Elliot Ward - The Story!

WTF!? just read the article about us pulling out of the deal. WHY?

I can't be arsed to read through the last 3 pages of this thread, but why did we pull out at the 11th hour?!?

The answer is actually written as an acrostic using the first letter of all of the posts on this thread.

So in an amazing twist of irony, you actually have to be arsed to read through the last 3 pages of the thread to get the answer.

Either that or nobody knows...

This story has been around for nearly two weeks so why has it taken this long for that to be the reason to pull the plug is media leakage. AP would be in complete agreement with the decision whether it be on money/medical/players attitude/delays caused by Coventry or player or Saints/or revised thinking by AP. No lets blame NC petulance.

and I have never used the word "petulance" and I am not suggesting the approach is necessarily wrong. I am just suggesting that it is a possible reason for pulling the plug.

I think it is obvious that seabourne was preferred over ward for whatever reason. There are presumably numerous similar 'nearly transfers' that we never hear about so i would say the ward situation is totally unremarkable.

Either Seabourne is more highly rated by AP than Ward, or for financial reasons, such as more left to spend on other players, or greater potential for added value to the seabourne signing, seabourne was preferred. Either way we have our man and I look forwaerd to seeing him play.

When clubs buy a player, they don’t look at the transfer fee as we do. They look at the whole package cost, transfer fee, signing on fee, total wages for contract, agents fee etc.

My guess is that after negotiation the package for Ward was pretty high. NC may have given AP the choice, Ward or Seaborne plus Ostenbore plus Misfud.

Pardew might have looked at the gamble, Ward with a dodgy medical V 3 players who might turn out to be gems and gone for the 3.

This is all just a guess as not in the know about this in anyway.

Morning chaps.

Here's the story, Elliot Ward completed terms with Saints and had signed half the paper work, he was set to travel down the next day to finalise all the paper work and meet the Saints squad as they return from Spain. Saints contacted Coventry and told them the deal would not be concluded.

Daily Echo have it spot on.

Elliot Ward is one un happy chap.

Obviously AP and NC have to make decisions based on the best interest of the club and, if as is suggested, Seaborne becoming available meant we no longer wanted Ward then so be it. That said, scrapping the deal at the point where half the paperwork was completed and the player due to meet his new teammates is incredibly harsh on Ward and, if it is to be indicative of the way we handle transfers, it could cause us problems in the future.

Was it because of the Seaborne deal, or the medical, or neither, or both?

If Cortese really has binned this transfer to make a point to Sky then someone needs to tell Nicola that Sky does not give a flying frig about the Chief Exec of League One Southampton.

But I really can't see that being the reason.

It's obviously nothing to do with the media as this has been an open secret for some time. We wouldn't have wasted our time for this long and would have simply gone for Seabourne earlier.

I suspect Ward was #1 target but Seaborne became #1 target. Why? Don't know, but I'm confident it would have been a footballing decision (and I include player contracts, medicals etc in that) rather than a reaction to the story being in the press.

There is something that does not add up here....Ward had not played many games at all. Coventry trying to off load because of the wages etc..fine..But if fit he was never selected very often..Why? Medical or are we waiting..If someone else signs him in this window that may give us a clue.....Will we revisit or did a second look at the xray tell us something. Very strange... No idea myself ..before you say it....Like always..

Whereas JO... whatever the Norwich fans say about off loading he was a highly paid player and financially they are broke....... JO our new full back played a lot of games and is rated by many at Carrow Road....Again, is he fully fit medically..hence the 6 month contract.. Or gamble for cover and he may regain top level performances.....Not so strange:)

Whoever is doing the official twitter account for Saints is extremely amateur, unprofessional and embarrassing. The remark about Sky is disrespectful to one of the most accurate media outlets going.

I thought it was a bit naff as well.

it's a shame that we don't really know the full facts - but from an outside view it looks like a real shoddy peice of work by saints.

by the way the seabourne transfer was rushed through, i could sense something was up.

I agree I cannot see it was professional at all.

But that said hit NC may have thought it in the best interests of SFC

Not sure I think it went further than that according to the Coventry telegraph

Now imagine Ward had originally turned down our terms and we'd gone looking elsewhere. Then we offer him slightly better and he accepts. In the meantime we've found a player who is thought to be as good, so we tell Ward to go

shove it as a lesson that no-one tries it on for more than he's worth with SFC.

Just a hypothesis mind you.

Another Hypothesis SFC renaged on a deal agreed with Ward.

But who cares these things happen

Or perhaps Ward was not enthusiastic about atleast 6 months in league one and seaborne was very driven and keen to prove a point ??

That would have sold it for me, what also backs it up is the rumours that he only wanted an 18 month contract.

Decent player or not i don't want anyone here not willing to give 100% for the team, and i seriously believe that seaborne will.

Personal term and the medical was all completed, Saints just opted for Seabourne.

Well thats the way it goes sometimes espically in the frantic transfer window. Player A cannot leave until we have a replacement or the old chestnut of humping up the price as other clubs want player x.

AP was happy with Ward or Seaborne, bids went in for both, both clubs accepted and Pardew choose Seaborne. Simple. Why all the fuss?

my guess as well, we would have been quick to criticise on here if Pardew commented that he missed out on signing a good CB as he made one offer and sat back and it was rejected.

Fonte looks the class act - maybe he was surprised that we actually managed to get him? But once we did felt Seaborn was better long longterm partner?

Perhaps.

But, if the Coventry Telegraph is to be believed, the fact they reported Ward signed is testament to the calibre and speed of their contacts.

The Telegraph states the deal was practically done and dusted before the plug was pulled. A fast thinking news organisation would have taken that as enough reason to report he had signed. They even reported the length of his contract. Not many deals are pulled at such a late stage from the club's own accord. It's usually a player finding, or waiting for, another club (ala Robinho) or if the player has failed a medical.

This is a strange deal and I wouldn't blame Sky for what they did.

If Sky News reported that a plane had crashed, only to retract it later on after finding that it had only nearly crashed, people would think they were idiots.

On the reporting of the Ward transfer, I think they were idiots
