role.

Wiki now says:

Southampton

He was one of Southampton's Signing's in the January Transfer Window, controversially he left Southampton a day after joining to set up a jam factory with Rudi Skacel.

Wikipedia is gospel. *sigh*.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but it is slightly refreshing that Saints are out there, with their feelers into the market from day one, rather than in years past whereby we'd pick up whoever was left out of the alsorans.

By the way, I don't include Rickie Lambert's transfer in that category. We were just unavoidably late in getting ourselves sorted in pre-season.

More cov views -

''Elliott Ward is a good player, he would get into most teams if he was prepared to do what was asked. He is very talented, but he forgets he is a centre back and sometimes worries too much about tryingto be fancy than actually defending. I always describe him as a poor rio ferdinand (west ham days).

Coleman told Ward when he came in that he wanted him to concentrate on being a defender, and stop the fancy play and trying to take people on, but he didn't listen and it cost him his place. If he'd have listened, he'd be a quality player and nt just a good player.''

sounds to me like he is the ''ball playing CB'' that we've been crying out for (he may need to tone down a bit though....)....but it would leave Jaidi to do the dirty work and heading...

I saw the magnificent top quality ITK resource that is Wikipedia re Ward, and wasn't for one second fooled by it.

Ahem.

Good, because looking at the history of the page it has been edited 21 times in the last 24 hours, and every time the edit has been undone. Obviously the **** who thinks he can update Wiki knows nothing about how it works, and how it is moderated. The changes will always be undone as long as there is no plausible reference that can be cross-checked for validation.

Just found out some more info on him ...(wiki can be useful sometimes)

''When Ward was brought into the first team for west ham, for the 1-3 loss against Reading on 12 March 2005, the club were lying outside of even the playoff places and looked unlikely to make it back to the Premiership, a position that was perceived by many to be a major underachievement. The pairing of Ward and Ferdinand brought a level of confidence to the team that had been missing for the first part of the season and, perhaps because of this, the team went unbeaten for the rest of the season. This unbeaten run included the three playoff games, thus ensuring their return to the Premiership for the following season.''

''His performances for Coventry (2 seasons ago) have attracted significant interest from Charlton Athletic and Fulham, or even a move back to former club West Ham for reported £2.5 million fees.''

This could be an absolute steal...

Apparently Ward is traveling down for a medical and to discuss terms tomorrow - the only worry is the imminent weather issues....

if it doesn't happen though, don't blame me! only passing on snippets of what I've heard.

If he is put off by a bit of snow and ice we dont want him - big girls blouse :)

Hopefully this will turn out to be true, he sounds just what we need.

Now for a right back please Mr Pardew !

Very True, however he wouldn't be any good to us if he wrapped his car around a tree, so let's hope the council still has the money to grit the roads.

A couple of PNE fans seem to think he might be going there....

Must say, if it was between PNE and Saints he would surely pick PNE?

I would imagine we would be able to offer better wages and more chance of first-team football than Preston. Just hope the latter reason would be the main motive for potentially joining, as it usually isn't!!!!

PNE have Trotman back, St Ledger back and they are tied to a deal to make Neil Collins loan move from Sunderland perm. this month.

...then they've also got Chilvers...Mawenne....

he'd be silly to go there, he'd be fighting from day 1 - he would walk into our team from day 1.

i like the way we have put our knob in the glory hole and seen who fancies a suck. Makes a change from looking for sloppy seconds

that is some analogy, my man.

:D

That sir, is one of the funniest lines I have ever read on here, I dont think anyone could miss the point you are making ;)

Post of the year so far.

here all week

Serious mate, utter genius... has there EVER been a better analogy?!

So Chris Lines and Elliot Ward the couple of bids Pardew was talking about after the game?

Sounds like a good start to the transfer window if true. Hopefully a striker like Lee Barnard or Simeon Jackson to follow and possibly another right back.

I can officially say weve definately are in for Chris Lines....weve been on the phone to rovers although so have leeds and huddersfield. my source is a member of bristol rovers board!

A left-winger would be lovely please Pards, Lallana's great on the left but I can't help thinking that a good quality left-footed player would do us the absolute world of good and really give our team a great balance. It'd also give us a few more crosses for Lambert and Connolly to snap up.
