S-Clarke Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Hope he does well...will watch with interest.
trousers Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 (edited) A devil's advocate might want him to have a bad game so that Wolves decide to loan him out to a lower league club in January. Not a view I would share of course... Edited 28 December, 2009 by trousers
Massimo Osti Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Gone now and old news IMO. Nothing to do with The Saints Forum???
Glasgow_Saint Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Just seen highlights of Fulham v Chelsea - another ex Saint 'Baird' was at fault for the Chelsea winner. He player RB today, but noticed they have been playing him in midfield lately.
Micky Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Did ok, nothing spectacular, helped Wolves to a 3 nil loss at home.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond.
Danny Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond. Seeing as Surman is a predominantly cultured attacking midfielder and Hammond is a defence-minded box-to-box all action midfielder, it is hardly a direct comparison. Schneiderlin would be a much more similar type of player to Surman than Hammond.
Crab Lungs Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Just seen highlights of Fulham v Chelsea - another ex Saint 'Baird' was at fault for the Chelsea winner. He player RB today, but noticed they have been playing him in midfield lately. He was an absolutely terrible RB when he was with us. It was only when he reverted to CB that he was any good. Hopefully some on here will remember his stand-offish/lack of pace/awareness problems when he played that position for us. At CB though, he was half decent - his reading of the game better suited a position like centre half and counter-acted against the pace. As for Surman... looke well off the pace. That said, he hasn't been playing of late so to be expected to be 'sharp' immediately was probably quite a big ask - yet watching him, I couldn't help but feel he was completely out of his depth in the PL.
Pat from Poole Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond. Surely you jest, Duncan? Hammond is our most important player.
Andy_Porter Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Surman is probably the only player we lost in the summer I'd welcome back to the club. A midfield five of Surman - Hammond - Lallana - Schneiderlin - Waigo would be immense. Happy to see the back of McGoldrick, BWP, John, Dyer etc
wild-saint Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond. my eyes are dim, i can not see and i did not bting my glasses with me.
SET Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Surman is way out of his depth, he's a league 1 standard player at most.
Arizona Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 Surman is probably the only player we lost in the summer I'd welcome back to the club. A midfield five of Surman - Hammond - Lallana - Schneiderlin - Waigo would be immense. Happy to see the back of McGoldrick, BWP, John, Dyer etc I'd have kept DMG and Surman given choice. Also Skacel if he'd wanted to be here. A forward six of: Lambert - DMG Skacel - Hammond - Surman - Lallana With Waigo and/or Connolly coming off the bench, circumnstances depending.
SET Posted 28 December, 2009 Posted 28 December, 2009 So let me get this straight, you now feel we would have been better off keeping players who were responsible for the clubs relegation to league one and members of the worst Saints team of the last 50 years. Short memories round here

John Boy Saint Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I was disappointed that he left us as he gave the team some connection to Southampton, as a player he was frustrating, one week fantastic the next missing, a bit like Anders Svennson. Hammond V Surman?............ Hammond for me, the bloke is a hard tackling presence in our midfield who puts in a damn good shift every week, him and Spiderman make, for me, a good combination Finesse and Steel.

austsaint Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Surman looked completely out of his depth today.
Thedelldays Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Surman looked completely out of his depth today. as did most of the wolves team
positivepete Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I watched his performance closely yesterday, he found space well, exploiting the space behind Steven Ireland. He continually supported the frontmen, only gave the ball away a couple of times, had a couple of very good set pieces, a couple of incisive through balls into the box for the strikers and was involved twice in the best Wolves move of the match with two lovely first touches. When the winger came on who had been keeping him out, the winger was put on the right, and Surman left on. He lacks the pace required to go further but makes up with his intelligent movement and passing. I thought since it was only his third match he did pretty well.
benjii Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 He has a Premiership quality football brain and ability but physically may struggle to forge a career in that league, having neither much pace nor being particularly strong. I think he should look to move to an Italian team (seriously!) as I think he could do well in Serie A.
david in sweden Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Surman is homesick. Fact. and let's not forget that he was sold by the club to pay the salaries, it's wasn't his choice to move. Wolves may be struggling but HCDAJFU.
ottery st mary Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I would have him in my team..anyday.. Great player..Not match fit but could do a job for us..especially next season in the CCC....We will still make it.....Shame Surman had to leave to pay the wages....In the wrong team in Wolves. Pards will get the right players in the next few weeks..that is for sure....hopefully. COYRs
Thedelldays Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I would like to think he will play for us again in the next 5 years
OldNick Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 It was not AS fault he was overrated by fans. He seems a decent lad but his lack of pace will always make him a lower league player. I had hoped he would develop into a top player but that didn't happen
ottery st mary Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 nick...AS.. is faster than you or me...Just....... Not too bad..come to think of it he is twice as fast as Holmes and James...You are right..If only he had a couple more yards of pace..Then again he would have been snapped up by the real big boyzz....For us though he would be good....But as always I will let Pards and his team pick up more gems to get us up this league.... Happy New Year ... COYRs
S-Clarke Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 His lack of pace will always hinder him and stop him from becoming a top top player, but he showed enough last night that he can hold his own. It was interesting to see that Mick played him in an advanced midfield role, coming in from the left to join up with the strikers - we really wasted him at LB, and the fact that Mick has never played him there shows what clowns were running this club. he'll prob be back here one day, he was a good lad - a proper supporter and he played with his heart (sometimes last season that was his problem). It was nice to have a player like that in the team though.
monkadill Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I saw the game and hoped he'd do well, unfortunatly i thought he was out of his depth. At best he's a Championship player.
SuperSAINT Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Thought he did well. Involved in Wolves' best move of the night with a couple of lovely 1st time passes. Love to see him back here some day.
OldNick Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 nick...AS.. is faster than you Happy New Year ... COYRsare you trying to offend me. Lol Happy new year to all. I agree about leaving AP to it
Super_Saint Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Can Surman still play with South Africa even though he has played for the English U21's? or is it only playing with the senior team that would stop him?
callysaint76 Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Due to his lack of pace he should be played on the right cutting inside like Pires for Arsenal. His best form for us came in our play off season with him at right mid with Jesus bombing on behind him, definately has the football brain for the highest level.

Docker Walker6 Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond. Surman, far to light weight, no comparrison to Hammond!
Chez Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 (edited) If it wasn't for Pinnacle he could still be with us. Rather have him than Hammond. I'm with you. Surman's lack of pace will make it tough for him in the Premiership if played out wide, but he has real quality on the ball and eventually might make a centre midfielder. Hammond's own lack of pace means he will struggle at CCC level in my opinion. He has a great football brain, but he just doesn't get to enough secomd ball. Both very decent footballers though. It was nice to have a player like that in the team though. I remember seeing him for the reserves a few years ago in that advanced midfield role. To me he has always seemed most suited to that role as while he appears somewhat lightweight and lacks pace, his attacking play is effective. From what I saw a good amount of our goals last season came when Surman got involved. It was Pearson who first played him at LB (out of necessity, I guess). He did a decent job as cover but playing him there instead of Skacel for the first half of last season was a poor use of both players. I also thought it was telling that while people were slating him for not being interested, he was still one of our most important players last season. A lot of responsibility at a pretty early point in his career.
Marino Posted 30 December, 2009 Posted 30 December, 2009 This constant reference to 'lack of pace' makes me laugh. He's not a left back and only filled-in there when there was no other option. He's a midfielder where 'pace' is not such a requirement - think of some of the top midfielders in that position today Scholes, Lampard, Barry, Beckham to name but a few - 'pace' anybody ? Surman's a talented young player, hence the U21 England caps and a move to the Premiership, and I would love to see him back at Saints one day.
