Pompey or Saints - Is their current financial position worse than ours was?

I wonder how that works, as they always wanted to redevelop the site when they were talking about moving grounds.

Dunno - 'twasn't me that suggested there might be restrictions.

A few years ago I worked on a project in Oxford that involved moving services from an old, listed building to a brand new one.

The listed building was in the centre of Oxford and would have been worth a bomb on the open market. However, it was covenanted and could only be used for health or education purposes. Hence it was bought, for a song, by the university.

Similar restrictions could well apply - e.g. could only be used for sports purposes, community purposes............ These restrictions could have been waived maybe if better facilities were being provided elsewhere (not difficult :D) but maybe they wouldn't be waived if there was no longer a 'community' football club in existence.

I imagine the power lies in the hands of the local council. I think we had similar restrictions on SMS?

there will be a wave of sympathy from the Sky commentators tonight. I doubt the will mention the reckless spending and wages.Just a few pictures of craggy faced old birds and kids crying to get the sympathy up.

And West**** waving his bellend in the crowd.

what makes me laugh..just had a look and pompey (or someone there) have released a statement saying what HMRC have done is illegal..

ffs, this is not some agent or football club they are dealing with here...

Oh, these lads have a certain way of doing things you know, they like to haggle a bit as if the were down at the local souk. They think they can always haggle over everything. In the end someone somewhere will pay up,but not until they've had a few days at their favourite pastime.

As an old italian finance director of mine once told me, "To pay and to die there's always time".

Pompey have been issued with a winding up order by HMCR with a view to placing the club in bankruptcy,to be heard in early February.

They also owe £10mil in payments to other clubs, this is on top of the action being taken by sol Campbell for payments of around £1.5 mil owed to him in bonuses etc.

Is this a more serious position to be in than we were before the takeover?

Here's one for the legal eagles out there...

IF they go into bankruptcy and (will / would have) likely be relegated too, They will cease to be a club and drop out of the league totally.

What MIGHT the Premiership do to redress the balance of 20 clubs next year ?

Maybe take up THREE clubs from the CCC...and / or ? ..etc, etc,

Any thoughts/ideas ?

on a more mercenary note ..are there any contracted players at Pompey who

AP might like to look at ....??

I heard they replace the team with the highest team within 30 miles of Fratton Park. Just what I was told anyway.

interesting, their loss could be our gain, that would really rub salt in the wounds if each league had to promote an extra team and we were one of them.

Perhaps ML could buy the ground and turn it into a forcourt for his cranes.:-)

Bournemouth, West Ham, Southampton, and now Portsmouth have all been in financial difficulties, due (wholly or partly) to the presence of one person over the years.

Is that the photocopier salesman LifeLongCherryBubblesSaintSkate ?? Have they all gone mad and installed far too many top of the range ones that they couldn't afford?

They are really in serious difficulties. People talk about a "firesale" of their "stars" to find funds to cover their debts, but I don't see who they're going to sell for any real money. They might get a few quid for James, Kaboul, Belhadj, perhaps even Boateng, but hardly the tens of millions they need. And other than those four, their best players are only there on loan. I mean, who is going to stump up big cash for the likes of Utaka, Kanu, Hreidarson & the rest? Let's be serious: these are the kind of players who, if they go, will go for small fees or on free transfers. They've already sold the crown jewels, and the money went straight to the banks, but left them still deep in debt. They really don't have assets to sell any more for the kind of money they need; so unless someone somewhere puts in 20 or 30 million (and anyone who does that is not buying a Premiership club any more with the money, let's face it), they very well may go, not just down, but under.

Sad really: I wouldn't wish that on any club or its supporters. Just goes to show, even though the lesson of Leeds United has been out there for years, some still don't learn. Buy temporary success at a price well above your means at your peril!

Read online at the weekend that they are paying Utaka £80K PER WEEK.

UTTER UTTER MADNESS.

Whoever set up that deal, and approved it needs their head examined. Even if they survive this, the fall-out is going to bring some BIG casualties, as questions WILL be asked by the authorities.

'Hopefully'

There are huge differences between our situation and theirs. But ultimately it comes down to the assets.

At 13 million which included the Stadium, Staplewood and the squad, there was enough to make us an attractive proposition. They don’t have those assets, with the exception of half a dozen players who have a reasonable sellable value (Although that will have gone down as clubs look to get bargain deals from clubs in trouble). Loans have been taken out against future TV revenue and the ground is reportedly owned by gaymark, who claims to still be owed 25 million, then throw Lens, Watford, Chelsea, Football agents, Sol Cambell, the Chinese businessman and HMRC into the mix and it just gets messier.

If HMRC are successful with their petition, then the current Directors could well become liable for the debts, so will have to have to make a decision on “Administration” before February.

I personally think they will sell a couple of players and pay off the tax man, so a lot of this is a non starter in short term, but long term they are deep deep in the weeds and whether they go down the admin route or not, they will be relegated and maybe more than once.

which goes a long way to explain exactly why, despite selling Diarra and Johnson for a combined £37m, not to mention Crouch, Defoe etc, they are still in the ****. Having said that, Gaydamak really did **** them though over didn't he.

Only one club were stupid enough to convince the City Council that he deserved the Freedom of the City bestowed upon him though. Wonder if he ever uses the award to visit and see the 'fruits of his labour' down at FP these days?

Much worse, it's starting to look like there is no way out for them, unless they get bought out by a billionaire willing to instantly pump £50m+ into the club.

Like we were ? ;)

Seriously, I reckon they are doomed. They dont even have a shiny asset like SMS from which to re-build the club.

Breaking news on SSN, Pompey deny being asked to be wound up by HM Revenue and Customs...

I wonder if it'll be a similar denial to this classic from a month back -

PFC Statement - ''Al Faraj was not interviewed by the press, his comments are made up - it's all lies. We will consult our lawyers to sue the papers''

2 days later, PFC Statement - ''It seems as if Ali Faraj did make those comments in the papers''

I quote "All the moneys abroad as far as I know, its difficult to get it here"

Ever heard of a pc transfer you mong

I've just seen those clips, bloody idiot.

I don't want Pompey to go under as then who would be our rivals?! Just some suffering and relegation to league 2 would be nice.

We were bloody lucky tbf, but as you say we were a bargain in terms of having everything in place.

Training ground, academy, stadium, infrastructure etc - our debts were also pretty modest compared to portsmouths...

It's so ironic that the shiny asset that made us an attractive purchase was built by the man who failed to keep us out of administration.

Tbh, I think they should put all their players on the transfer list; declare themselves bankrupt; take the 10 point hit; and restart in the Championship. And if they can do that, and still stay as a club in the Football League, then I think they can count themselves very lucky indeed.

In comparison to Saints, it is much, much worse for Pimply. There are no proper assets to continue in professional football, apart from the playing and coaching staff. They have a ground which is worth much more as a supermarket, or housing development, and they can't fill it to its meagre capacity either, despite it being right in the centre of the city with excellent rail and road links. I think it could be a matter of time before they cease completely, whatever they do, save finding some benevolent ex-navy multi-billionnaire, with a love of all things Portsmouth FC. I suspect they'd start up again as AFC Portsmouth, and the sporting rivalry between the Southampton and Portsmouth would be well and truly over.
