Baj Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Im moving into a new house in a couple of weeks and need to recarpet the lounge... and I've never had to do it before. I don't mind paying for fitting etc, but don't even know where to start looking. I saw allied carpets online, put presumably that's like going to Dixons for a PC when I could get the same thing from novatech for half the price? help!
bridge too far Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 If you go to somewhere like Allied Carpets you'll have to pay for fitting. Sometimes, local independents will fit for free. That's certainly what we've found up here in darkest Oxfordshire
Jillyanne Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Carpet Barn in Eastleigh (well Boyatt Wood) are good and their prices include fitting. The carpets are not cheap though unless you opt for an off cut of which they have loads.
saint_stevo Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 there is a place near the bp garage in plaitford. Crusader carpets. Try them
norwaysaint Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Can you keep this sort of stuff to the buying and selling forum, cheers.

RonManager Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 After all, it's nice to have new carpet in the SWF lounge.
scott_saints Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Carpet Barn in Eastleigh. My mate pretty much runs the place- good prices including fitting!
hamster Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Baj, iirc one of you mods is a carpet fitter, no? Look back throught he threads about 'steroids' or was it 'stair rods'? Anyway, have you considered sanding the floorboards? It is so much healthier (and by far the most hygenic) flooring solution especially if you've got youngsters and/or pets. Added benefit of fresh air circulating around. If you do go for carpets i would recomend having a proper stair carpet fitted with some sublime brass rods. hamster
NickG Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 got good deal from Wilton carpets in Hedge End - smaller shop opposite post office. Would recommend using s/emp carpet fitter and them to supply underlay - much better deal than all in package from big shops.

hamster Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 My Dad hada good job done a few months back, they even moved heavy furniture from room to room for them. I'm seeing them later i'll get a number but you should always get at least two quotes.

Verbal Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Can you keep this sort of stuff to the buying and selling forum, cheers. I think you will find that this place is called The Lounge for a reason.
Dog Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 (edited) Give Captain Rugmuncher a call in Winchester, tell him I told you about him. You will get free fitting and a decent sh*g at half the price. Edited 1 January, 2010 by Dog
Pugwash Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Baj, don't skimp on the underlay (assuming you're not having a foamback) - makes all the difference.
saint_stevo Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 mate of mine is a fitter and gets hold of carpets as well. If u want his number drop me a pm
Baj Posted 1 January, 2010 Author Posted 1 January, 2010 Also considering the laminate flooring route, thoughts on that as well?
bridge too far Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Also considering the laminate flooring route, thoughts on that as well? Or - even better - engineered wood! Fits like laminate but looks so much nicer. More expensive however.

Ask your partner to make a decision for you, as he/she obviously wears the trousers in your home and doesn't need to consult a web forum to decide what he's having in his sandwiches every day. Thanks for the points Baj, but if you post such bullsh¡t, then expect a bit back. Happy New Year x Edited 1 January, 2010 by Dog
Block 5 Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 there is a place near the bp garage in plaitford. Crusader carpets. Try them I know someone who works there. Do you?
Jillyanne Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Also considering the laminate flooring route, thoughts on that as well? Our whole downstairs is laminate and although healthier than carpet - shows up every spec of dust, needs sweeping at least twice a day and is very cold uness you get under floor heating. I would go with carpet if I were you.

Saint in Paradise Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 I don't have a partner, dog. Baj has a boss ( a wife ) not a partner
Gemmel Posted 1 January, 2010 Posted 1 January, 2010 Baj, If you are doing the whole house, ask for the manager when you get in and ask for additional discount over and above the offers. I was told to do that when I did the same and they didnt even blink and were happy to obliege. I can't remember how much it was, but it was a decent amount and certainly worth doing. That was at the carpet warehouse next to B&Q in Nursling
