The return of Mr Pericard

is Pericard better than Patterson?

Packing the squad full of wage sapping mediocrity is what we had when we got relegated from the prem and then the coke.

I'd rather stick with Patterson than buy mediocrity.

Surely we can do better than this.

As others have said, I would not judge him fully on his previous time with Saints otherwise we would be slating Lallana etc. So, as he's a big experienced CF that could take on the duties of Lambert against lower league opposition, I think he could be a good squad addition. Shame we're not going for someone quicker, but hey it's January and who else might be available on a free, because I don't think there's a never ending pot of money for another striker. My thoughts are that AP will be spending any transfer money on a CB and midfielder.

I know. When the f**k is Liebherr going to pull his finger out and buy Torres?

If we really wanted him, a week wouldn't matter. He's likely to be ours imo.

Well then that would mean we were buying him rather than signing a player at the end of a contract for free. Why pay Carlisle money when a week later it is free? Pericard can't just walk out, I'm sure they'd like him to play on Saturday when he is still under contract.

Yeah heard that too. Hopefully they have their wires crossed.

I don't know, I've got an open mind on it - he's been decent for Carlisle at this level and will be a useful squad player.

Sky sports reported earlier that they ''understood'' he'd rejected the contract offer by carlisle and was set to join another club - so putting that and south today's report together, he's probably ours.

Yes - ok squad player but I thought we were after players that would see us into and through the CCC. Still as you say I'll keep an open mind - if he joins us.

I'd still expect us to go for a pacy striker though, i see Pericard as a kind of ''replacement'' for lambo, if he's injured - as we have no one else with any sort of ''presence'' to play up top.

Pericard will only be a Rickie Lambert "targetman" backup if he does sign. I think it is a sensible signing. At present we don't have any cover for Lambert what does and would struggle if he got injured and would have to change the style of play by using very different strikers like Papa Waigo and David Connolly.

Alan Pardew

"We are looking to improve our side, but It’s a depressed market at the moment."

Has he decided to give up on "improving the side" and settled on improving the subs bench?

What is wrong with taking up any sort of opportunity when it presents it's self?

We will sign big this window, for sure, but our main issue is squad depth and there are no problems in adding a bit of ''cover''.

Why can't he do both? Any good manager would. If Lambert got injured before Saturday Saints would have to change the entire style of play as have no similar player to Lambert. I'm confident if Pericard signs he will be followed with others in different positions that will go straight into the team i.e. a centre back.

Id prefer AP to sign the likes of Simeon Jackson to challenge Lambert for his place, not just contently 'back him up in case of injury'

I want a team full of quality, not a decent 1st team with 'ok' backup!

Following the signing of Antonio (a large cheer of delight went up in Reading) I can't say that I'm impressed. Pericard had a good first season for Pompey in CCC but has done nothing anywhere he's been since. Went to Carlisle because nobody else wanted him. Has played six games for them. We really need better players than this, since the two of them aren't improving the quality of the squad. My heart sinks every time I see MA start a game, and now this...

Jackson and Lambert are completely different types of striker.

Pericard would be backup for Lambert.

Connolly is the 2nd striker when playing 442. Waigo and Lallana are other options. Maybe buying someone like Simeon Jackson or Lee Barnard would be good to compete for this role. That "could" still happen this window, no-one knows.

As I said if Lambert gets injured now, Saints will have to change the stye of play. If Pericard is signed they won't.

Which is rubbish and likely to be untrue because his short term contract at Carlisle doesn't run out until Jan 12th or 13th.

he has a week left on his contract. Assume he has said he wants to come he and we want him.

They can either say no, he has to wait a week unless you pay a fee, or they let him go.

Sure they would let him leave.

Sorry I don't get excited about signing average backup players, just incase our best player gets injured. What message does this give the team?

You're doing 'alright - not great, just ok' BUT carry on regardless.

What our team needed this Jan was a kick up the backside and competition for places will deliver that hard and fast. This team has a potential to be an 8.5/10 in L1 but its playing at maybe 4.5/10. Signing average 'backup' aint gunna change that.

One bad pass or missed shot and he will become the boo boy just like Fuller

if we do sign him it's probably Pardews first big mistake

it will be a bad move both for the player and the club

I was hoping for Pitman or maybe someone like Healy on loan

How do you know that Pericard is the only striker to be signed?

Would you be happy if Saints signed Pericard as backup for Lamber AND Lee Barnard to challenge with David Connolly for the 2nd striker role by the end of January?

So 4 strikers of Lambert and Pericard as target men. Connolly and Barnard for the second striker role. Would be awesome for both this league and good if promoted.

Patience is a virtue Glasgow Saint, wait to see the full picture of Pardew's Jan plans. ;)

I'm happy to wait, but don't pretend that you know ****, because you don't. We'll see who AP buys, but don't pretend that you know what he has in mind.

I don't think so. I reckon Pericard is cover for Lambert and Connelly plus Papa and Patterson are also in the equation. Barnard might be a red herring - however hope you're right.

Second mistake. He has already signed Antonio until the end of the season.

I tend to agree. If you recall he replaced Rasiak as he left for Bolton. Pericard was so poor he made Rasiak seem world class!!! Hopefully he's a lot better now but unconvinced....... plus the Pompey link....

TBH, I think he could turn out to be a useful addition. When we had him first time, he was coming back from a long time out and we used him as a bits and pieces player, which wouldn't have allowed him to get proper match fitness or any semblance of consistency.

When he played regularly at the Skates, alongside Todorov, when they were promoted, he did well and scored goals. I hope he does the same for us as the much maligned Fuller did for Stoke.
