Interesting that the old farts seem to think the same. I don't think it is an ageist thing, more down to events and attitudes.

I remember when I went to Poly back in the late 70's, I was genuinely shocked at how hostile they were. I had mates in my year who were skates and they would be fine, but if for example we were out with them, if they mentioned I was a "scummer" to others who didn't know me, then they nearly all reacted with aggression.

I found it odd. It wasn't rivalry, it wasn't fellow football fan banter, it was genuine nastiness.

As they came up the leagues, more Skates came out the closet in and around Salisbury, but maybe because they were more used to being with "other fans" there was just unease in them, never genuine "mateness"

'84 was a real eye opener, staying overnight with a mate who lived in North End, seeing the whole almost feral packs roaming the streets, not one or two but dozens, all the way home on the bus, just seemed odd, the stories of cars at trafiic lights with stickers showing they were BOUGHT in Southampton being smashed up. It was MORE than rivalry.

Then in recent years that hatred has spread, now many of our "younger generation" are giving them back what so many down there seemed to give in the late 70's.

Again, karma, they gave it out for those years, and now it gets shoved back at them.

Do I want them destroyed becauseof tribal rivalries? No.

Do I feel that buying success without doing the work or having the money is cheating? Yes.

Should they be destroyed for cheating? Now, that IS a tough call, but on balance? No

If they get destroyed for cheating, it won't stop others doing it, they'll simply be more careful, so making an example won't change the world.

Let them rot and suffer admin and relegation, they brought it onto themselves in so many ways. Send them the Leeds way.

I want them to pay a price for taking that short-cut and effectively 'cheating' their way to the Premier League.

We overstretched ourselves building SMS and here we are two leagues down, rebuilt, hopeful, wiser, humbled by 4-5 years of unrelenting blood-letting. It wasn't a quick thing. We bled players, points, fans, money, belief... Until there was almost nothing left. I want at least the same for Pompey, possibly more considering the scale of their excess. They should be left two leagues down from where this roller coaster began, in League Two. They can rebuild from there and meet us back in the promised land when they have paid their debt (so to speak).

There are some who will say that Pompey have already paid their dues in the lean years before Mandaric bought them out but those years were the punishment for the mismanagement of previous regimes. Their new stint in football's cellar starts here and now.

Happy New Year Phil.. Sea View was awesome last night!!

I'm very much with you (and Duncan) on this. When I moved away from Southampton mid 87 I ended up living in Chichester.. This lovely little city is deemed to be a skate stronghold and, in indeed, there were a few members of the sad blue few to be found..

A good friend of mine (a Brighton fan) and I frequented various pubs most weekends and we gradually got to know the local fishy friends..

And it was nasty.. The 'hatred' was obvious and there were numerous close encounters.. It wasn't from some of them, it was from all of them.. Pretty much I kept very quiet for my own safety but leading up to the FA Cup game Jan '90 it was brutal.. I never understood where the real nastiness came from. Maybe the bitterness is fuelled by the number times we've played each other simply because there have been so few encounters. Perhaps the time that elapses between each match just serves as a breeding ground for the hate..

For weeks after the game it was worse and I was seriously injured on one occasion and just attacked on a couple of others just because I supported Saints..

The bitterness and dislike I have for anything associated with them has calmed over the last 10 years or so.. If you'd asked this previously, humbled or destroyed, I would have wanted total destruction - only the ****roaches should be allowed to live..

And now? I smile when they lose, just a small wry smile. I smile when I hear that bell. I smile when I see their ground.. But as to whether they survive? Humbled or destroyed? Relegated? Docked points?

Quite simply... I DON'T CARE... I wouldn't want to give them the satisfaction..

However, I will continue to smile, just a little one from time to time, at their discomfort and misfortune..

As always, Up The Saints...

I went for destroyed but it's a bit of a nonsense really because all this "cease to exist" stuff is just complete nonsense, just like it was when we were in admin.

No club of their size will EVER cease to exist, there will always be a football club in Portsmouth wether they have their name changed to AFC Portsmouth or not is meaningless.

Very worst case scenario for the Skates is they go into admin get docked points, maybe go down a league or two. Have their debts wiped out and be bought by someone else - same as every other decent sized team that has ever gone into admin.

That's why I wish them the worst possible - because it is not that bad.

It is odd. A student told me recently that he went clubbing in Portsmouth and met up with some locals. They had a good time and stopped for a kebab. Between bites he mentioned that he came from Totton - one of them pushed his kebab into his face and they all walked off leaving him bewildered.

When I was a kid I played for a Tyro League side and we were drawn against a side from Portsmouth in the Hampshire Cup. I remember our manager saying "this lot will really hate you" and explaining why, but I never understood. I think I was about 12 and though I supported Saints also had a Pompey kit.

During the game we had grown men shouting all sorts of abuse at us, I still didn't understand it, I remember just feeling sorry for the opposition players because they had nasty parents who were putting them under pressure. All we wanted to do was play footie and being quite good, gave them a right stuffing.

My mate teaches in a rough area of portsmouth, he says the kids there are obsessed with hating "scummers", thinks it's bred into them.

I too have been living in Chichester for the last 25 years and can concur. The local skates were and still are a nasty bunch. I used to prefer local nights out in Bognor as there was less agro with them.

They have to keep existing for the misery to continue. A straight drop to BSq South would just give them the impetus to rebuild quickly. Relegation followed by administration followed by relegation followed by more administration and so on, sucking the lifeblood from them would be so much more fun and would take them a generation to recover from, by which time I'll be too old to care (much)

I live over here on the dark side, too, and the Blue Few are pretty scarce, I'd say, around Chichester (so much so that my lad's club had Doddsy over to present the trophies last summer). Many more Manure shirts than Poopey ones on show. It is part of the Skates problem - their catchment is tiny if they can't count Chichester as theirs. There as many Brighton as Skate fans & as soon as you go east there is not a Skate to be seen.

I wouldn't say "scarce" in Chichester, as it is definately the wrong shade of blue. In recent years (since 2003) there has been a massive increase in the number of vile shirts being worn - however, these JCL's will disappear as quickly as they arrived once this season is out.

In the years when I used to go out (in the distant past), there were plenty of 'lads' that professed to be skate, and I used to get shedloads of abuse (at the very least) on any average night out - sometimes the abuse went too far.

I always viewed the A29 between Fontwell and Bognor as the border between the Skates and Brighton where as you say, no skate to the east.
