benjii Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 Given that we've lost two of the last three, I think it's important to get back on a winning run asap and for that reason plus the seven day break, we should play our strongest team or pretty near to it. Agreed with that, I doubt any of our key players would like being rested after a loss, they all will want to get back out on the pitch and win. Bart James - Thomas - Perry - Harding Waigo - Hammond - Morgan - Lallana Connolly - Lambert Picks itself really.
RedWillie Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 Pards says on the OS that he will play a strong team - I agree - winning breeds a winning mentality. On another note, I remember going to regular games up at Kenilworth Road in the 80's (before the M25 !) when we were both in Div 1. (as is the premiership to the youngers on here...) Remember a really, really foggy 3-3 draw with Shilts in goal. I think they scored in the last few mins or something. I also remember round about 1990 getting a ticket after they banned all away fans following the infamous Millwall match. Saints won 4-3 and there were about 40 of us Saints dotted about the main stand. I think Matty and Rod wallace banged a couple in...but can't be bothered to dig out my history book. The place is a real dive, one of the stands you enter through a house ! Hoping for a Saints win but believe me this will be a tougher test than we think and also Luton will bring a fair few fans. The FA Cup also tends to bring out a few nutters. !
the saint in winchester Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 I think its best that AP picks the team. This selection would lose, absolutely no doubt, and then we would have the disgrace of going out to a non-league team (albeit one that should never be non-league). Saga will not play, he is leaving, Davis is not match fit, and anyway better to keep Bart in goal to keep his confidence up, Davis will be backup if anything happens to him. Trotman won't be allowed to play, if he hasn't already gone. Molyneux is not good enough. Don't care what anyone says we should play the strongest team available, the only one I would leave out of the starting line up would be Connolly, but havehim on the bench. Anyone who thinks we should just throw away the FA Cup game against non-league opposition clearly has no udnerstanding of the meaning of the Cup to not only real supporters but also to the players and management. So there are 7 games in January - we employ professional players who are capable of playing twice a week, and anyway with the transfer window open tomorrow its not like we would be stuck if someone got injured - that would be more of a concern in February. ------------- Obviously, AP picks the team. This is a fans forum and we all get to fantasy pick our teams. So what if we lose? It's not the end of the world. We may have 7 days before the next game, but we should be using our squad, and we don't. If we play out strongest 11 every game, then we should sell off a dozen players in Jan as they'll never make the starting lineup. I know Davis match fit, that's why I said to play him, to get match fit. Molyneaux IS good enough - clearly you don't watch reserve games? Pair him with Holmes and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Your most telling phrase is "don't care what anyone says". That's your attitude. It's a game of opinions and I'm entitled to express my opinion. Picking the same team every game will get injuries, so you;ll get your way! Happy now?
Jonnyboy Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 With Jaidi and Murty injured and Trotman back at Preston it may be the best you will get. More than enough to stop Luton imo. OK Luton, but what about some actual league clubs Our defence, or even team, is looking too near to the one that got relegated last season - Bart, Thomas, Perry, James, Wotton , Lallana I only whinge about this cos I really want to make the playoffs this season... We need new, better players (not Lancashire recalled from his Loan)

Andy_Porter Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 Guys, we have 7 games in January. We have to play the fringe players tomorrow, of all days. If we lose, so be it. FA Cup is not top priority this year. JPT and the league out-rank the FA Cup! Davis Argent Trotman Martin Molyneaux Wotton (DM) Gobern (wide right) Holmes (wide left) McLaggon (AM) Saganowski Paterson If we played a team like that I'd honestly expect a refund. We wouldn't stand a chance.

Andy_Porter Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 Martin, Argent, Molyneux, Holmes and McLaggon would probably find their level in the conference. Apart from Davis and Trottman I don't think any of the others would look all that amazing in the conference. Maybe if you paid Saganowski enough he might score a few. Windmill Arm 2 Posted 1 January, 2010 Share Posted 1 January, 2010 I expect we will win, but frankly I couldn't give a toss, sadly the FA Cup is a bit of an unnecessary destraction from more pressing matters like the plaay off push and the JPT (which is winnable), not very romantic I know and i'm sure i'll get slated, but its not as if we'll be lifting the FA Cup in May is it? Are you telling me that Luton would not snap our hands off to be able to sign those 11 players and play them every week? Think you may be seriously underestimating Luton Town. They may be in the Conference but last season they won the JPT. 30 point deductions make a mockery of the term "non-league". Think Luton will be stronger than several teams we have played this season, and I don't just mean Torquay and Northampton.

You can't just put 11 fringe players out who have barely played a game this season and expect to walk over a team. Luton will come here up for the game big style. Big stadium, they will raise their game and are fighting for potentially one of the big teams in the fourth round. Do not write any team off. SaintRobbie Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Thought I might as well start a thread off. As usual this one on paper should be a sure-fire Saints win, however if there's a team that could cause an upset, I think its Luton as they have some decent players. Craddock is a forward in form and they have a decent QPR striker on loan who is doing the business too. They have nothing to lose with this, so I cannot see them coming here to shut up shop in the first half certainly. As normal with Saints, if we can keep a clean sheet to half-time, they should start to tire earlier and we'll come away with it. If they score early it could prove to be another slog to get back into the game. Prediction : Saints 2 - Luton 1. COYS! 3-1 Business resumed as usual! trousers Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Play the strongest team possible, we want to continue progressing on three fronts, and it seems that AP agrees judging by his comments. I agree with playing a stong team today on the basis that anyone rested would not be playing a first team game for 11 days otherwise. I suspect that's Pardew's stance too - i.e. he's not playing a strong team on principle (per se) just that he doesn't have a lot of choice in order to keep up player's match fitness. If we had an important league game on Tuesday I'd venture that Pardew would be resting several '1st choice' players today.
