Looking at the particularly cold weather of late got me thinking about SMS and a rumour from a while back that under pitch heating pipes had been installed but heaters had not. Just wondering if anyone has any up to date info on this? Seemslike it's another investment Markus might consider alongside Staplewood to improve SMS?

Correct. The pipes for drainage can double up as under-soil heating, but it was not deemed necessary to put the heaters in due to the location of Southampton, and the fact that SMS is pretty much at sea level and next to a river.

Looking at the 9-odd years of SMS so far, that decision looks correct. And can't recall many games being frozen off at the Dell in the latter years, other than that Crewe FA Cup match, and that was because the pipes weren't lagged!

The piping system under St Marys was installed but never connected so the system cannot be used at present. The system could be used to warm the ground to prevent freezing and also extract surplus water from the pitch to prevent floding. The heating was deemed too expensive to run and not vital due to the grounds location near the sea so he who cannot be named stopped the work.

The system is all installed so could be connected.

Can't see the point really - there are better things to spend money on.

If it freezes, postpone the game. We've had cold weather recently, but I cannot ever remember a game at SMS being stopped because of a frozen pitch. I think it came close once in the early years, but I don't think it happened. Anyone know?

I remember a game being called off because of rain (evening match whilst still in the Premiership), but other than that we've been fairly lucky. One of the benefits of being on the South coast Riviera

Agree with comments above regarding need in the past although it is getting colder to the point where frozen ground will stop a game. I think they put covers on the pitch nowadays though?

Can't think of any major facilities SMS is really missing. However, I think we should add a log flume to the stadium. Even Barcelona don't have that.

Before we start messing about with the pitch it might be a good idea to fix the roof - a little lad near me had rain water constantly dripping onto his head/seat during the last home match .

Ball boy? it happens.;)

sorry no they dont, neither do Fulham. There are talks that it should be made mandatory

Fulham will have to sort that out then, no need for the other lot they won't be there much longer.

Kids today, huh! When I were lad we didn't have roofs.

isnt it a requirement to have undersoil heating in the prem?

That's a myth and clearly wrong as our ground proves. Fratton Park, St Andrews and Craven Cottage don't have undersoil heating either.

If you end it in the river, it could be the exit for away fans.

I'm pretty sure that was in LifeLongsaints/HelpMeRhonda's blueprint to success.

If only they had taken over :(

I'll forgive Fulham, who have one of the most charming grounds in the Prem - not something you could remotely say about you know who.

They promised a log flume, but actually they were secretly planning to build a set of swings and a see-saw.

Chips. Need to invest in the kiosks to buy new equipment to make chips.

Clean the supports would be nice.

Then paint them red. Would look good against the white background and would give SMS a bit more of a stand-out identity compared to other "flat-pack" stadiums.

Any photoshop wizzards out there?

Sound idea, I'll conjure something up on photoshop later if no one does it before I'm home. Off to the football now, will look at SMS and imagine red supports and a log flume. "COYR" and all that.

Same thing happened to me in the Chapel Stand. It was like Chinese water torture. No-one else around me affected, just me. Brilliant.

All Pinnacle had to offer was a pack of cards and a set of dominoes with three missing.

Are you a little lad? Maybe he was talking about you?

Pinnacle were going to build the worlds fastest rollercoaster, but the Premier League wouldn't let them.

I can think of many things I've been described as, but "little lad" is most certainly not one of them!

If we are to believe the man made global warming lie then there's no need for undersoil heating, but this little nugget puts that theory into question..

Why don't you go away and actually do some reading on the 'theory'. It is entirely predictable that an overall warming effect can cause such cold spells, they can be induced by changes in trans-oceanic currents that are caused by heat absorbtion by the sea. Historically, Britain's climate has been out of phase with the continent due to the warming effect of the trans-Atlantic currents, we have generally warmer winters than our neighbours. As these currents change course, and use a more southerly track, we come more into the influence of colder northern waters drawn down from the Arctic.

According to the left wing Climate Change comrades global warming makes it colder.

Better get those pipes hooked up Markus.

... or we could buy another decent player?

Don't think SMS has ever really had a problem with frost so what is the point ??

Would be a waste of money IMO, i was hoping reading the thread title it may have been an expansion etc. Or even better beer !!!!!!

Has anyone seen the 'graffiti' on the concourses at Stoke?

All football related.

Shame we can't get Big Ron's caricatures of players old and current enlarged and copied to cover the dark depressing breeze-block walls in our concourses.

Perhaps the beer wouldn't seem so bad if we had something cheerful to smile at?

Was this the same little boy that was with his Dad and was offered a different seat but chose to stay? My seat is two behind.
