OldNick Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 you say that but we complained that the FL did not do a great deal to help....surely the PL should be doing all they can.. not that I want them to of course The PL now have the first PL club to have to face a winding up order. The brand has been damaged by this, add to that the other shenanigans and the PL may now act a bit more.
benjii Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Does anyone still think the Football League were in any way remotely out of order to us? If so, how?

Channon's Sideburns Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Simple. Did we get much sympathy from that lot? No. You reap what you sow.
Scummer Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 of course...the FL should do more imo..but it IS the right thing to do to help pompey in any way possible.. I hope it fails mind I guess the problem is that the league can't be seen to help one club at the expense of others. Say they give Pompey a hand, and as a result they stay up. Whoever goes down in their place is going to be mightily p1ssed off. And would probably start court proceedings.
Sheaf Saint Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 I guess the problem is that the league can't be seen to help one club at the expense of others. Say they give Pompey a hand, and as a result they stay up. Whoever goes down in their place is going to be mightily p1ssed off. And would probably start court proceedings. For all their faults, I do not envy the PL's position here. I would imagine that right now they are looking at the situation very carefully trying to work out a way that they can punish PFC for their financial wrongdoings without it reflecting badly on the brand in general. They need to tread a very fine line IMO. But remember, they didn't give Leeds any assistance when they were in a similar situation, so I can't see them bailing Pompey out either. And like you say, they can't show any favouritism towards any one club. They have to make sure that they apply the same laws to every club (Unless said club happens to be called Manchester Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool of course) so as not to leave themselves open to the kind of legal fiasco that ensued with Sheffield Utd and West Ham. That whole episode was a serious embarassment for the PL and they will have learned a big lesson from that I would imagine.
benjii Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 I don't think this is a big deal for the Premier League at all really. They will shortly be shot of a puny little club that brings nothing but distaste wherever it goes. Far worse has happened in other major leagues than a club overstretching itself. St Landrew Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Makes you wonder how on earth the present and immediate past owner of PFC ever got past the Premier League's fit-and-proper-person rules. Of course, some people might say there is always the possibility that a few bulging envelopes may have changed hands. But I would never suggest such a thing. benjii Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Er, can anyone decipher this paragraph: "Portsmouth Football Club has not been formally served with a winding up petition and is shocked and surprised this action has been taken in respect of VAT, PAYE and National Insurance Contributions which either have been, or are about to be paid, or are disputed." So they haven't but they have?
