Toomer Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 It's a sad indictment when you get criticised for scoring 30 yard free kicks. I agree it was a good free kick and yes he has scored 21 goals, take the time to watch him there are parts in his game which are missing, at times he lacks the ability to read the game and take up positions to get on the end of crosses. Exactly right St Marco; I doubt there is a team in the league (including Leeds and Norwich) that wouldn't find a place for Lambert in the side. He's as good a striker as we could possibly hope for at this level. And he's the closest thing I've seen at the club since we lost Beattie; a real handful for any defence and with excellent close control and finishing to boot. He doesn't lose very much in the air either. We're very lucky to have him in the side.

Weston Saint Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Poor game from Saints point of view against a decent passing Luton side. Lucky to come away with a win but may be we just did enough. Lallana bright and tricky up front with Lambert. He is learning a lot from Lambert and Connolly. Fantastic free kicks from Lambert. Schniederlin did a decent job in midfield. Perry played an intelligent positional defencive role. Thomas was excellent in all he did. Probably my man of the match. Antonio was poor. Davis made a couple of good saves but other than that he is poor with coming to get the ball and his distribution. Paterson looked decent when he came on. The rest do not warrant much mention. Still, a win is a win.

RedWillie Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 strange atmosphere - very quiet apart from the Northam and they weren't at their best. Very poor match only livenend up by Rickies free kicks and the comedy football show from Antonio - he really is very bad, in fact he is worse than that. Am i missing something ? He just is terrible. Still a win is a win - shocking miss from Luton that could have meant an interesting finish.
View From The Top Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Oh well, we are through, i really couldn't care less about the FA cup this year, we get no points for it, we will not get any where near Wembley. Concentrate on the league please Mr Pardew, and obviously a day out in the JPT final would be nice. Hopefully we will get a nice big team away, somewhere i haven't been. Arsenal away would be lovely. Sums it up perfectly.
up and away Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Thank **** AP was sensible enough to play our best available team and not what some "fans" thought we should do. If we had lost today we would have been the headlines, because there are no real shocks for the pundits to talk about. That would have been so embarrassing. Always thought Luton would be a tougher prospect than Northampton or Torquay, or for that matter some L1 teams. They should be a league club and are on a good run. Still good to see we will be in the hat for R4, and will be the underdogs almost certainly. That's one way of looking at it. What's more than likely is to find ourselves away to the likes of Doncaster and getting our arses handed to us on a plate. There should be a massive emphasis on us getting into the play off's and this was another chance to rest up more players. I am fully aware we have a week to get over it, but we have hardly been setting the grass alight of late. By the time we get in players and get them up and running the damage could be too big to recover from. Cortese says his main priority is the league, well he had better have a word with Pardew because I don't believe he has caught on to that bit yet. Chez Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Not the best game in the world, but there were certainly positives to take from the game especially how we managed to close the game down in ht efinal ten minutes. We had been poor in the second half and they had got a hold of the game but the tactical substitutions worked totally and no further chances fell their way. Davis 7 nothing to do, one terrible throw out James 4 some poor crossing, got completely beaten for pace by a slow forward and bottled a tackle. Thats about it. Thomas 5 doesn't dominate in the air, is slow and not so sure abot his positional play either, didn't get tight enough, not impressed. He should be stand out against Blue Square attackers Perry 6 did not win a header all game and if he did it didn't clear our lines. One fantastic block in the second half Harding 7 solid as ever but went missing when their best chance was created Antonio 4 he's a sub, use him as a sub. Lots of poor crosses, not enough quality Hammond 6 some good, some bad. I question some of his positional play, but workrate decent Schneiderlin 7 some great, some periods where he disapeared Waigo 3 just looks lost out wide. Did next to nothing. When he gets in forward positions I want to see him going at the fullback. He doesn't want to do that, so what is he doing? Lallana 7 very busy, high workrate, played as the lead striker playing on the shoulder of their CB Lambert 7 my only concern was that he dropped in the hole, which is where Lallana ought to be in this partnership, but what a free kick. He really is a goalmachine. Patterson 7 bright, powerful energetic display. This is the player I said was a diamond last season. Very impressed and so glad he put that poor display at the start of the season behind him. Gobern 6 controlled cameo in the middle. I've said all along he is a Carlton Palmer like CM and at last it has been spotted. Lancashire 6 not on long, but for some reason I felt more confident with him than if Wotton had come on. Bailey Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 A win is a win. Wasn't the most entertaining of games and Saints were well below-par IMO. Full credit to Luton though, they gave it a good go and probably deserved a replay to be honest. Rickie Lambert continues to impress. He didn't have his best game today, but he held the ball up well, brought others into play and scored a top-draw free-kick. It speaks volumes when people are surprised to see Lambert fail to hit the target from a set-piece, even if it is 40-yards out! Looking forward to the 4th Round Draw now, hoping for Tottenham at St. Mary's. We haven't had the chance to 'welcome' Saggy Chops back yet, and no doubt it'd be a sell-out if we did get Spurs. Agree with all of that Chez but to be fair to Papa he was playing on the left, which meant he was always coming inside. Paterson looked really good today I was well pleased to see him actually look like a footballer. He was much more of a goal threat than any others after he came on but also made some good build up play. Obviously had some good coaching this season. CLOTH EARS Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Antonio.............. George Lawrence,Steve Baker and Ali Dia all rolled into one. That made me giggle! In all honesty Antonio has too many poor games. He had one good moment in the 1st half when he got in a shot that their keeper saved, other than that he was sub standard. In the 1st half i thought we were neat tidy, our movement was good and our passing was bang on and we should have gone in at least 3-0 up. Luton made changes at half time and decided to go at us, combine this with the fact that we took our foot off the gas and that is why the 2nd half ended up like it did. I thought that our midfield went awol in the 2nd half, we stopped winning the ball in the midfield area and that just invited Luton on to us. They took encouragement from this and they had a couple of good chances, one Luton player will be having nightmares tonight when he thinks about that chance that he miskicked in front of goal! A half decent contact and he would've scored.

hectors house Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 I thought second half was the worst I have seen Saints at home this season. I suspect a few players were not entirely focused, at least 3 times in the second half Luton players were left entirely free in attacking positions. Personally I thought Luton were very average (which is perhaps to be expected for a non league side) and Saints just gave them confidence with a very poor second half display. On that performance I would never play Waigo on the left side of midfield again, his biggest asset is his pace but he just didn't want to go down the line on his left foot. Personally I was very disappointed to not see Lee Holmes get a run out at some point – it seems Pardew just does not rate him but if so why put him on the bench? For me Perry was MOM but I'm worried if Jaidi is injured and with Trotman gone we don't have a dominant bruising centre back who wins the ball in the air. On the positive side Lambert is on his way to being a legend, at the start of the season I questioned why he kept taking free kicks but now I know why. Over the last few months he has definitely got his “eye in” and whilst he is not quite Le Tiss at this level his is getting to be just as good. I am looking forward with some trepidation to next weeks game with Huddersfield which I think will be a good indication of how the rest of our season goes. Crab Lungs Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 If we get the Skates at home in the next round and beat them (assuming they beat Coventry), that could be the catalyst for a resurgence in our season. Once the team see 30,000 packed house and hear the noise, I doubt they couldn't help but be absolutely inspired. A Pardew rallycry pre-derby would also crank the fans, the city and the team up a few notches too.

Still, a win is a win. I agree with this summary too. Luton carved themselves some decent chances, but their finishing was woeful. Undoubtedly a team possessing more capable strikers would have buried a couple of those chances and we were defensively naive to have allowed that amount of space to be exploited, but got away with it. Both teams had a couple of chances where a goal line scramble could have been finished apart form some desperate defensive work. I'm surprised that nobody thus far has mentioned that it seemed that we had about three of four handball appeals turned down, at least one of them being in the box. I reckon the ref chickened out of that one. The Lambert free kick from which he scored was top drawer and would have graced a Premiership match. Their goalkeeper positioned himself a bit right of centre where Lambert would normally be aiming if I'm not mistaken. But Lambert curled it beautifully into the top left corner. But as Weston says, a win is a win and all that really matters is that we are through to the next round. Although improbable, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that we could win the FA Cup by riding our luck and having these sorts of breaks where we don't play to our potential but the other teams we play miss chances to bury us. That is the essence of Cup football. We won this match and begin the next one with a clean slate, where we might beat a top Premiership club or lose to a lower division side.
